  • I wake up the next day and find myself in a small alleyway outside the prison.
  • My back... my hips... my whole body hurts.
  • Wasn't I imprisoned?
  • And the Marquis de Lafayette was in the cell next to me.
  • I had a long talk with him before I fell asleep, didn't I?
  • So why did I wake up outside?
  • The Marquis de Lafayette... He must have asked them to let me go...
  • He still has a way with words.
  • But couldn't they have let me have a good night's rest before putting me out?

  • Alfred: Damn! You could have let me spend the night...
  • I clutch my aching back as I stand up, gazing at the prison gates.
  • Alfred: (Did they throw me out while I was asleep?)
  • Alfred: (The Marquis de Lafayette said he would ask the King for mercy and to let me go free.)
  • Alfred: (He actually kept his word... I wonder how he's doing in there.)
  • I can't help but worry, and walk towards the prison. I need to thank him in person.
  • Prison Guard: Halt! Who's there!
  • Alfred: I, uh, I just want to visit a friend.
  • Prison Guard: A friend?
  • Alfred: Well, I was captured with the Marquis de Lafayette yesterday...
  • Alfred: I was let out first, but I'm worried. I'd like to visit him.
  • Prison Guard: Hah! You're telling me you know a noble?
  • Alfred: Come on, just let me in. He can back me up.
  • Prison Guard: Who do you think you are? You can't just waltz in and out of the prison!
  • Alfred: I just want to visit the Marquis de Lafayette.
  • Prison Guard: Put a cork in it. If you don't leave, I'll lock you up again.
  • Alfred: (Dammit! He's not going to let me see Lafayette.)

  • All I can do is return to the Palace of Versailles.
  • George: Alfred! Pay attention!
  • Alfred: Ah! Sorry, I was distracted...
  • George: You've been like this the whole day. What are you thinking about?
  • Alfred: Uh. Nothing much...
  • I've been mulling the words the Marquis de Lafayette said to me inside the prison.

  • Lafayette: It is ideals, not revenge, that spurs me on this path.
  • Alfred: ...Ideals?
  • Lafayette: Yes, ideals. The colonists in the New World want to create a society where everyone is equal.
  • Alfred: Everyone treated equally? Is that possible?
  • Lafayette: The colonists are being subjected to harsh suppression by the British.
  • Lafayette: They tighten their grip and look to quash any last hope the people may have.
  • Alfred: Why should that concern us?
  • Alfred: These things are happening far away and don't impact us.
  • Lafayette: How could you learn about their tragedy and continue living your life as if nothing is wrong?
  • Alfred: What I'm trying to say is... I mean...
  • I don't know how to reply. Even though I have my own problems to contend with, I feel shame for not caring about others.
  • Lafayette: The colonists are fighting for justice and freedom, and I will do everything in my power to aid them.
  • Lafayette: This isn't about my father... I want to live up to my ideals.

  • The scene has been swirling in my head. I can't get Lafayette's resolute gaze out of my mind...
  • Alfred: (A fire has been lit in the depths of my heart.)
  • Alfred: (How do I even describe this feeling?)
  • I've resumed my normal life, but...
  • I'm starting to feel frustrated.
  • George: Alfred, we need to talk. You've been bungling your duties of late.
  • Alfred: I already told you, I didn't do it on purpose.
  • George: You've been out of sorts lately. Has something happened?
  • Alfred: It's just... I've grown bored with this life.
  • George: You've never said that before.
  • George: What kind of life do you want?

The Life of a Noble

  • Alfred: The carefree life of a noble.
  • George: Stop daydreaming. Nobles are born into that sort of life. We're just commoners. We can't just be one of them.
  • Alfred: You're so pessimistic. What if we had their money?
  • Alfred: We could have the steak and wine they dine on!
  • George: You've worked here a long time. Don't you know the alarming amount they spend?
  • George: We'll never get there with the small pittance they pay us.
  • Alfred: Which is why we need to do something. We gotta get a higher salary.
  • George: If you work hard for ten more years, you'll be promoted and get higher pay.
  • Alfred: Ten years? I can't wait that long.
  • George: What are you trying to say, Alfred?

Pursuing My Ideals

  • Alfred: If we don't work towards our ideals...
  • Alfred: Then isn't life just meaningless?
  • George: Ideals? Hahaha, did you really just say that?
  • Alfred: What's so funny?
  • George: Where did you even learn that word from?
  • Alfred: ...That's none of your business.
  • George: Were you duped by someone? Or did you hit your head somewhere?
  • Alfred: I knew you wouldn't understand.
  • George: What are you trying to say, Alfred?

  • Alfred: My life feels stale. I've grown weary of it.
  • After saying that, I finally realize what I really want.
  • Alfred: (I... want to follow the Marquis de Lafayette. And not just for the money.)
  • Alfred: (I want to understand what he said.)
  • Alfred: (I want to know what the New World has in store.)
  • Alfred: (I want to see how he'll fulfill his dream. Maybe then, I can...)
  • Alfred: George! Thank you for helping me find my answer.
  • George: ... What? Is your head on right?
  • Geoge had helped me come to an important decision, and I no longer felt any confusion.

  • I chanced upon a conversation in the gardens that same day... and it sounded like the King.
  • Louis XVI: Lafayette is a citizen of France. Your country has no right to him.
  • British Ambassador: But your Majesty, he's...
  • Alfred: (The Marquis de Lafayette? What are they talking about?)
  • That name catches my attention, and I duck behind a hedge to eavesdrop on their conversation...
