- I can't sleep because of what Boseman said.
- When I reach the office in the morning, I bring Mr. Kane up to date on the details of the shooting.
- I seize the chance and ask him for a favour - to let me visit the patient at the hospital I'd previously interviewed.
- Mr. Kane readily agrees.
- I rush home to change into something more appropriate.
- I wasted time commuting back and forth, so I need to prioritise my time to do what needs to be done.
- For example, visiting Jessica.
- I register under a made-up name and file for visitation as Jessica's distant relative.
- It is surprising that the nurse and security officer who take my information from me do not bother to probe further.
- As the nurse leads me into the visitors' room, I realise the corridors are cleaner and brighter than before. The patients look better too.
- It's only been a month since I went undercover, but the hospital has undergone a big change.
- This does nothing to reassure me. In fact, I feel even more uneasy.
- You: I wonder how Jessica's holding up... and if she's really the reason for my recent misfortune.
- Young Nurse: Miss Colvin, Jessica-
- Young Nurse: You! You're that reporter! How dare you come back here?
- You: I just want to visit Jessica. No other business, I promise.
- Young Nurse: Jessica? Jessica's dead!
- You: Dead? Ridiculous! It's only been a month. How could she be dead?
- You: I will see her today, no matter what.
- Young Nurse: I'm not saying this to discourage you. She really is dead. She died 20 or so days ago.
- You: Are... Are you serious?
- Young Nurse: Someone else is already occupying her room. Do you need to see he death certificate to be convinced?
- You: How did she die?
- Young Nurse: From a sudden onset of pneumonia. No one could've seen it coming.
- You: Pneumonia doesn't have to be a critical illness. How did she die from it?
- Young Nurse: Not a critical...? You've got to be joking, Miss.
- You: (Oh, I forgot. In this era, pneumonia is a very aggressive sickness.)
- Jessica is really dead. The nurse's expression tells me she's not lying.
- But I still have trouble believing that the woman who once looked reasonably healthy, was now dead.
- You: Can I see her body?
- She does nto reply, but stares at me.
- Young Nurse: Miss, your sudden arrival might cause a lot of trouble for the hospital. I need to report this to my superiors.
- She swiftly exits the visitors' room.
- I stand rooted to the ground despite knowing I could be ushered out of the hospital any second.
- The news is shocking...
- You: Is Jessica really dead?
- You: How else can I corroborate Boseman's theory?
- ???: How do you do, Miss Colvin? I'm Hope, assistant to the President of the hospital.
- Miss Hope: A nurse informed the President of your visit, though I wish you'd told us you were coming.
- Miss Hope: The President sent me to welcome you.
- You: (You mean to keep an eye on me?)
- Miss Hope: After your previous article was published, the hospital's reputation was tarnished.
- Miss Hope: But we reflected on ourselves, and upgraded the hospital facilities--
- You: Is Jessica really dead?
- Miss Hope: Miss Taylor passed away due to an illness. I'm sorry for your loss, though I'm unsure how you're related?
- I'm beginning to accept that Jessica's dead.
- You: (I won't be able to follow this line of investigation any longer...)
- I rack my brains for a solution, but draw a blank.
- You: Where is Jessica buried? Can I visit her?
- Miss Hope: She wasn't buried. We cremated her, and her ashes are stored in the hospital until we can contact a family member.
- You: Cremated? Why didn't you wait for her family before cremating her?
- Miss Hope: There was no one on file to contact.
- Miss Hope: Cremation is the usual procedure in cases like this.
- You: (Hospitals in this era can deal with patients' corpses however they want?)
- You: Did Jessica have any personal belongings?
- Miss Hope: I'm not sure, but I can bring you to the store room to have a look.
- Miss Hope waits at the entrance to the store room and I enter alone.
- I learn from the caretaker that Jessica's ashes are still here, but her things were claimed by her father on March 12th.
- You: (Didn't Miss Hope say the hospital couldn't contact Jessica's guardians?)
- You: (How did Jessica's father learn of her death?)
- You: (And I distinctly remember Jessica saying her father was already dead.)
- You: (Why would her father take only her things and leave her ashes behind?)
- You: Her father? Can I have a look at the records?
- The caretake, a skinny old man, gives me an impatient glare. He lets me examine the visitors' records book anyway.
- Caretake: See here? It says "Name: Walter Taylor; Relationship to Patient: Father".
- You: Did he provide any identification?
- Caretaker: Who would want to steal a mad woman's belongings? All that was left were useless trinkets...
- You: That's highly irresponsible! They're useless to you, but they might be very important to others!
- Caretake: That's how we do things here. If you don't like it, you can talk to the President!
- You: (I shouldn't pick a fight right now.)
- You: The records show he only took some of Jessica's things. Can I see what's left?
- The old man's patience is wearing thin, but he agrees. It helps that Miss Hope is still standing at the door.
- He unearths a cardboard storage box from the corner. There's a dirty piglet soft toy inside.
- You: (The stitching on the back of the toy is loose. ...Is there something inside?)
- You: (This might be Jessica's daughter and father.)
- You: Can I ask if the man in the photo is the one who came to collect Jessica's things?
- Caretaker: It was nearly a month ago. I don't remember!
- Despite the caretaker's foul mood, I keep trying to get information out of him. I return to the visitors' room with Miss Hope afterwards.
- You: Do you know anything about Jessica's family, Miss Hope?
- Miss Hope: No, I'm sorry. I never met them.
- You: Your hospital let an unidentified man collect a dead patient's things after you cremated her without her family's consent, Miss Hope. You said the hospital reflected on itself after my lat article, but all you really did was make everything look nicer.
- You: My previous article sold quite a few newspapers. Do you think a follow-up would be just as popular?
- Miss Hope: Is such a small matter even newsworthy?
- You: It won't be such a small matter once it's published.
- Miss Hope: You make life very difficult for me, Miss Colvin.
- You: I may not... if you can get me some information on Jessica's family.
- Miss Hope: ...Please wait here for a moment.
- Once Miss Hope leaves, I try to process everything that happened today.
- I almost forgot why I came here today...
- Because of that theory Boseman put in my head.
- If Jessica's father is dead, then who came for Jessica's things, and what do they want with it? Does he have something to do with Jessica's death? Or with what's happened to me?
- If everything's happened because of my article... perhaps I shouldn't have written it...
- Miss Hope: Here are the patient's particulars, Miss Colvin.
- You: (This is important. I'd better get a photo of this.)
- Registration: Jessica Taylor, Father, One child
- After guardian Walter Taylor's unexpected death, his will stated that one Bob Wilson assumes guardianship. Patient expenses will be borne by Wilson.
- You: (Her father's dead, and she had a child. Jessica was telling the truth. But who's this Bob Wilson?)
- You: How can I contact Bob Wilson?
- Miss Hope: If it's not on the form, it means he likely didn't give any contact details.
- You: (Did he take Jessica's thing? Why would he pretend to be Jessica's father?)
- You: (I have to find him. But I don't know how without any contact details.)
- I try to find out more about Wilson from Miss Hope...
- ...but to no avail. I can't tell if she's clueless or deliberately hiding something.
- I am exhausted when I leave the hospital. All I have is a photograph and two names.
- You: How did the people in the detective shows I used to watch do all this?
- You: Fingerprints? Blood testing? I don't think that level of analysis is possible in this time...
- I stare at the gate of the hospital, firmly shut. A cargo van is waiting to enter.
- You: That's it! Entries and exits to the hospital are registered. Whoever retrieved Jessica's things must also have registered!
- I madly sprint to security.
- I ask the nurse on duty to let me examine her records, but she shuts me down immediately.
- With no other recourse, I whip out some cash and press it in her hand.
- You: Please, just a peek. No one will even know. Please?
- Middle-Aged Nurse: ...Just a peek then. Return it once you're done.
- I flip to March 12th. I find Taylor, and his license plate number.
- You: Do you remember this Walter Taylor who visited on March 12th?
- Middle-Aged Nurse: You're joking... That was last month. I can barely remember yesterday.
- I memorise the license plate number.
- You: Thank you, I'm done. Here you go.
- It's almost night when I get home.
- The last rays from the gorgeous sunset do nothing to lift my spirits.
- Boseman's theory, and everything I learned at the hospital... My thoughts are a jumbled mess, twisting themselves into knots.
- A wave of melancholy washes over me. I only met her the one time, but Jessica's death still hurts. And I suspect there might be more to it than a bout of pneumonia.
- You: The police didn't even bother investigative the shooting. Even if I can get to the bottom fo this, and crimes have been committed, will anyone be punished?
- You: But if I somehow manage to uncover the truth, will anyone even care?
- Crime must be punished
- You: The police are corrupt. What could they achieve?
- You: Even Prosecutor Boseman can't change this entire city.
- You: Laws can't preserve our society if they only apply to some people.
- You: I can only try to make these criminals pay for what they've done, no matter what.
- Believe that people will care
- You: Although the situation is dire, I can't give up.
- You: As a reporter, I have a duty to uncover the truth and tell the world.
- You: If I were to lose hope, then who would write this story?
- You: This is what I've always wanted... I can't give up.
- ???: Do you feel inadequate in front of such a wealthy and handsome gentle man like myself?
- You: What are you here?
- Edmund Davis: Because I missed you, obviously. I haven't seen you for over a day!
- You: ...Really?
- Edmund Davis: Why the long face? Do you need any help?
- You: (Davis is probably rich, and he knows important people... Maybe he can help me?)
- You: I want to find someone. What do you suggest?
- Edmund Davis: Ah, so that's what's got you frowning.
- Edmund Davis: You're only an intern. You don't have your own informants yet.
- You: Jack? Who's he?
- Edmund Davis: Someone who can give you some information, of course. But I have to warn you, he won't work unless you pay him.
- You: Money? I don't have any money.
- Edmund Davis: If you live frugally, you should be able to pay Jack from your salary.
- Edmund Davis: Elizabeth! Here!
- You: Is that my hat?
- Edmund Davis: You left it in my car the last time I took you home.
- Edmund Davis: See you tomorrow!
- You: He came by to give me this...
- I look at the business card, deep in thought.
- You: Will he really be able to help me?
