- After seeing Rossi at the factory, I am sure he knows something about Jessica.
- For the sake of uncovering the truth, I meet up with Jack again.
- Without beating around the bush, I tell Jack I want to know more about Rossi's life prior to the factory.
- After negotiating the fee, Jack leaves in a hurry.
- As I watch Jack leave the cafe, I notice a man in a cap watching me.
- It doesn't look like he's just casually observing a stranger... But rather that he's watching me with a purpose in mind.
- I look at him, puzzled. When our eyes meet, he gets a little flustered.
- He moves his line of vision away quickly, and starts digging into his dessert.
- You: (Perhaps it's unintentional.)
- I leave the cafe.
- In the two weeks that follow, I focus on my work at the newspaper.
- After the publication of my previous article, the paper has gotten some attention.
- Just when I think everything is going my way...
- ???: ...Is that you, Elizabeth?
- You: It's me, mom. Why are you calling me at work? Did something come up?
- Mom: Liz, I don't mean to disturb you at work, but I have no choice.
- You: Mom, what is it?
- Mom: Y-Yesterday, several gangsters came by and demanded three thousand dollars to settle your dad's gambling debt!
- You: Gambling debt? I don't remember dad having a gambling habit!
- Mom: This year's harvest was bad, and the money we earned could barely cover the interest on the bank loan.
- Mom: Your dad thought he could earn a little at the casino, so...
- You: Mom, have you checked with dad? Does he really owe that much money?
- Mom: He said he did it on impulse, but those men said that if we don't pay up, they'll kill him!
- Mom: We've already mortgaged the farm and borrowed from everyone we can, but it's not enough...
- You: (Even if I could sell all my organs, I wouldn't be able to raise three thousand dollars... What now?)
- You: Mom, don't panic. I... I'll find a way.
- You: Tell them that we'll pay up. Don't let them hurt Dad!
- I reel in shock after I hang up.
- You: (Dad has always been a hardworking and down-to-earth man. Why did he go to a casino all of a sudden?)
- My instincts tell em this can't be true, but mom was really scared.
- You: (What's done is done. There's no point questioning it. I better think of a solution.)
- If I had access to money or power, solving this problem would be easy.
- But I'm just a small-time reporter.
- ???: Hello, Miss Colvin.
- The male voice sounds familiar, but I can't put my finger on where I've heard it before.
- You: Who is this?
- ???: Miss Colvin, I am Rio Rossi.
- You: (Why is he calling me? Unless...)
- I take a few deep breaths before choosing my words carefully.
- You: So it's Mr. Rossi. Is something the matter?
- Rio Rossi: Miss Colvin, let's skip the formalities, and cut to the chase.
- Rio Rossi: I guess you've heard about your father?
- You: How did you know? You must be behind this!
- Rio Rossi: This is only the beginning. If you insist on continuing your investigation...
- Rio Rossi: Your father will be a cold dead body next time you see him.
- I have no idea how he found out, but I know that I've been exposed.
- You: Despicable! Come at me if you dare! Why did you get my family involved?
- Rio Rossi: Well, it's the most effective method to deal with pesky reporters who value the truth over their lives.
- You: Utterly despicable... You think I won't call the police?
- Rio Rossi: Police?
- He roars with laughter.
- I almost forgot... He's with the Mafia. The police probably wouldn't be a problem for him.
- Rio Rossi: If you owe a debt, you have to pay it back. How does that concern the police?
- Rio Rossi: If you display more tact, then maybe we'll forgive your father's debt.
- You: I'm warning you, stay away from my family!
- Rio Rossi: That all depends on your behaviour from now on.
- The call plunges me into despair.
- But I'm more certain than ever that Rossi didn't collect Jessica's belongings for fun.
- You: (How did he find out I'm investigating him?)
- You: (That strange man at the cafe! Did Rossi send him to watch me?)
- That would explain why Rossi knows so much.
- You: (What should I do? Maybe a compromise will give me a brief respite... but it won't work in the long run.)
- You: (If I don't compromise, how do I solve this? Powerless and penniless me?)
- As I sit at my desk in a daze, a business card catches my eye.
Wrote 'Tragic Tale of a Mad Woman
- You: (Vittorio Puzo? Oh right, he gave me his business card.)
- Vittorio Puzo: I know it's your job, but you must understand that some things are not meant to be reported.
- You: (What does he mean by that? Is he telling me not to report on what happened today?)
- Vittorio Puzo: Here's my business card. Give me a call if you need any help.
- You: (He's so mysterious. But he seems to hold some power too.)
- You: (If he really is powerful, can he help me?)
- My palms start to sweat as I stare nervously at the card in my hands.
- He's offered to help, but we've only met a few times. Will he really keep to his offer?
Wrote 'Heaven, or Hell on Earth?'
- You: (Diane Boseman? Oh right, the prosecutor gave me her business card.)
- Diane Boseman: Sorry, I don't think we have time for an interview today. Here's my business card.
- Diane Boseman: Call me anytime to schedule an interview, or if you need my help.
- You: (Boseman is a prosecutor in New York. Can she help my father?)
- You: (Even if she could, would she be willing to help me?)
- You: (What other option do I have?)
- My palms start to sweat a I grow increasingly nervous.
- Edmund Davis: Hey, Elizabeth, why are you spacing out?
- You: Huh? N-nothing.
- Edmund Davis: You don't look too good. What's wrong?
- You: I...
- You: (Davis may be a bit frivolous, but he has helped me out a few times.)
- You: (If I tell Davis about this, he may be able to help...)
- You: (Argh, what do I do? Should I tell him?)
- Call Mr. Puzo
- You: I'm fine. Thank you.
- Edmund Davis: All right. If you need any help, I'm always available.
- After Davis leaves, I dial Mr. Puzo's number.
- You: Mr. Puzo, I'm Elizabeth Colvin. I apologize for the sudden call.
- Vittorio Puzo: ... Miss Colvin? What's the matter?
- You: I need to ask for your help... It's a tricky problem, and you're the only one I could think of...
- Vittorio Puzo: I remember offering my help before. Just speak.
- You: It's complicated. I may need to talk about it in person.
- Vittorio Puzo: May I have the honor of your company for dinner tomorrow?
- You: Thank you, Mr. Puzo...
- Vittorio Puzo: It's too early to thank me. I'll send someone to pick you up tomorrow.
- You: Okay. Sorry for the trouble.
- Vittorio Puzo: It's only polite. See you tomorrow, Miss Colvin.
- I cannot believe he agreed to see me so easily.
- You: (I hope my request won't put him in a difficult spot tomorrow...)
- Ask Davis for help
- You: Davis, I know this is sudden... but I need your help.
- Edmund Davis: Your face is gray. What happened?
- You: It's a long story. Let's talk over a cup of coffee after work tonight.
- Edmund Davis: Wait for me after work. We'll go together.
- Edmund Davis: Relax. No matter what it is, I'll try to help.
- You: ...Thank you, Davis.
- Call Diane
- You: I'm fine. Thank you.
- Edmund Davis: All right. If you need any help, I'm always available.
- After Davis leaves, I dial Prosecutor Boseman's number.
- You: Prosecutor Boseman, I'm Elizabeth Colvin from Gotham Times.
- Diane Boseman: Oh, Miss Colvin. Do you need something?
- You: I apologize for the sudden call, but I really need your help.
- Diane Boseman: Oh? Tell me more.
- You: If it's possible, I hope to speak with you in person. You can set the time.
- Diane Boseman: How about two in the afternoon tomorrow? I will be waiting in my office.
- Diane Boseman: The address is 753 Bright Avenue, level 5.
- You: Thank you so much. I'll be there on time.
- Diane Boseman: See you then, Miss Colvin.
- I cannot believe she agreed to see me so easily.
- We've met a few times before, but this time, it's for something personal...
- You: (Sigh, I hope she can turn my situation around...)
