  • The election is drawing near. Everyone in the office has become increasingly busy.
  • I've already sent the money Davis gave me to my parents... But I still feel uneasy.
  • White's arrival interrupts my thoughts. He tells me that Mr. Kane is looking for me.
  • I attempt to put my worries aside and proceed to Mr. Kane's office.
  • You: It's Colvin, Mr. Kane...

  • George Kane: You're here. As you know, the election is in full swing.
  • George Kane: All the newspapers are running feature stories about the candidates, and I got us a chance to interview Councilman Harris.
  • George Kane: You'll be in charge of this interview. Start preparing the materials and outline today.
  • You: Thank you for giving me this chance, Mr. Kane, but I've been busy investigating something else...
  • George Kane: I don't recall giving you a new task. What are you investigating?
  • You: A patient at the Metropolitan Hospital. There appears to be some mystery surrounding her death...
  • George Kane: That's something personal to you. What does this have to do with work?
  • You: Yes, it's personal, but I believe this is worth looking into.
  • George Kane: Colvin. I understand that you are upset about your friend's passing.
  • George Kane: But you can't just decide on what to work on because of that.
  • You: Please, Mr. Kane. Let me investigate this...
  • You: I have a feeling there's a major story there!
  • George Kane: I don't see anything newsworthy about her case.
  • You: You see, Mr. Kane, Jessica's father was a policeman who died in the line of duty.
  • You: But his files have mysteriously disappeared from the police station...
  • You: After Jessica passed away, an unknown person took away her belongings under her father's name.
  • You: There are so many questionable parts to the story. It's proof that there may be a great conspiracy behind it all!
  • George Kane: You're just speculating. You have no proof.
  • George Kane: We can't publish news based on hunches. They must be based on facts and be supported by evidence.
  • You: I have proof! I found out that the person who took Jessica's belongings is a member of the Mafia.
  • You: Add the fact that her father was a policeman, and things are definitely not as simple as they seem.
  • George Kane: I admire your courage, Colvin. But you're dealing with something very dangerous.
  • George Kane: Though most mainstream newspapers have published reports on the Mafia before, they have almost never gone into detail.
  • George Kane: It's not that no one has tried to investigate the Mafia. They have all ceased their investigations for one reason or another.
  • George Kane: Even if you manage to dig up something, I will never allow you to publish it for the safety of our paper and the employees.
  • You: Lives have already been taken, Mr. Kane.
  • You: And the deeper people bury the truth, the harder we should dig, right?
  • George Kane: Provided it is safe to do so.
  • George Kane: But what you're trying to investigate could threaten the lives of everyone at the Gotham Times!
  • You: I...

  • Edmund Davis: What's the discussion about? Can I join in?
  • Davis' sudden appearance has the effect of putting out the sparks of a huge argument.
  • Mr. Kane and I fall silent.
  • Edmund Davis: Are you having a disagreement about news topics?
  • Edmund Davis: You've only been here a few months, Colvin. Mr. Kane has more experience than you.
  • Edmund Davis: So less talking back. You should listen to Mr. Kane.
  • You: But I have my reasons too...
  • Edmund Davis: Okay, Mr. Kane, how about this. I'll pair up with Colvin to investigate the matter.
  • Edmund Davis: With us looking out for one another, we'll be able to avoid danger.
  • George Kane: Things are not as simple as you think, Davis.
  • Davis indicates he wants to talk to Mr. Kane in private and gently nudges me out of his office.
  • I have no choice but to close the door.

  • Thirty minutes pass, but Davis is still in there.
  • Worried, I tiptoe to the door and attempt to listen to their conversation.

  • George Kane: You must be accountable to the paper, Davis.
  • George Kane: Some newspapers have fallen to Mafia influence. If you insist on investigating such a story, we might...
  • George Kane: Do you want the Gotham Times to end up like them? What would your parents think?
  • You: (How does this have anything to do with Davis' parents?)
  • Edmund Davis: I will take care not to involve the Gotham Times.
  • Edmund Davis: Besides, my parents would definitely support me if they were still around.
  • You: (Davis' parents have passed away... No wonder he's never mentioned them...)
  • Edmund Davis: As the owner and publisher of the Gotham Times, I understand I must take responsibility for its content.
  • You: (Davis is the owner of the Gotham Time?!)
  • Edmund Davis: But that's exactly why I support Colvin's investigation, because I'm responsible for its content.
  • Edmund Davis: Besides, isn't it a reporter's job to uncover the facts and present them to the public?
  • George Kane: I guess you've made up your mind.
  • George Kane: Then I have nothing more to say. Stay safe.
  • Edmund Davis: Great! I knew you'd see reason.
  • Edmund Davis: I'll go tell Colvin the good news.
  • You: (I'd better return to my seat!)

  • Davis appears before me the moment I sit down.
  • Edmund Davis: I'm sorry, Colvin. I didn't manage to convince Mr. Kane.
  • You: (Didn't Mr. Kane agree to it?)
  • I observe Davis carefully and realize he is trying his best to keep a straight face.
  • You: (So he's trying to pull a prank on me. Hmph, two can play that game!)
  • You: Really?
  • Edmund Davis: Yeah, no matter what I said, he wouldn't budge.
  • I slowly lower my head onto my desk, hunch up my shoulders, and start making sobbing noises.
  • Edmund Davis: Eh? Why are you crying?
  • Edmund Davis: I was just teasing you, alright? Mr. Kane agreed.
  • You: You're lying again...
  • Edmund Davis: No, no. It's for real this time, I swear. Mr. Kane really agreed to it.
  • I straighten up and give him a wry smile.
  • Edmund Davis: Elizabeth Colvin! You were just pretending!
  • You: Hey, you tricked me firs.t I get to do the same to you!
  • Edmund Davis: Fine, it's my fault. I won't do it again.
  • You: Good.
  • Edmund Davis: By the way, has Rossi contacted you?
  • You: Not yet. But Mom said no one has come to their house lately.
  • Edmund Davis: He's probably still observing you.
  • Edmund Davis: Have you thought about how you'll get information from Rossi?
  • You: I have to meet him if I want to find out more.
  • You: I plan to prepare false evidence to confuse him, then go to the factory to pretend to negotiate with him.
  • Edmund Davis: You're going to the factory? You can't! It's too dangerous!
  • You: I have no other choice.
  • Edmund Davis: You shouldn't. You don't have to take such a risk yet.
  • Edmund Davis: Have you even thought about how you're going to get any information out of him?
  • You: ...Uh, well, I'll just meet up with him first!
  • Edmund Davis: Hey, we're partners now. You can't act on your own!
  • You: I know, I know. I'll discuss it with you.

  • I spend the next few days fabricating evidence to fool Rossi.
  • Every day after work, I stay up late to organise both the real and the fake evidence.
  • After yet another late night, I drag my tired self out of bed and prepare to head to work.

  • The phone suddenly rings.
  • You: Good morning. This is the Gotham Times, Elizabeth Colvin speaking.
  • Rio Rossi: Miss Colvin. I see you've heeded my advice.
  • You: I have stopped investigating the matter. Could you let my parents off?
  • Rio Rossi: You're still so naive, Miss Colvin.
  • Rio Rossi: I will continue to watch you... until I know for sure that you have dropped the investigation.
  • You: Hey, wait! I assure you I am no longer investigating it.
  • You: Can I meet up with you at the factory? I'll prove my sincerity to you!
  • Rio Rossi: Hmph. I already have leverage over you, Miss Colvin. I don't need your "sincerity".
  • You: Don't you want to know what I've learned so far?
  • Rio Rossi: I don't care. All I care about is that you cease your investigations.
  • You: What makes you think I wouldn't continue investigating at all costs?
  • Rio Rossi: Even at the cost of your parents' lives?
  • You: That's assuming you can have me under watch at all times.
  • You: No one is perfect. Your men will slip up eventually.
  • Rio Rossi: Miss Colvin. I have no idea what you're planning, but make sure that what you have to offer will satisfy me.
  • Rio Rossi: Otherwise...
  • You: Don't worry. Right now, all I want is for my family to be safe and for our lives to return to normal.
  • Rio Rossi: There's no need for you to come to the factory. I'll contact you again with the time and location.
  • He hangs up before I can reply.
  • That was definitely not easy, but at least I've managed to secure a meeting with Rossi.
  • I'm still worried though...
  • I can tell I'm about to uncover something big. If I don't discover the truth now, things will stay in the dark forever.
