First Letter

Miss Joyce

Our engagement seems a little rash, having decided on our lifelong partners after a mere exchange of letters.

You may not believe this, but among the many portraits of noble young ladies, I will in love with you at first sight. I rarely make wrong decisions, and this time, too, I am sure I made the right choice. When I asked about you and your parents, though, I was worried my worst fear would come true.

Fortunately, all of you agreed. My mind is finally at ease. I look forward to the day when I can finally meet you.

Duke Cyrus

Second Letter

Miss Joyce

After sending the letter of proposal, I wanted to fetch you over from Sierce, but my plans were disrupted by some official matters. You are my fiancée, and I don't wish for you to hold any grudges. I believe in telling you the truth, as being truthful is a form of respect.

Not long ago, the mines in the Northern Mountains collapsed. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but it's my duty to investigate the matter personally to prevent a tragedy from happening in the future. This is why I had to delay bringing you to Leto, but I will make arrangements once this matter is settled. I never expected you would come to Leto on your own.

Every time I think of this, I feel a pang of guilt. The journey must have been tough on you. Alas, what is past is past. I will make it up to you in future and fulfill my responsibilities as your fiancé.

Cyrus Langston

Third Letter

Dear Dahlia

Since you left, the residence feels unusually empty.

I had never felt this way before you came. I grew up under the care of Mr. Walter as my mother passed on early and my father was often stationed at the borders. After my father died, I became the Duke. In the past twenty-odd years, I've lived alone in this residence, accompanied only by some servants. I'd gotten used to the solitude, or so I thought.

I chose you to become the future Duchess, but when I made that decision, I never thought your arrival would make an impact on my life. I was conceited. That coincidental meeting was like a cruel joke by Fate, and I could no longer treat you like a pawn.

I'm standing at the edge of a cliff, and one wrong step will mean my doom. Even so, I want to take a gamble and grasp onto the people and things I hold dear. All I need to know now is how you feel.

Dahlia, I'm letting you choose. If you're willing, I'll go to you, otherwise... I'll let you go.

Seeking your forgiveness

Letter From the Duke

The bouquet Miss Joyce sent earlier has been blooming in the study for three days. The roses have a very short blooming period, and I was originally lamenting the fleeting nature of beauty, but more bouquets have arrived one after another, which is truly a delightful surprise.

I've instructed Walter to trim and care for the bouquets, placing them throughout the mansion. This way, even when you're not by my side, I can imagine you everywhere - not just seeing you, but also sensing a fragrance that seems to emanate from your very being. However, the privacy of the mansion definitely needs to be strengthened. Someone has recently spread information about the Duke's residence and my recently brightened mood among the townspeople, causing neighbors to fabricate romantic stories about you and me. I want to state clearly that I did not intentionally leak this information, so please do not blame me.

In any case, I have arranged your "visit" to the residence. Upon receiving this letter, someone will be there to assist you. (If you wish to prevent these rumors from spreading further, please burn this letter after reading.

Duke Cyrus' Story[]

The following segments detail Duke Cyrus' story throughout Kingdom of Beasts. This section is nothing but spoilers. Read at your own risk.

Before the Story

Cyrus Langston was born into the Langston dukedom twenty-six years ago, with Cyrus' true identity being that of a female. Very few knew her by her middle name, Olive, named after her mother who had passed on shortly after her birth. Investigations revealed that her mother had actually given birth to twins, but it is implied that the male twin had died shortly after birth. Hence, in order to conceal the truth of her identity, what was reported instead was that the baby girl was the one who had passed at birth. With her mother absent since birth and her father often stationed at the kingdom's borders, Cyrus' life was mostly shrouded in restraints and solitude.

Since women were not allowed to take up positions of power, much less that of the dukedom, Cyrus had to take up the identity of the Langstons' sole male heir. In order to become the perfect duke, Cyrus had to suppress her desires and preferences, and had to hold herself back from expressing any interest in feminine clothing and cosmetics. As an army general, Cyrus also had to treat her wounds and injuries herself so her identity would not be exposed. Eventually, however, she managed to find an apothecary owner whom she could trust.

Due to her upbringing, she is knowledgeable in many fields, which has fostered a good business sense, as well as the resourcefulness needed to overcome difficulties and plan ahead of various situations. She is also said to be well-spoken and articulate, being able to hold meaningful conversations and foster relationships with others, as well as empathise with others easily due to her vast knowledge. As the Duke, Cyrus is highly respected by the people, having dedicated her life as the Duke to better the kingdom and the livelihoods of the people, but can also be shrewd and calculating in order to achieve her goals.

Eight years ago, during the conflict between the Tara Kingdom and the neighboring Paquete Kingdom, Cyrus formally inherited the dukedom from her father, who had succumbed to his injuries from the war. Thus she obtained the title of Duke of Cyrus, and was also able to secure victory for the Tara Kingdom shortly. The two kingdoms decided to sign a truce, and the hard-earned peace allowed the Tara Kingdom to eventually recover and further develop. Currently, Cyrus is one of the seven dukes of the Tara Kingdom, and has territorial control over the Northern Mountains, located a distance away from the Kingdom, where the largest mine in Tara is located. She also plays a large role in the planning of the city, being especially influential in the hotel, inn, and carriage industries.

However, she eventually attracted the suspicions of one of her political enemies, Prince Victor, partly due to her having remained unmarried for a prolonged period of time as a Duke. A month prior to the story, Cyrus had managed to arrange a marriage with a family of her choice and had gone to seek the King's approval, when Prince Victor deliberately convinced the King to dispatch Cyrus to the Paquete Kingdom on a near-impossible negotiation, intending on sabotaging her political position. While Cyrus managed to delay her departure for about a month to prepare for the mission, she was deterred by Prince Victor's assassination attempt on her, thus forcing her to flee for her life. Her whereabouts as the Duke would later be unknown to the public for the following month, as she would go into hiding under a different identity.

Chapter 1

Duke Cyrus was first mentioned in name in 1-1 Blizzard, where the MC (as Dahlia) would receive a formal notice of her newly arranged engagement to the Duke. In actuality, Cyrus had already caught the attention of Prince Victor, who was growing suspicious of her real identity, and was also intent on overthrowing the balance in power. As Dahlia's family was severely impoverished from debt, being one step away from downfall in the aristocracy scene, Cyrus had deliberately selected her as her fiancée as a result, so that even if Dahlia ends up discovering her true identity as a woman, she would be powerless against her.

About a month prior to the story, when Cyrus had sought the King's approval for the engagement, Prince Victor had convinced the King to send Cyrus on a mission to negotiate with the Paquete King to request for a tariff reduction and access rights to the sea routes. This mission was considered near impossible, as the Paquete Kingdom is much more abundant in resources and power. whereas being much more inferior both in resources and military power, the Tara Kingdom did not have anything as valuable to use as leverage in comparison. In the process of testing a potential explosive found at the mines, the Northern Mines collapsed in the process. Thus, to buy some time, Cyrus traveled to the Northern Mountains under the guise of personally investigating the situation on her own territory, and took this opportunity to delay her departure for another month as she worked on further developing a potential bargaining chip for the negotiations. However, Prince Victor, intent on upsetting the balance in political power and uncovering her true identity, sent assassins after her life, forcing her to flee to Sierce and assume a different identity in hiding throughout the chapter. It is also presumed that Dahlia would receive formal news of the engagement only one month after its arrangement, as Cyrus had planned to personally pick Dahlia up from Sierce after successfully returning to Leto from the Northern Mountains.

For most of Chapter 1, what is publicly known about the Duke is that he had met with an accident the month before in the Northern Mountains while investigating the collapse at the mines, and no one knows if he is still alive. However, despite his missing status, no one was actually sent to rescue him, and the King was only told that he had fallen ill. His official return to Leto would only be publicly announced at the end of the chapter, one month after the start of Dahlia's journey.

Chapter 2

Cyrus makes her first formal appearance as the Duke in 2-1 Probing, where Dahlia visits the Langston residence to personally meet her fiancé for the first time. Eventually, her true identity is discovered by Dahlia, who had pieced together the information obtained from investigations and observations thus far. Towards the inevitable confrontation with Dahlia, it becomes evident that Cyrus does, in fact, actually cherish the relationship that they had fostered in the past month, and that Cyrus has grown to see her as more than just a pawn for her own ambitions.

Guilt-ridden about the lies and deceit that their relationship has been built upon, she comes clean to Dahlia about her actions in order to seek her forgiveness. However, angry from being deceived, Dahlia threatens to kill Cyrus with a concealed dagger - but because she still cares for Cyrus, she cannot bring herself to actually hurt her. Cyrus does not resist her hold at all, instead placing her life completely in Dahlia's hands, and pleads to the other to listen to her side of the story at the very least, admitting to the truth behind her actions in Sierce. Yet, as their relationship was built upon lies and falsehoods, Dahlia coldly accuses Cyrus of still lying and trying to manipulate her even now by trying to make her sympathetic. Cyrus then asks her what if she wishes to make this falsehood become reality, which prompts Dahlia to finally let go out of shock. She takes advantage of this confusion and disarms Dahlia with ease, advising her to not hesitate and be as soft-hearted as she was in the face of danger.

As the tension dissipates, Dahlia reminisces about their traveling days in Sierce, and they eventually talk about the discrimination of half-beasts in their society. Cyrus laments about the need for bloodshed for the sake of peace, and her inability to achieve her dreams for the kingdom despite being in power. She expresses her determination to fulfil three wishes; for the Tara Kingdom to no longer be under the control of the Paquete Kingdom, for everyone to live in harmony regardless of race and gender, and finally, to be able to live as she truly is, so that her achievements can be recognised as a woman. Now aware of the responsibilities and burdens Cyrus has to bear as the Duke, Dahlia expresses her support, and with all remaining doubts cleared, they return on good terms once more. They discuss about the tavern attack back at Sierce, and with the arrowhead found from the previous attack at Port Luke, they eventually manage to deduce Prince Victor as a potential culprit. To quell his suspicions, Cyrus requests Dahlia to proceed with the wedding, albeit only in name. Despite her lingering hesitation, she eventually relents, to which Cyrus express her heartfelt gratitude.

Soon after, they receive news that Prince Victor would be personally visiting the Duke's residence to attend the wedding. Worried about any potential attacks, Dahlia goes to visit Cyrus, asking if she has any other proof that points towards Prince Victor's culpability. She confirms this with newly found evidence, but she still lacks substance to convince the King. To allay any further suspicions of their wedding, Cyrus suggests Dahlia move in to the Duke's residence for the time being. Unfortunately, Prince Victor arrives earlier than expected, leaving them with not much time to prepare for his arrival. Still, Dahlia and Cyrus manage to put up the impression of an engaged couple deeply in love, which allows the conversation between the three to go relatively smoothly, until Prince Victor brings up the topic of the King's assignment. Before he leaves, he warns Cyrus to not betray the King's trust in him, and orders them to hold the wedding as soon as possible, for he would be escorting them back to the capital afterwards. Later, Cyrus explains the reasons behind Prince Victor's warning behind her supposed "deserting" and her assignment to negotiate with the Paquete Kingdom, recounting the events that led up to their very first meeting in Sierce. As Cyrus reaffirms her vow to never keep the truth from Dahlia again, Dahlia expresses her empathy and understanding of the situation, to which Cyrus comments how it's been a long time since Dahlia was concerned about her.

While preparing for the wedding, Cyrus opens up to Dahlia about her life growing up as the Duke, having led a mostly lonely childhood prior to the inheritance. On the wedding day, Cyrus and Dahlia notice Aaron's presence in the premises. Cyrus notes that Aaron's hostility towards her indicates that he is still unaware of her identity, which means Dahlia has not disclosed her secret to anyone else. As a sign of gratitude, and in light of Aaron's loyalty towards Dahlia, Cyrus gives her one last chance to turn back, fully prepared to shoulder the consequences regardless of her choice. However, Dahlia chooses to go through with the wedding regardless. After the wedding, Cyrus comments on how two women being able to marry and get congratulated is like a dream, and vows that if their ruse was ever uncovered, she would ensure Dahlia's safety before she can be fully implicated in the fall of the Cyrus family. She confesses to Dahlia that even though the wedding might just be a sham to her, she has never taken anything even more seriously.

In 2-10 Mission, Prince Victor takes them back to the capital soon after as promised. At night, Cyrus attempts to calm Dahlia down, guaranteeing her that the King is genuinely a good king at heart, only being wary of her due to her family's strong military background. In light of the king's nature, she assures that Prince Victor will not act rashly unless he has convincing evidence on hand. Cyrus lets Dahlia in on her plan to ask for the king's protection should she lose her life in her mission, but she is interjected by Dahlia, who suggests that there may be proof of Prince Victor's scheming that they can use to turn the tides in their favour instead. Both of them ponder on how they could succeed in the negotiations, with Cyrus noting the Paquete Kingdom having the upper hand in every aspect. Being noticeably troubled, she is then comforted by Dahlia, who encourages her to take the risk, especially since they have next to nothing else to use as leverage against the Paquete King.

The next morning, in King Thala's presence, Cyrus makes three requests as discussed with Dahlia; temporary authority to dispatch the minerals from the Northern Mountain mines to use as part of the Tara Kingdom's resources for the trade, explicitly allow her wife to accompany her on this trip, and a third final request to grant upon her successful return from Paquete. Noticing the King's displeasure at the ambiguity of the third request, Cyrus demonstrates her reverence for the King's benevolence, and readily offers her life as a sign of loyalty to the kingdom. The King eventually agrees to Cyrus' requests, on the condition that should she return unsuccessful, the noble prestige of the Langston family, including Dahlia, will be stripped completely. Cyrus silently expresses her guilt for implicating Dahlia in the consequences, but Dahlia, resolved on helping Cyrus till the end, reassures her. Resolute, Cyrus agrees to the King's conditions, and the two are given three days to set off to Paquete.

However, on the way there, they discover Aaron had followed Dahlia onto the ship as well, and Cyrus' real identity is discerned by Aaron almost immediately. Aware of the dangers once they are on Paquete ground, Cyrus allows Aaron to come along to ensure Dahlia's safety. Noticing Aaron's distress, she eventually confirms Aaron's suspicions on her identity herself, clarifying that their marriage is one of convenience so as to assure him - although said with some reservation. Now aware of the truth, Aaron vows to protect both Dahlia, as well as Cyrus' secret. Upon reaching Paquete, however, their meeting with the King is continuously delayed. Eventually, they decide to take the initiative and come up with a ploy to attract the attention of their escorting officer.

Thankfully, their plan is met with success, and they are soon summoned to meet King Paquete. Instead of the palace, however, the trio are taken to the palace hunting grounds instead. There, they discover that the King has captured Winni, an orphan half-beast that Dahlia and Aaron had adopted in Leto. Together with Winni, Olive and Aaron are then made to participate in a hunting game, where they would attempt to help Winni survive. However, when Aaron's half-beast features are revealed in the process, King Paquete, realising his identity, calls off the hunt prematurely, and finally invites the group to a banquet at the palace for an audience. However, even though Cyrus offers up the entirety of the Northern Mine as leverage, King Paquete demands for Aaron as the price for their alliance. Aware of how important Aaron is to Dahlia, Cyrus refuses King Paquete's proposal, which provokes his anger, revealing that he had no intention to negotiate, as well as Prince Victor's collusion with him. The trio are then surrounded by troops, and Cyrus hurriedly hands her rings to Dahlia while ordering Aaron to get Dahlia to safety. While holding off the soldiers, Cyrus is captured in the process, and is sentenced to death along with the rest of the captives from Fort Hawke.

Later, it is revealed that Cyrus had actually carved the recipe of an explosive substance (most likely Cloud Smoke) onto the rings, thus giving Dahlia and Aaron the perfect opportunity to create a distraction to save the imprisoned half-beasts by destroying the Paquete cargo ships. This incident would also make the Paquete King realise the stakes at hand with the sheer firepower available at the Tara Kingdom's disposal, thus making him finally accept Cyrus' negotiation terms. Cyrus is later freed along with the other captives, and eventually reunites with Dahlia and Aaron at the envoy farewell. Relieved that Dahlia is unharmed, she thanks Aaron for protecting Dahlia, but is met with hostility instead, as Aaron reminds her that an imposter will always be an imposter.

Back at the Tara Kingdom, the trio are invited to the palace to celebrate their triumphant return. As Cyrus recounts the events that happened at the Paquete Kingdom, she offers up a letter sent to King Paquete by Prince Victor, together with the previously found arrowhead, exposing him as the traitor in front of the King. Prince Victor is subsequently convicted and taken away. The events from this scene onwards differ, depending on the previous choices made:

  • In the "Deceased Duchess" and "Duke's Façade" endings, Prince Victor exposes Cyrus' identity as a woman before the King as he is taken away. Cyrus confirms Prince Victor's intentions and explains the rationale behind her third request and the dangers of her trip to Paquete. Despite offering the formula for the explosive substance to the King as a sign of loyalty, her request to be recognised as a woman is unfortunately met with refusal, and she is instead ordered to remain as the Duke Cyrus Langston in the eyes of the public. At night, Cyrus questions Dahlia about her intentions once more.
    • In the "Deceased Duchess" ending, Dahlia refuses to give up her freedom for Cyrus, despite having been through thick and thin with her. Cyrus notes how soft-hearted Dahlia is, going so far as saying how she's fully capable of getting Dahlia to stay if she wanted to, but will not do so. She then orders Dahlia to leave before they reach Leto, and covers up her disappearance as a tragic untimely death, and vowing to never marry again as the Duke. After everything has settled, Cyrus appears once more at the very end where she visits Dahlia, who is now free and back at Fort Hawke.
    • In the "Duke's Façade" ending, Dahlia recalls how Cyrus had mostly lived a life filled with solitude and fear, which renews her resolve to stick by Cyrus. While Cyrus is delighted by Dahlia's decision, she expresses her regret over not being able to annul their marriage, as well as her fear over Dahlia regretting her choice. Dahlia then reassures her that they can find new dreams to pursue, which makes Cyrus look forward to their future.

In the "Hope Restored" ending, Prince Victor is thoroughly exposed of his numerous crimes, and is successfully convicted. In light of her service to the kingdom, Cyrus is recognised as the first female Grand Duke of the Tara Kingdom, and her marriage with Dahlia is successfully annulled. At night, Cyrus, now having returned to her original appearance as Olive, gives Dahlia a final chance to back out, but Dahlia reaffirms her desire to stay without hesitation, recounting the adventures they had together and expressing her anticipation for the future. Delighted, Cyrus expresses her contentment, and excitedly starts planning their itinerary for the remaining ten days of their return trip to Leto together with Dahlia.

Upon their return to Leto, Cyrus is initially worried about her people's reactions, having lied to them for years about her true identity. However, her worries are soon unfounded, as she later finds out that the women, inspired by her feats as the Duke, have become much more empowered. In light of the changes in their society, Cyrus promises to do her best to remain worthy in the eyes of the people. She reminds Dahlia once more about their now annulled marriage, and asks her if she wishes to remain by her side, to which Dahlia reciprocates wholeheartedly.
