  • Suppressing my feelings of unease, I follow Miss Harris to her room.
  • On the way there, I realise that there are scarcely any servants arounds, despite the vastness of the Harris estate.
  • Not long after we settle down in Charlotte's room, a servant knocks politely on the door.

  • Maid: Miss, would you like coffee or tea?
  • Charlotte Harris: Blue Mountain coffee, thank you. What about you, Colvin?
  • I'm so busy thinking about how to sneak into the study that I nearly jump out of my skin at the question.
  • You: Eh? Oh - the same as you.
  • Maid: Please wait a moment. Your coffee will be here shortly.
  • As her footsteps fade into the distance, Miss Harris turns back to me, with concern written all over her face.
  • Charlotte Harris: Colvin, you look so pale today, and you're so distracted too.
  • Charlotte Harris: I'm kind of worried. Are you ill?

I'm a little unwell.

  • You: Yeah, sort of... I've been busy with work these days, and didn't manage to get enough rest, that's why.
  • Charlotte Harris: You've worked hard, Colvin. You need to take care of yourself.
  • You: Thank you Miss Harris, I'll be more mindful in the future.
  • Charlotte Harris: Eh, do you want to go home earlier to relax and unwind? Maybe you'll feel better after a good night's sleep.
  • You: (I really shouldn't leave the mansion without getting the documents in the study...)
  • You: Don't worry about it. Chatting with you is relaxing too.

I feel fine.

  • You: I'm fine... I was probably too nervous earlier on, and I'm still recovering from it.
  • Charlotte Harris: Did my father make you nervous during the interview?
  • You: Ah, not that's not what I meant. It's my first time interviewing a Councilman. I'm just afraid I wasn't well-prepared...
  • Charlotte Harris: You're a serious one, aren't you, Colvin? But believe me, you did good already.

  • The servant returns with two cups of steaming coffee. We continue chatting.
  • You: Miss Harris, I remember you drank Blue Mountain coffee as well during our first interview.
  • Charlotte Harris: Ah, Colvin, you have an excellent memory.
  • We're still chatting when Councilman Harris knocks on the door.
  • Harris: Charlotte, I'm going out for a bit. A small thing, won't be long.
  • Harris: You and your friend just stay here at home and have a nice little chat. I won't disturb you.
  • You: (Councilman Harris is a gentle and amiable father in front of his daughter...)
  • Charlotte Harris: Okay, Dad. Have a safe journey.
  • Harris: Oh yes, I have three bodyguards...

Played 3-11 prior

  • Harris: I'm bringing all of them with me. If there's anything, just yell for the butler.
  • Charlotte: Alright, I got it.
  • Harris: Have a good time with your friend, Charlotte dear.

  • Harris: I'm bringing two of them with me, and the third one will remain here. Call out to him if anything happens.
  • Charlotte Harris: Okay, but I'm sure I won't need to...
  • Harris: I should go. Ladies, enjoy your afternoon.

  • Councilman Harris nods politely at me before leaving.
  • Charlotte Harris: That's my father for you... The coffee's getting cold, come, try it.
  • I force a smile for Miss Harris, and raise the coffee cup to my lips. It is warm to the touch.
  • It suddenly occurs to me that if I were to accidentally dirty my clothes, I'll have to be excused to clean up...
  • You: (I'm not sure if this is a good idea, but I'll just have to take a gamble.)
  • I awkwardly swing my arm off to the side, slamming my elbow into the table. The coffee spills all over me.
  • You: Ah!
  • Charlotte Harris: Colvin! Are you alright? Did you get scalded?
  • My clothes are stained with dark patches of coffee. I must look a sight.
  • You: Don't worry. The coffee's not that hot. But I should clean up...
  • Charlotte Harris: It must be so uncomfortable to have coffee all over you. The bathroom's at the end of the corridor. You can wash up there...
  • You: I'll go right away.
  • I get up, shoot her an apologetic smile, and quickly leave the room.

  • After washing the coffee off me, I take a look around the bathroom.
  • The place is connected to the laundry room. I dig through the contents of the laundry basket and discover a servant's uniform.
  • You: (Maybe I can disguise myself as a servant and sneak into the study. That way, even if someone sees me, I won't look too suspicious.)

  • This looks good enough now... Time is of the essence. I need to find the study before Councilman Harris returns.

  • The door to the study is unlocked. I lightly push the door open and switch on the lights, carefully evaluating my surroundings.
  • The furnishings must have cost a hefty sum, but I don't see anything out of place.
  • You: (Perhaps I should examine the things here. I might find some hidden mechanisms...)
  • The lights, inkwell, curtains, paintings mounted on walls... I run my hands over almost everything.
  • You: (The tiger statue on the table is immovable. Looks like it's mounted onto the tabletop.)
  • I try twisting it, but it doesn't budge. It finally moves when I shove with all my might.
  • As I lean forward to re-arrange the statue, I knock over a desk lamp.
  • The lamp falls to the ground with a loud crash. My heart leaps up into my throat, and I quickly bend down to put the lamp back in its place.

Played 3-11 prior

  • Standing behind the desk, a shelf catches my eye. It's directly opposite the desk, and there are some books on it.
  • Instinctively, I step forward and scrutinise the arrangement of the books.
  • You: This looks a little odd... Maybe the arrangement of the books is a clue?
  • I haven't found anything so far and I'm running out of time. I can only try my luck...
  • You: (Should I turn the statue to the left or to the right?)

Turning Sequence.

Left

  • With all my might, I twist the statue to the left. I hear a soft click.

Right

  • With all my might, I twist the statue to the right. I hear a soft click.

  • Apart from the sound, nothing happens. Maybe I should turn it again...

Left

  • I twist the statue to the left. I hear another soft click.

Right

  • I twist the statue to the right. I hear another soft click.

  • (Nothing's happening still. But the shelf has three rows of books, so maybe I should turn the statue a third time...)

Left

  • With the last of my strength, I twist the statue to the left. There's another soft click.

Right

  • With the last of my strength, I twist the statue to the right. There's another soft click.

Fail to obtain evidence

  • Nothing's changed... I check the room repeatedly, but all my effort has been in vain.
  • You: (I guess I'll have to return empty-handed. I've wasted my chance.)

Obtain evidence

  • There's a clanking sound, and the shelf slowly slides away from the wall, revealing a safe.

  • You: Inside, I find a phone book with a bunch of strange numbers, Taylor's file, and some other documents.
  • I have no time to peruse these materials. Hurriedly, I roll them up and stuff them inside my thigh-high socks.
  • My skirt conceals everything nicely.
  • Before I leave, I lock the safe and push the shelf back to its original position.

  • You: (Councilman Harris will be back soon. I need to leave the study at once. He must never find out I'm here...)
  • Just as I'm about to leave, I hear footsteps outside the door.
  • I freeze, listening with bated breath.
  • Someone pushes the door open.

Played 3-9 prior

  • Bodyguard: Who's there?
  • The guard kicks open the door and strides into the study.
  • Paralyzed with fear, I stand mutely behind the desk. There is nowhere to hide.
  • Bodyguard: Hey, what are you doing here?
  • I suddenly recall that I'm wearing a servant's uniform, and decide to pretend that I'm here to clean.
  • You: Uh... I was just cleaning and accidentally knocked over a lamp.
  • My heart is racing, but I dare not leave while the guard is still eyeing me suspiciously.
  • Bodyguard: I thought Mr. Harris doesn't' allow anyone into the study when he's not around?
  • You: Oh... I, I'm new here. I wasn't aware.
  • Bodyguard: Don't move! I don't recognise you. I'll go get the butler.
  • He goes to the door and hollers for the butler. Then he resumes watching me.
  • The butler arrives shortly, panting form the exertion. He looks at the guard in confusion before turning to look at me.
  • Butler: What happened?
  • Bodyguard: This girl here says she's new. Do you know her?
  • Butler: I don't. And I'd know all the new hires.
  • Butler: I always warn the employees not to enter Mr. Harris' study.
  • Bodyguard: An intruder! Call the police. Let's send this thief to the station.
  • You: Wait! I'm not a thief, I'm a friend of Miss Harris'...
  • The commotion has drawn Charlotte. She looks at me suspiciously.
  • Butler: Miss, the guard found this woman rummaging in the study.
  • Bodyguard: She's wearing a servant's uniform too. Clearly, she's been planning this for a while.
  • You: It's not like that. My clothes are dirty so I... Listen to me...
  • Charlotte is clearly disappointed in me. She shakes her head and turns away.
  • Charlotte Harris: Do as you see fit.
  • She leaves without a backward glance, abandoning me.
  • You: Miss Harris...

  • Nobody listens to another word I say, and the butler sends me to the police station.
  • I tell the truth during the interrogation.
  • What's worse is that nobody believes me. Everyone thinks I'm still lying.
  • Under multiple interrogations, I finally admit to "stealing state secrets", and get thrown in jail.
  • What a tragic end. I never would've expected this...

  • Sometimes, a something worth more than money is needed to obtain information. Such as friendship.
