  • Juliano and I are getting well acquainted with one another.
  • He'll let me drink with him at times, and then we'd exchange a few flirtatious words. Other than that, he has not made any moves.
  • The progress is too slow for me. My patience is running thin.
  • You: I need a plan. Or should I contact Mr. Puzo? Well... I need to update him anyway.
  • Although I made that sound honorable, I still feel awkward.
  • You: Mr. Puzo hasn't contacted me at all. It might be because of that incident...

  • After mentally preparing myself, I summon the courage to walk to the phone booth.

  • The phone rings for a while before it is answered.
  • You: Hello, is this Mr. Puzo?
  • Vittorio Puzo: How are you, Miss Colvin?
  • Perhaps it's because I've not heard his voice for a while...
  • But my heart skips a beat, and I reply in a gentle voice.
  • You: Hmm... I guess there's been some success. I got to know him.
  • You: It's just that...we're not close yet.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Hm, this is better than what I expected. After all, he's a cautious man.
  • You: Is that so? He didn't look like it. I thought... I wasn't attractive.
  • Mr. Puzo suddenly lets out a soft laugh. It is so soft I thought I imagined it.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Worry not, Miss Colvin. You're not one to lack in the looks department.
  • That stumps me and I have no idea how to reply to that.
  • We are silent for half a minute before Mr. Puzo speaks again and puts an end to the awkward moment.
  • Vittorio Puzo: I understand the current situation, Miss Colvin. Don't worry, I've made arrangements...
  • I nod, and then realise that he can't see me.
  • You: Mm... Okay. Goodbye, Mr. Puzo.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Till we meet again, Miss Colvin. That will be soon.
  • You: "Soon"? Is Mr. Puzo hinting at something?

  • My confusion is finally resolved a week later.

  • As arranged, I get to perform on stage tonight.
  • The moment I get on stage, I spot Mr. Puzo!
  • You: (Heavens! Why is he here?)
  • In my shock, I mess up a few dance moves, and Mrs. Molly glares at me, gesturing angrily.
  • My eyes keep going back to Mr. Puzo, but he doesn't do anything out of the ordinary.
  • You: (What is he planning?)

  • He visits the club three times this week. Other than pointing in my direction a few times during his conversations, he behaves like a normal customer.
  • I finally get an inkling about his intentions when the weekend rolls in...

  • Mrs. Molly: From today onwards, you'll practice the new dance with Sophia.
  • You: Why am I practicing a new dance alone, madam?
  • Mrs. Molly: Silly girl, you must practice hard. This is a good thing!
  • You: Madam? I...
  • Mrs. Molly: Go! You'll understand soon.

  • The other girls have been ostracising me since the start of my solo practice sessions.
  • Even Natasha is avoiding me. We even stopped eating together... I do everything alone...
  • At the end of my practice session today, Sophia tells me that I can perform on stage.
  • Taken by surprise, I have no time to respond before she rushes me backstage to put on my makeup.

  • As I'm putting on my makeup, some of the girls start making snide comments.
  • Lily: Natasha... You certainly didn't get any good out of being nice.
  • Lily: The newcomer you've looked after is always lording over you.
  • Judy: Isn't that right? Someone got acquainted with an important person and now she's performing a solo dance.
  • Judy: And our poor Natasha is only a backup dancer...
  • Hurt and bewildered, Natasha dashes out of the backstage area with tears in her eyes.
  • I get up to chase after her, but sit down again when I realise I have no time. I can only continue putting on my makeup.
  • Lily and Judy continue making snide remarks and I finally snap.
  • You: Are you done?
  • Lily: Oh my, that startled me. How fierce you are, Lisa...
  • Judy: Oh Lily, maybe we should stop talking. Before this "celeb" complains and we won't be here tomorrow.
  • You: I swear, if you continue flapping your gums, what you just said might come true.
  • Lily and Judy shut up with a strangled look on their faces.
  • Silence settles backstage, and everyone slows down.
  • A harried stage helper comes in to rush us, and we resume the usual bustle.
  • My solo number is left for last. I feel restless but also as though something is finally settling in place.
  • I don't know what act I should put on today, but I guess I just have to trust that man...
  • Mrs. Molly: Lisa darling, it's your turn to shine!

  • Everything after that is a blur.
  • I remember walking on stage with the music booming in my ears and the bright lights hurting my eyes.
  • My mind is blank as I perform the dance.
  • Whistles, applause, flowers, and praises surround me...

  • You: (Oh yes! Praises... compliments... I remember...)
  • Vittorio Puzo: Will you have dinner with me, Miss Lisa?
  • You: I...
  • Francesco Juliano: Isn't this Vittorio?
  • Vittorio Puzo: Francesco.
  • Francesco Juliano: A rare guest...
  • Vittorio Puzo: I've been here a few times.
  • Francesco Juliano: What a pity that I've not run into you.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Indeed.
  • Francesco Juliano: It's been a while. Let's get some drinks!
  • Vittorio Puzo: Wait a moment, I haven't received a reply from Miss Lisa.
  • Juliano squints at me and then laughs loudly.
  • Francesco Juliano: Thank you for looking after my Lisa. Lisa, have you thanked Mr. Puzo?
  • Before he's done speaking, he pulls me into a tight embrace. It feels like a silent threat.
  • I remain silent and look at Mr. Puzo.
  • He still has that gentlemanly expression. It's as if he hasn't noticed that I'm in Juliano's arms.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Will you have dinner with me, Miss Lisa?
  • Francesco Juliano: Do you not understand what I'm implying, Vitto?
  • Juliano is suddenly very menacing and the air around him is tense.
  • A few of his men have their hands on their guns. A fight seems imminent.
  • Mr. Puzo waves his hand carelessly and his men quickly put their guns away.
  • Vittorio Puzo: I don't want to come to blows with you, Frank. I just admire Miss Lisa.
  • All eyes turn to me.
  • The onlookers, the Sparrow Room staff, and the Mafia are all staring at me.
  • I'm finding it hard to breathe.
  • Francesco Juliano: Answer him, Lisa. Are you going?
  • A chill goes down my spine. Juliano's smile does not reach his eyes. He tightens his grip around my waist, emphasising his threat.
  • I look over at Mr. Puzo, hoping for a signal.
  • He doesn't give one. It's as though we don't even know one another.
  • You: (We've been trying to win Juliano's trust, right?)
  • You: (Why am I hesitating? I need to make a decision...)
  • I could have rejected his invitation right away, but when I look at him, I remember that incident on the sofa...
  • My rejection is part of an act, but I can't help feeling as though I've rejected him for real.
  • You: I... I'm sorry, Mr. Puzo...
  • Vittorio Puzo: It's alright, Miss Lisa. I hope we'll have a chance next time.
  • Juliano loosens his grip and even pushes me away from him. I end up closer to Mr. Puzo.
  • Francesco Juliano: Great! Now let's get those drinks.
  • Mr. Puzo nods at me before leaving with Juliano.
  • The crowd disperses and the usual activity resumes.
  • Lily: Oh? That's it? Nothing amazing about that girl after all...
  • Judy: Yeah, nothing to be scared of. Let's go!
  • I'm left alone by the sofa...

If you saved Darya

  • Only Darya walks over and talks to me in a low voice.
  • Darya: There aren't any good souls in the Mafia. Be careful regardless of who you follow.
  • You: Darya, you...
  • Darya: This is just to repay you. Don't overthink it.
  • You: You... Why would you say that? Those two?
  • Darya: You don't know?
  • You: What should I know?
  • Darya: Heh, I should applaud your bravery. I was nearly sent away the last time...
  • Darya: They almost put me in Juliano's brothel.
  • You: (I never expected Darya to tell me about this. I better act surprised.)
  • You: Oh my! Why would they...
  • Darya: Why not? It's a business with no capital. They wouldn't hesitate to make use of us that way.
  • Darya: They even make use of children the same way!
  • You: Children! You mean?
  • Darya: It's not a good thing to know too much.
  • You: How do you know about so many things?
  • Darya: No harm telling you, I guess. One of Juliano's men used to be my lover.
  • Darya: He was the one who told me. Pity I was blinded by love. Look where I am now.
  • Darya: If I hadn't met him again, I wouldn't be in this state, and I wouldn't have all these memories...
  • You: Oh, Darya...
  • Darya: Save your pity for others! We owe each other nothing now!
  • Darya turns and leaves, sashaying across the floor. On her way out, she throws a few winks at the customers.
  • You: (They dare lay their hands on children? Does that include the missing girls?)

If you didn't save Darya

  • Mrs. Molly exchanges greetings with the others, and to my surprise, makes her way back towards me.
  • Mrs. Molly: You're quite lucky, aren't you? I chose the right girl.
  • Mrs. Molly: Whatever you're thinking, you better wise up since you chose Mr. Juliano.
  • You: But I rejected Mr. Puzo...
  • Mrs. Molly: Stupid girl. The future's not up to you.
  • Mrs. Molly: Let me give you some advice. You better make him happy or you'll be in a worse position than Darya's!
  • She looks at my pale face, nods in satisfaction, then turns around and leaves.
  • You: (A plight worse than Darya's. What is she implying?)

  • The people around me leave the area and I slowly make my way back to my room.
  • So much has happened today. I need some time to digest it all.
  • I guess I'm closer to Juliano now...
