- Before we can recover from our shock, Davis and I find ourselves at the police station.
- The police place us in separate interrogation rooms.
- Young Cop: Sit tight. Someone will be here to take you statement shortly.
- The officer leaves abruptly.
- With just silence for company, I think about tonight's events.
- You: (I've been here on many occasions, but it's my first time as a suspect.)
- You: (Isn't it odd how the police showed up right after Rossi was killed?)
- You: (Did someone else notify the police? But we were the only one there...)
- A listless, middle-aged officer enters the room and sits across the table.
- He yawns and opens the file in his hands.
- Middle-Aged Cop: The deceased is...Rio Rossi, witness...Elizabeth Colvin?
- Muttering, he eyes my bloodstained clothes.
- Middle-Aged Cop: Strange. I thought you were a suspect...
- Middle-Aged Cop: *Cough... cough...* Why were you with Rio Rossi at the moment of his death?
- You: (Should I say I was following Rossi? It may be hard to explain why though...)
- Middle-Aged Cop: Why are you hesitating? It's just a simple question!
Tell the Truth
- You: I... I was tailing Rossi with a colleague.
- Middle-Aged Cop: Why's that?
- You: I'm a reporter with the Gotham Times. Rossi is closely linked to a story that I'm working on.
- You: After setting up a fake meeting with Rossi, I decided to follow him with a colleague to get more information.
- Middle-Aged Cop: Tsk tsk. You reporters will do anything just to get a story.
- Middle-Aged Cop: Did you spot the killer?
- You: ...No, we did not. We only heard gunshots when we were near the house.
- You: And then Rossi left the house alone and ran into an alley.
- You: We thought he might need help so we ran after him but all he wanted was the phone booth.
- You: He died after making the call... and that's when the police found us.
- After hearing my account, he glances at his file and furrows his brows.
- Middle-Aged Cop: Alright. Now tell me about the story you are working on.
- You: I... I don't think that's related to Rossi's death...
- Middle-Aged Cop: Your opinions don't matter here! I'll decide if it's related or not.
- You: (I can't reveal anything about Jessica yet! What should I do?)
- Middle-Aged Cop: Answer me! Does your investigation have something to do with Rossi's death?
Make Something Up
- You: (Maybe I can get some use out of Davis' terrible joke...)
- You: I was actually on a date with my colleague... We were on our way home.
- You: As we approached the phone booth, a man covered in blood stumbled out of it.
- You: He just keeled over when we asked if he needed any help.
- You: We called the ambulance... But it was too late.
- You: And that's when the police found us.
- Middle-Aged Cop: Are you certain that you have not met the deceased before?
- You: (Why is he asking about this... Does he know about my interactions with Rossi?)
- You: No. I am certain that I have not.
- Upon hearing my reply, the officer furrows his brows and gives me a stern look.
- Middle-Aged Cop: Are you sure about that? Down here, we have ways of getting you to tell the truth!
- He unholsters his baton and slams it on the table.
- Middle-Aged Cop: Now answer me! Or do you require more persuasion?!
- You: S-Stop... Don't get any closer! I--
- There's a sudden knocking on the door.
- The door swings open before my interrogator can get to it.
- Young Cop: The Chief wishes to speak to you, Miller.
- Officer Miller shoots me a look that tells me he will return to finish our 'discussion'.
- He leaves the interrogation room.
- You: (I'm safe, for now. I wouldn't have been able to answer his question...)
- Officer Miller returns to the room after about 10 minutes.
- I can't decide which is the bigger surprise. His smile, or that he is asking me to leave the room.
- I follow him out of the interrogation room even though I am unsure of what is going on.
- I see Davis chatting with a portly, middle-aged man at the corridor outside the room.
- If this weren't the police station, you might have mistaken them for old friends engaging in idle chatter.
- Edmund Davis: Ah Chief, let me introduce you. This is my colleague, Elizabeth Colvin.
- The man acknowledges me by cracking a playful smile.
- Police Chief: Nice to meet you, Miss Colvin. Mr. Davis has explained the situation about the murder to me.
- Police Chief: Don't worry, I'll keep it a secret.
- You: ...Keep what a secret?
- Edmund Davis: About how we were both at the scene of the murder. This was clearly just an act of gang violence.
- Police Chief: Indeed. How can someone of Mr. Davis' background be associated with a murder?
- Police Chief: It has been a long night. Don't worry about your statements. Go home and get some rest.
- You: (We can just go? Someone just died. And the station is this laidback about it?)
- Edmund Davis: We will be leaving then, thanks Chief.
- Despite my unease, I leave the station with Davis.
- You: (I'll get to the bottom of things later.)
- It is no longer raining, and the streets are a lot emptier this early in the morning.
- You: Davis. Why did the Police Chief--
- You: W-What's going on?
- ???: Mr. Davis! How are you linked to the deceased, Rossi?
- ???: Is she your girlfriend? Were the two of you at the scene of the murder?
- ???: As the owner of the Gotham Times, will you be reporting this in your papers, Mr. Davis?
- A few photographers corner us right at the exit of the police station.
- Edmund Davis: Oh dear, this is not the type of collaboration I had in mind...
- You: Did somebody tip them off? How do they know about this already?
- Edmund Davis: The police has always been a source of information for the press. It's also a good way for the officers to earn some money on the side.
- You: (The police of this era are way too lax.)
- You: Let's get out of here! They won't be able to stop us!
- The reporters notice our attempt, and form an even tighter circle around us.
- Edmund Davis: We're done for...
- We're wondering what to do when a familiar voice comes from behind us.
- Bob Wilson: You can't be crowding around here! This is a police station!
- Bob Wilson: The two of you, come with me.
- You: Come in? A-Ah... Okay!
- I'm uncertain of Wilson's intentions, but we're not in any position to turn him away right now.
- Edmund Davis: Is there something wrong, officer? We have already submitted our statements.
- Bob Wilson: Looks like you've disregarded my advice, Miss Colvin.
- Edmund Davis: You've met this officer?
- Bob Wilson: Hmph. I would've preferred if we'd never met before.
- You: He's the Bob Wilson I spoke about...
- Bob Wilson: It's bad enough you're involved. You've told him too? Do you want him dead?
- Bob Wilson: And now Rio Rossi is involved... When will you be satisfied?
- You: I don't want anyone to die, Officer Wilson.
- You: I told Davis because I needed his help.
- You: When I got to a dead end in the investigation, I could only turn to Rossi for more information.
- Bob Wilson: I see how it is. You're trying to blame me for not giving you more information.
- You: That's not the case. After all, you are not obliged to help me in any way.
- Bob Wilson: There's no point in talking about this now. A man has been killed.
- Bob Wilson: If you continue your investigation, it's just a matter of time before you meet the same fate.
- You: (Sure, Rossi is dead because of this... But why is Wilson so certain about that?)
- You: (How much more is he hiding from me?)
- He must be investigating the deaths of Walter and Jessica Taylor in secret. Maybe...
- You: (If I told him what Rossi said before dying, will that change his attitude towards me?)
- You: (But if he is really against me doing this, it will only anger him more...)
- Share Rossi's Dying Words with Him
- You: I realise the dangers of this investigation but I've found a lot of important information.
- I tell Wilson everything Rossi said to me before his death.
- Wilson looks grim after hearing Rossi's dying words.
- He sinks deep in thought for a while. Then he turns his attention back to us.
- Bob Wilson: What's the point of telling me all this?
- Bob Wilson: Rossi is dead. So all of this "evidence" you just told me is worthless.
- Bob Wilson: Even if you make the information public, you will only endanger yourself further.
- You: I...
- Keep Them to Yourself
- You: I realise the dangers of this investigation but I've found a lot of important information.
- Bob Wilson: Miss Colvin. Do you think the information you have obtained can be used as evidence in court?
- You: That... wouldn't be possible.
- Bob Wilson: Even if you make the information public, you will only endanger yourself further.
- Bob Wilson: It's time you put an end to this. Your efforts will amount to nothing.
- Bob Wilson: Don't mistake what you're doing as persistence. In this current state, you're just being stubborn.
- Edmund Davis: Ahem!... Have the two of you forgotten about me?
- Edmund Davis: May I say a few words, Officer Wilson?
- Bob Wilson: ...
- Edmund Davis: While it can't be used as evidence in court, the information is enough for us to continue our investigation.
- Edmund Davis: How can you be so sure we won't find any hard evidence if we continue?
- Edmund Davis: Even as last resort, we will never release this information to the public.
- Edmund Davis: We are also capable of protecting ourselves. There's no need for you intimidation.
- Edmund Davis: I volunteered to help Miss Colvin with this, and I am well aware of the consequences.
- Edmund Davis: There is no need to admonish her over this.
- Bob Wilson: The two of you are free to do as you wish. ...But consider this my last warning, Miss Colvin.
- After Davis' spirited tirade, Wilson appears to have lost his patience and ushers the both of us out of his office.
- He directs us to the back door of the station before we leave. Actions like these make it difficult for me to grasp his true intentions.
- You: Phew... We're finally out of there.
- Since Rossi's departure from the house, we've found ourselves in endless predicaments...
- Looking at the empty street, I can finally feel some semblance of peace.
- There are so many things I wish to confide in Davis, but I find it hard for some inexplicable reason.
- While I'm still struggling to find the words, Davis breaks the silence first.
- Edmund Davis: Hey, Elizabeth. Don't you want to know what I said to the Police Chief?
- I recall the Police Chief's playful smile and feel a little ill at ease.
- Edmund Davis: I told him that we're having an affai--
- You: H-How could you say that? No one would want an affair with you!
- I reach over to teach Davis a lesson but he dodges me easily.
- Edmund Davis: Calm down, Miss Colvin! You'll have to go on investigations alone if you hurt me!
- You: That's what you get for making things up!
- The empty street is usually dull and lifeless at this unearthly hour.
- But because we're together, even the bleakest time of night can seem a little blissful.
