- This day is possibly the most important day of my life.
- I can't believe eavesdropping on this conversation will lead me to a major decision.
- A decision that will turn my life upside down.
- I wonder what might happen if I wasn't overhearing the King's conversation with the British ambassador.
- Perhaps I would make a different decision.
- Would my life turn out differently?
- I will never know.
- All I can do is continue down the path I already chose.
- I conceal myself behind the hedge, peeking out discreetly. I can barely see the King's silhouette from this distance.
- Louis XVI: Do you have anything else to say?
- British Ambassador: Your Majesty, the Marquis de Lafayette is still preparing to travel to the colonies.
- British Ambassador: As agreed, Your Majesty shall put a halt to his expedition. We can't allow Lafayette to join the war.
- Alfred: (What agreement? What did he say to the King?)
- Louis XVI: I believe I've already responded to your King's request.
- British Ambassador: Your Majesty will then, perhaps, recall that Great Britain has formally requested a sanction on Lafayette.
- Louis XVI: If Great Britain had followed up on this issue, I suppose you should be aware that...
- Louis XVI: I've already ordered Lafayette's incarceration. He's currently in prison.
- Alfred: (So Great Britain is involved in the Marquis' arrest...)
- British Ambassador: But he...
- Louis XVI: I've already graciously granted the sanction on Lafayette. If Great Britain will continue to abuse my goodwill...
- Louis XVI: As the King of France, I cannot tolerate such impertinence.
- British Ambassador: Your Majesty! My scouts report Lafayette is heading towards the port!
- Alfred: (The port? Is he leaving France?)
- Louis XVI: What did you say?
- British Ambassador: Your Majesty, I'm afraid our agreement has been breached.
- Louis XVI: We must send someone after Lafayette at once.
- British Ambassador: I must say I'm quite appalled by Your Majesty's approach to our agreement.
- Louis XVI: Ambassador, if Great Britain truly wants to keep Lafayette from their colonies, perhaps we should cease our quarrel and go after him immediately?
- British Ambassador: I will report this incident to my King!
- Red with anger, the British ambassador grumbles at His Majesty. I quickly leave the garden.
- I bolt across the hallway as fast as my legs can carry me, but almost collide with George.
- George: Watch where you're going! What if you run into a noble?
- Alfred: I'm sorry, George, but I must go!
- George: What's the hurry, Alfred? Where are you going?
- Alfred: The port. Let me through, George, I don't have time to explain.
- I shove George aside and hurry away. There's no time to lose. Lafayette's ship could leave at any time.
- George: What port? Are you out of your mind?
- George's protests fade as I rush towards the palace gates.
- I'm almost to the port... I can hear the ocean waves slapping against the ships.
- Alfred: Please let him be there... No, he must be there!
- I catch sight of a familiar figure as I hurriedly cross the bustling port.
- A glittering new ship sits proudly at the dock, with sailors and soldiers waiting in line to board.
- The Marquis de Lafayette stands atop the forecastle, staring into the distance.
- Alfred: I made it! Marquis, please wait for me!
- Lafayette turns when he hears me.
- Lafayette: Is that you, Alfred? Why are you here?
- Alfred: You must listen, Sir. I overheard His Majesty's audience with a British ambassador at the palace garden earlier...
- Alfred: They were talking about you! I think... no, I must tell you what I heard.
- I recount every detail to the Marquis.
- Alfred: His Majesty's guards and the ambassador's men are coming for you.
- Alfred: You must leave immediately, Marquis!
- Lafayette is caught by surprise, but he doesn't look worried.
- Lafayette: Did you come all this way just to tell me this?
- Lafayette: Tell me, why did you do this?
For myself
- Alfred: Because I wish to join your expedition, Marquis. I want to follow you to the New World!
- Lafayette: You want to do this for money?
- Alfred: Sure, that's one of the reasons, but there are others, all of which are for my own benefit.
- Lafayette: For your own benefit?
- Alfred: Marquis, your goals happen to align with mine. This arrangement will benefit us both.
- Lafayette: I certainly didn't expect that answer.
For a common cause
- Alfred: Before I met you, I had no purpose in life. But meeting you gave me one.
- Lafayette: Because of what I said in the prison?
- Alfred: Marquis, I couldn't completely understand what you were saying, perhaps because I haven't had much schooling...
- Alfred: But I never stopped thinking about it.
- Lafayette: ...I didn't expect you to be so moved by it.
- Alfred: Of course I'm concerned! I want to... I...
- Alfred:
- ???: It might be a small matter, but I hope you realize your mistake.
- Alfred: Yes. I'm sorry!
- Alfred: I want to follow you, Marquis, and see the New World!
- Lafayette gazes deeply into my eyes, his hair fluttering gracefully in the sea breeze.
- Lafayette: Welcome to our expedition, Alfred. You're a true warrior.
- Lafayette: From this day forward, you are no longer a servant of Versailles.
- I struggle to open my eyes... I can vaguely see Lafayette. He appears to be speaking to someone.
- My body... it aches as if I was run over by a cart.
- The searing pain dazes me as I vaguely recall what happened.
- I was hit by a stray bullet, and the excruciating pain knocked me unconscious.
- Alfred: (So, that was a dream...?)
- Alfred: Major General... Lafayette...
- Lafayette: Alfred? You mustn't speak now, you're bleeding too heavily. Just hang on, I'll get you--
- Alfred: Tell me please... Sir... *cough*
- Lafayette inches closer to me. I've never seen this much emotion in his eyes before.
- Lafayette: What is it? Speak slowly, you mustn't overexert.
- Alfred: Did we... urgh...
- I barely manage to utter those few words before succumbing to a violent coughing fit. My lungs feel as if they are crushed.
- Lafayette: Alfred...
- Alfred: Did we... win the battle?
- Lafayette: ...We did.
- Why is Lafayette choking as he speaks...? It should have been pleasant news...
- Alfred: (You shouldn't be upset, we won after all...)
- I try my best to smile, yet I can barely move my lips...
- Alfred: (Goodbye...)
