- Louis XVI: My Queen, why are your garments...
- Marie: This is my costume, Your Majesty.
- Louis XVI: Very well. Though it looks plain, it cannot obscure your beauty.
- Marie: Your Majesty seems a little displeased.
- Louis XVI: No. As France's most noble queen, no garment can hide your brilliance.
- Count of Provence: Your Majesty is never short on praises for the Queen.
- Blaisdell: Naturally. But I am rather curious as to what kind of play the Queen has prepared.
- Blaisdell's eyes twinkle mysteriously. This makes me feel inexplicably guilty.
- His Majesty is in a good mood today. He has brought many officials with him. But I cannot imagine...
- ...what kind of conclusion will he come to after understanding my intention.
- d'Eon: There are many noble lords supporting us today. I must thank Your Majesty.
- Louis XVI: Everyone deserves a break.
- Louis XVI: I did not expect Lafayette to agree to star in a play, though.
- Lafayette: To tell you the truth, Your Majesty, I didn't expect it either...
- d'Eon: Just wait and see, Your Majesty. Our Marquis de Lafayette is a natural talent.
- Louis XVI: That is... inconceivable.
- Marie: I think you should all refrain from teasing the Marquis.
- Marie: He might exercise the rights of the judge onstage and hand down sentences.
- Louis XVI: So the Marquis is playing a judge? That is similar to my own position.
- Marie: Not the kind of judge you have in mind. Your image of Lafayette might be shattered once the performance is over.
- Louis XVI: Hearing you say that, I am looking forward to the play even more.
- Count of Provence: I am most looking forward to seeing the Marquis onstage, which itself is definitely a historic moment.
- Louis XVI: Let us not put too much pressure on Lafayette.
- Louis XVI: But you've not yet told us the title of the play, my Queen.
- Marie: Allow me to surprise you, Your Majesty.
- Louis XVI: The Queen is being very intriguing today.
- Louis XVI: Let's start right away then.
- Marie: Yes, Your Majesty.
- Act One
- Fersen: "19 feet wide, 26 feet long."
- Marie: "Hey, Figaro. Look at my little hat. What do you think?"
- Fersen: "Nothing could be better, my beloved. Ah! These flowers that symbolizes chastity are worn highly on a beautiful lady's head—"
- Fersen: "They look so sweet in the eyes of the husband on the wedding morning!"
- Marie: "What are you measuring, dear?"
- Fersen: "My dear, I am trying to ascertain whether the beautiful bed that the Lord gifted us can be placed here."
- Marie: "In this house?"
- Fersen: "It is something he rewarded us with."
- Marie: "I, I will not accept it."
- Fersen: "Why?"
- In between transitions, I glance at the audience. The Earl of Provence seems to be whispering something in the king's ear.
- To ensure our performance proceeds smoothly, in the beginning at least, I modified the lines so character names wouldn't be heard.
- But it seems some people are already noticing something familiar...
- Count of Provence: Your Majesty, do you recognize these lines?
- Louis XVI: Hush, keep watching.
- Act Two
- Marie: "Later, when he saw me holding the ribbon that you used to tie your hair at night, he stepped forward and asked—"
- Gabrielle: "—for my ribbon. How childish!"
- Marie: "I wanted to take it back, Madame. He's like a lion, with eyes glowing..."
- Gabrielle: "What happened after that?"
- Marie: "What happened, Madame, is that can there even be an end with that little devil? One moment he speaks of his godmother, the next he says he misses her."
- Marie: "Because he didn't even have the mettle to kiss Madame's robe, and so he tries to kiss me instead."
- Gabrielle: "Let's not... Let's not talk about these silly things anymore. Later, when my husband arrives, my dear Susanna, he will talk to you..."
- Marie: "If I refuse to obey him, he will protect Marceline."
- "Rosina" stands up suddenly, furiously fanning herself with a fan as she speaks.
- Gabrielle: "He does not love me anymore."
- Blaisdell: The Duchess of Polignac's performance is truly fantastic. She looks as if she really has been betrayed by her husband.
- Louis XVI: Indeed. She even used her props to great effect. The furious fanning reflected her current feelings.
- Louis XVI: But my Queen is still the best performer. That quick wit of hers will always attract other people's eyes.
- Blaisdell: Of course.
- Act Three
- Lafayette: "His mother!"
- Fersen: "Please explain."
- d'Eon: "This is your father."
- Fersen: "Ow, ow! I'm in pain!"
- d'Eon: "Doesn't your instinct often tell you that he is your father?"
- Fersen: "Never."
- Nobleman: "Then the matter is clear. He...he cannot marry her."
- Lafayette: "This a preposterous hindrance to my plans! Where is your noble background, your official residence? You cheated the court."
- Fersen: "Court?! For these damned one hundred silver coins, I nearly had to kill this gentleman, who turned out to be my father!"
- Fersen: "After that, the court almost forced me to do an unthinkable act!"
- Fersen: "But since the heavens has preserved my reputation, I have been saved from these dangers."
- Fersen: "My father, please forgive me... And you, my mother, please hug me... Hug me with all the love a mother has."
- "Marcelina" rushes towards "Figaro" and hugs his neck tightly...
- Louis XVI: Oh my God! They are mother and son? d'Eon and Fersen?!
- Blaisdell: The mother and son are Marcelina and Figaro, Your Majesty.
- Louis XVI: What an ingenious plot twist. Simply astounding.
- Blaisdell: Look, Your Majesty. They are already happily visiting their new in-laws. To think just a few moments ago they were arguing in court over the marriage.
- Louis XVI: With this, another obstacle has been removed from Figaro and Susan's marriage. The only one left is that shameless Count.
- Louis XVI: Oh, I am starting to hate Lafayette. He is a nuisance.
- Act Five
- Lafayette: "I should give her an answer."
- Gabrielle: "It should be given to whoever it belongs to."
- Marie: "Another marriage fee."
- Fersen: "Of the three, this one was the hardest to come by."
- Marie: "Just like our marriage."
- Fersen: "When I was poor, people looked down on me. When I showed a little talent, they hated me."
- Fersen: "Now, I have a beautiful wife and all these properties..."
- Nobleman: "Everyone's heart will open up to you."
- Fersen: "Is that possible?"
- Nobleman: "I understand the way of the world."
- Fersen: "Not counting my wife and properties, every one of you make me feel honored and joyful."
- "Figaro" bows to the audience. Cheerful music plays, and the stage curtain falls.
- The actors return to the stage. Everyone bows in unison, awaiting the King's judgement.
- As seconds turn into minutes, I, who had high hopes, feel my heart sinking deeper and deeper, until...
- Marie: Is that... His Majesty?
- Louis XVI: Ladies and gentlemen, I have to admit this is indeed a wonderful play.
- Louis XVI: ...though Lafayette sometimes forgot to drop his seriousness, and d'Eon and Fersen's embrace was uncomfortable to watch.
- Louis XVI: I should also apologize to everyone on the Queen's behalf. I assume this was her wicked idea.
- Marie: Your Majesty...
- Louis XVI: But I have felt your hard work and sincerity. So much so that I was deeply immersed in the story, to my own surprise.
- Marie: Is it true, Your Majesty?
- d'Eon: Oh, I am greatly moved. My sacrifice was not in vain.
- Louis XVI: I think you have achieved your goal.
- Louis XVI: Every one of you have spent so much effort rehearsing such a wonderful play, I of course cannot betray your hopes.
- Count of Provence: Your Majesty, you...
- Louis XVI: I will issue an order to immediately lift the ban on The Marriage of Figaro.
- Marie: Wonderful!
- Everyone cheers, thanking the King for his wisdom. This battle without smoke is finally coming to an end.
