  • Mr. Puzo lounges on the sofa. He beckons for two cups of coffee.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Miss Colvin, it's been a while. How are you coping at the Sparrow Room?
  • You: Just bumbling along...but no one notices.
  • You: Besides, we have to practice dancing every day... It's not my strongest suit.
  • Vittorio Puzo: It's hard for everyone, so take it easy.
  • Mr. Puzo's words warm my heart.
  • Knowing that Mr. Puzo is the only person who can help me now, I tell him about what happened.
  • Perhaps because I have no one to vent to, I end up telling him a lot.
  • He listens patiently, and waits for me to finish.
  • Vittorio Puzo: You've done well so far.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Now, tell me more about what you mentioned on the phone.
  • All that ranting has lifted a weight off me chest. I sip the coffee and lean back on the chair.
  • You: That stage slots are all maxed out. I can't get on stage.
  • You: Of course, I believe that my turn will come, and I'll get my chance.
  • You: I saw Juliano more than once, but I could never get his attention.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Tell me, what did you do?
  • You: I batted my eyelashes at him...and messed up my moves on purpose.
  • Vittorio Puzo: ...Just like I thought.
  • You: Am I doing anything wrong? Clearly, I'm not...not good at this.
  • Vittorio Puzo: You can learn, and I can help you.
  • Nino brings a lady with wavy, brown hair into the house.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Alicia, she's your student.
  • Alicia nods, then grabs my hand and pulls me into the next room.

  • Alicia worked in a nightclub for 10 years, so she has a ton of experience.
  • She taught me some moves and how to deal with men up close.
  • ...I've never come across any of these. It's all new to me, and makes me a little shy.
  • I take notes of her techniques, and practice them a few times with her guidance.

  • After practicing, she excitedly drags me off to the changing room.
  • I'm puzzled. Why do I need to change?

  • Alicia: Nino! We need someone to practice flirting on, and you look like a good fit.
  • You: What? Practice with him?
  • Alicia: Of course! You have to practice with an actual person to apply what you've learned!
  • Nino turns to look at Mr. Puzo, beads of cold sweat forming on his forehead.
  • He gets up hesitantly, and walks to Alicia.
  • Nino Ricci: Must I...
  • Alicia: There are only two men here. Surely you don't expect the boss to do it, do you?
  • I glance at Mr. Puzo, who seems just as calm and cool as ever.
  • He notices me looking, and looks back at me. The moment our eyes meet, I hurriedly look back down.
  • Alicia: Alright, don't be shy! Try the smile I taught on Nino!
  • I feel kinda awkward, but I try anyway.
  • It's a pity... The smile I've practiced for so long doesn't seem to work on Nino.
  • Alicia: Nino! We need you to help us check the lady's progress. Don't stand there like a statue!
  • Nino awkwardly scratches the back of his head, takes a few steps backward, and doubles over.
  • Nino Ricci: Boss! I, I think I have a really bad tummyache.
  • Vittorio Puzo: If you need to go, go.
  • Nino looks as though he's been pardoned by the gods, and leaves the room in a flash.
  • Alicia: What's wrong with him...!
  • Mr. Puzo strolls idly towards me, his deep brown eyes looking at me indifferently.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Since Nino's not here, I'll let you practice on me.
  • Alicia and I are shocked.
  • Alicia: Uh... Are you sure, boss? Okay then!
  • I look into his eyes, and my heart skips a beat.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Come, Miss Colvin.
  • You: (Good heavens, I'm about to practice on Mr. Puzo?!)
  • You: (Alright, calm down... We're just working together. There's nothing to be nervous about!)
  • I'm still in shock when Alicia pipes up excitedly.
  • Alicia: We should recreate the nightclub atmosphere, boss!
  • Alicia: You could pretend to be a customer on the sofa, and she shall be one of the showgirls.
  • Alicia: She'll use any means possible to get your attention... What do you think?
  • You: Th-that's not a good idea!
  • Vittorio Puzo: Sounds like a great idea.
  • Mr. Puzo walks over to the sofa and sits down.
  • I stare at him in shock while Alicia giggles mischievously.
  • Alicia: Miss Colvin, what are you waiting for? Let's get started!
  • Mr. Puzo gazes at me calmly and intently.
  • I stare at him in silence. Our gazes seem tangled in mid-air.
  • The thought of practicing all that on him...makes me cheeks warm.
  • Mr. Puzo lounges on the sofa with an encouraging smile.
  • You: ...Must I practice on Mr. Puzo?
  • I look at Alicia, who nods eagerly with a wry smile.
  • Vittorio Puzo: If you need help,I'm at your service.
  • You: (Mr. Puzo hasn't even said anything in protest. Why am I acting like this?)
  • I take out my notes to revise.

  • 1. Should conditions permit, take the initiative to sit next to the target. Keep the target at arm's length, have some physical contact but don't get too close.
  • 2. Start a conversation, attempt compliments, look into his eyes when speaking, look natural and sexy.
  • 3. Use drinks as an excuse to get intimate.
  • 4. Look tipsy to reveal your sensuality, use this for further intimacy.
  • 5. When the other party gets interested, pull away slightly for maximum effect.

  • After revising, I sashay to the sofa and sit next to Mr. Puzo.
  • Following Alicia's instructions, I keep a slight distance from Mr. Puzo.
  • Tilting my legs towards him, I rest them very lightly on his.
  • ...His legs feel taut, but he's not shying away from my touch.
  • I force myself to stay calm and follow the notes.
  • Alicia: Not bad, now try inserting some charm in your conversation!
  • You: (Conversation? Are we going to pretend to chit-chat?)
  • Vittorio Puzo: What's your name?
  • You: (Mr. Puzo is playing along? That's unexpected...)
  • You: ...Oh, mister, you can call me Lisa.
  • You: It's not your first time here, is it? I've seen you around before.
  • You: Actually, I just started not long ago, so I'm still new here.
  • I smile demurely while staring into Mr. Puzo's eyes, which look just as composed as before.
  • I move a little closer to him, catching a faint whiff of musky tobacco.
  • I remember what Alicia said about compliments, and I try hesitantly.
  • You: I've never seen a man like you...
  • Vittorio Puzo: Oh? Why do you say so?
  • You: So handsome, and so gentlemanly. I'm sure you have many admirers.
  • At this point, according to Alicia's techniques, I should move even closet, but...
  • You: (I can't do such a thing to Mr. Puzo...)
  • The hand I was going to touch him with ends up grabbing the edge of my skirt instead. Mr. Puzo senses my hesitation.
  • He pulls my wrist close to him, and I grab hold of his arm, leaning gently into him.
  • I'm not holding on tightly, but I can still feel the hard muscles of his biceps...
  • Looking away in embarrassment, I suddenly realise that Alicia is gone.
  • Anyway, we have to continue practicing.
  • You: A-actually, I admire you a lot... What do you think of me?
  • Mr. Puzo turns slowly. We're so close, I can feel him breathing.
  • A crack appears in his usual composure. Is he actually flustered?
  • He regains his composure so quickly that I wonder if I just imagined it.
  • Vittorio Puzo: I've seen many women like you.
  • He takes a sip of coffee.
  • Mr. Puzo sets the cup back on the table and looks at me, calm and unruffled.
  • I'm a little surprised, but I guess Juliano would react the same way.
  • You: (Perhaps I should use Method 3 in the notes.)
  • I raise his coffee to my lips, leaving a lipstick stain where his lips had touched the cup, and I take a sip.
  • I raise my chin elegantly, showing of my slender neck.
  • Then I lick the rim of the cup and bat my eyelashes at Mr. Puzo before I set it back down.
  • You: If you knew me, you'd know I'm different from the other girls.
  • You: I'd give my heart to you. Aren't you going to give me a chance?
  • Mr. Puzo looks sternly at me, as if he's resisting my offer and putting up with me at the same time.
  • You: If you won't, just pretend I never existed.
  • You: I'm just a lonely showgirl. Maybe one day I'll disappear...
  • I pretend to look sad, and get up to leave.
  • I take a step and pretend to trip over my hem, falling over.

  • Mr. Puzo pulls on me instinctively, and we both collapse onto the sofa.
  • We can feel each other breathing. It's incredibly intimate. And surreal.
  • My heart is racing wildly, and feels like it's about to leap out of my chest.
  • We gaze at each other, and somehow, neither of us can look away.
  • I see my reflection in his deep brown eyes... I seem flustered...and confused?
  • You: (Heavens, what's happening! What's wrong with me...)
  • Mr. Puzo is silent. I can't tell what he's thinking.
  • He's still holding onto me tightly. A bizarre surge of emotions overcomes me.
  • Anticipation, palpitations, confusion, uncertainty...
  • If only this moment could last just a little longer...

  • Mr. Puzo suddenly sits up right, as if he's just recalled something.
  • I get up quickly, putting an end to the spellbound moment.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Sorry, Miss Colvin.
  • You: No, it's not your fault. I was careless.
  • My heart is still racing. I observe him helplessly.
  • You: The practice was effective. Thank you...
  • You: Next time I could--
  • Vittorio Puzo: Sorry, I can't practice with you anymore.
  • Vittorio Puzo: If you really need someone to practice with, I could send someone.
  • You: (Wasn't he okay with me practicing on him earlier? What's going on...)
  • You: W-why?
  • Vittorio Puzo: Miss Colvin, I'm sure practicing with other men won't be an issue.
  • He's right, but hearing this makes me feel strangely unhappy.
  • Vittorio Puzo: I have a lot on my hands. I'm sorry.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Miss Colvin, I have something else to attend to, so I'll go off first.
  • Vittorio Puzo: If you want to return to the club, Nino's just next door.
  • I stand rooted to the ground, stunned, confused, and upset.
  • Didn't things go well...?
  • Was I just imagining things?
