  • You: Vittorio, it's me... I... So much happened today...
  • Vittorio Puzo: Elizabeth, calm down! What happened?
  • You: Leonard... is dead. It was... me... Juliano...
  • You: I let him down. Oh my goodness, what have I done...
  • Vittorio Puzo: ...I'm sorry, Elizabeth. But don't beat yourself up, this is our fate.
  • Vittorio Puzo: He was just unlucky.
  • You: Sorry, I... Damn it, I thought I was prepared for this...
  • You: But... everything happened too fast... too real...
  • You: I really... I want to see you...
  • Vittorio Puzo: You can. But... after what happened to Leonard, we need to be even more careful.
  • Vittorio mulls it over a minute before giving me a solution.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Bring some clothes out with you tomorrow.
  • Vittorio Puzo: If anyone asks, you are going out for lunch and need to send some clothes to the laundry on the way.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Go to Salumi on Kinney Street. Order something, then call me from the public phone by the bar.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Can you remember that, Elizabeth?
  • Vittorio's meticulous planning calms me down.
  • You: I'll remember.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Don't worry. No matter what happens, we'll take them on.
  • Vittorio Puzo: See you tomorrow.
  • You: See you tomorrow.

  • After hanging up, I trudge back to my bedroom.
  • Everything comes crashing on me, and the light before me fades into darkness.
  • Just like my life, where there is only gloom and bleakness.

  • The Next Day

  • As I pack the clothes for the laundry, I think about how to tell Puzo what happened yesterday.
  • Leonard's death... my mistake... the truth... there's too much.
  • I need to remain calm. I can't give anyone the chance to pick up on what I'm doing.

  • There aren't any problems when I head out.
  • Nobody asks where I'm going. No strange men demand my whereabouts.
  • You: Thank goodness, I really don't need any more trouble today...

  • I hail a taxi to Salumi, and place an order.

  • I pick at the food disinterestedly. Since my life's been thrown into chaos, I have zero appetite for even the most sumptuous feast.
  • I just hope for some direction, or a chance to tell someone all of this.
  • Luckily, I'll be able to do that in just a few hours.
  • While waiting for the food, I head to the public phone to receive my next instructions.
  • You: Vitto... Mr. Puzo, it's me. I'm at Salumi.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Enjoy your lunch first, Elizabeth.
  • Vittorio Puzo: An hour later, go to the back of the restaurant, and take the taxi with the plate number ending in 287. It'll bring you to a safe place.
  • You: Okay.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Don't worry, Elizabeth. We'll see each other soon.
  • I don't say much beyond softly agreeing.
  • Vittorio Puzo: See you in a bit.
  • I finish my lunch with a heavy heart. I keep watching the clock, restless, hoping it'll move faster.

  • One Hour Later
  • I grab my bag of clothes and walk out of the restaurant, towards the back door.
  • The taxi with the plate ending in 287 is waiting.

  • I walk to the taxi. The driver is smoking. He glances at me and my bags, then presses the horn.
  • Middle-Aged Man: Are you going to Kenny's Laundry, Miss?
  • I freeze for a moment, confirming the car plates again before nodding.
  • He inclines his head, indicating I should get in the car.

  • I haven't gotten my bearings when the car starts moving.
  • This man doesn't seem like one of Vittorio's.
  • Out of safety precautions, I try to feel out his role in this.
  • You: This... how did you know I was going to Kenny's Laundry?
  • Middle-Aged Man: Someone already paid, hmph.
  • He seems to have misunderstood my motive and profession, but that's not surprising.
  • You: May I know who paid?
  • Middle-Aged Man: Miss, my job is to drive the car and get paid. I can't tell you anything else.
  • Seeing his obstinance, I lose interest in asking anymore questions.
  • I soon arrive at Kenny's Laundry.

  • The taxi hastily leaves after I alight.
  • An enthusiastic laundry lady appears at the door and pulls me into the shop.
  • Laundry Worker: Leave the clothes to us, miss.
  • Perplexed, I pass them to her, then I'm brought to another bedroom.
  • The lady tells me I can go out the back after changing into a different set of clothes. Someone's waiting for me.

  • Today's set-up is giving me the full spy experience, but it also soothes me a little.
  • I go out through the back door to discover Nino waiting for me.

  • Nino Ricci: The boss is waiting for us, Miss Colvin.
  • You: Okay. Right, do you know...
  • Nino Ricci: About Leonard?
  • Nino Ricci: I already know, Miss Colvin. It's not on you.
  • Nino Ricci: Leonard's a good fellow, but quite unlucky.
  • You: Really? Maybe... there's a better way...
  • Nino Ricci: Our thing is dangerous, Miss Colvin.
  • Nino Ricci: If it hadn't happened yesterday, it might have happened tomorrow. We have less days to enjoy ourselves.
  • You: (Not yesterday, then tomorrow? Is this my fate?)

  • Time passes as I sigh heavily. After a day of running around, I finally arrive at Vittorio's current residence.

  • You: Vittorio... I...
  • Vittorio Puzo: Elizabeth, relax. Drink some water, calm down.
  • You: I'm fine... It happened so suddenly...
  • You: I tried asking Juliano about the brothel he opened, and he didn't seem to mind.
  • You: But after I mentioned Rossi, he reacted very strongly and got suspicious.
  • You: That led to what happened later...
  • Vittorio puts my hand in his, comforting me. I smile at him and continue my story.
  • You: I thought I had him fooled, but he wasn't...
  • You: He found out Leonard might be linked to you, and forced me to...
  • You: Forced me to hurt Leonard... Oh heavens... What have I done...
  • Vittorio Puzo: It's not your fault. It's Juliano's fault.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Leonard won't blame you, so stop blaming yourself, alright?
  • Looking at the determination in his eyes, I feel a little stronger and nod.
  • You: Vittorio, I want to avenge Leonard...
  • Vittorio: Okay, what do you want to do?
  • You: I have Juliano's testimony, I can expose him...
  • You: I can go to the police station and look for the inspector!
  • Vittorio lets out a soft chuckle, interrupting my passionate speech.
  • Vittorio Puzo: What evidence do you actually have? Anything besides this "testimony"?
  • You: I... I... no.
  • Vittorio Puzo: You're already on a path, Elizabeth.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Other than our solution, there's no other way to punish him. Do you understand?
  • You: Vittorio, this is not what I want...
  • Vittorio Puzo: You must know the law can't do anything about us, Elizabeth.
  • Vittorio Puzo: The only penalties we ever face are related to tax.
  • Vittorio Puzo: As for the blood on our hands, only more blood can cover it.
  • Vittorio Puzo: It's time to stop being naive.
  • You: I just want him to pay the price, Vitto...
  • Vittorio Puzo: Death is the right price.
  • I'm undecided, but Vittorio forces me to look at him, using his devilish voice to charm me...
  • Vittorio Puzo: I know you want him to hurt, whether it's for Jessica, the missing girls, or Leonard...
  • You: He deserves it... he deserves it!
  • Vittorio Puzo: Shh, no matter what the method, we'll make him pay.
  • You: (No matter what the method?)

No Matter What the Method
  • You: You're right, he's hurt so many people...
  • You: He needs to be punished so their souls can find peace!
  • Vittorio Puzo: That's my Elizabeth. Believe me, we will punish him together.
  • I nod. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel...
Insist on Legal Method
  • You: Vittorio, I would have done it myself already, but he deserves a public trial.
  • You: So the world can see his crimes!
  • You: Death alone won't punish him.
  • Vittorio Puzo: This is wishful thinking, Elizabeth.
  • Vittorio Puzo: You don't have enough evidence to ever bring him to trial.
  • Vittorio Puzo: You're an ant trying to move an elephant.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Even I can't do that.
  • You: But this isn't what I wanted...
  • Vittorio Puzo: Forget what you wanted. Are you going to risk letting him get away with his crimes for a small chance at a trial?
  • Vittorio Puzo: Punishing him requires the right opportunity. Once you miss it, he'll be free forever.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Think about the people he harmed, think about him living out the rest of his life in luxury...
  • You: I...
  • Vittorio Puzo: I gave you time. Did you find any evidence against him?
  • You: I didn't...
  • Vittorio Puzo: Just leave it to me, and relax.
  • I nod shakily, unsure if this is the right choice...
  • Vittorio Puzo: Let's go through the plan again.
  • Vittorio Puzo: We need the assassinate Juliano before the Assembly.
  • I'm no longer as enthused about this as when we first discussed it.
  • Vittorio Puzo: I've checked. He contacted two other families to prepare for a large-scale drug business.
  • Vittorio Puzo: The other families are interested in the huge profits this business can have.
  • Vittorio Puzo: If we don't end him this time, he'll be too powerful.
  • Vittorio Puzo: We won't be able to touch him and New York will over flowing with drugs.
  • Vittorio Puzo: This is important, Elizabeth. Do you understand?
  • You: (What a horrible man!)
  • You: I understand... He really...
  • Vittorio Puzo: This is where I need your help, girl.
  • You: You want me to assassinate him?
  • Vittorio chuckles softly, patting my head.
  • Vittorio Puzo: I wouldn't let you do something so dangerous.
  • Vittorio Puzo: All you need to do is tell us where he is.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Can you do that?
  • You: Of course!
  • Vittorio Puzo: Brave girl, but to ensure your safety...
  • Vittorio Puzo: I'll teach you how to use a gun, okay?
  • You: A gun? I... I already... shot before...
  • Vittorio Puzo: This is different. This is for defence, for safety, okay?
  • You: Okay...
  • Vittorio Puzo: Let's go. I'll teach you how to shoot.

  • Vittorio Puzo: First, make sure the safety's off, but only before firing. It should be on at all other times to avoid accidental discharges.
  • You: Got it.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Raise the gun, aim at the target, don't shake, and pull the trigger.
  • You: Okay, I understand...
  • Vittorio Puzo: When you're firing at someone, do it in their direction and move backwards yourself, okay?
  • Vittorio Puzo: Your safety is more important than hurting them.
  • You: Alright...
  • Vittorio Puzo: Guns have recoil, so be careful.
  • You: Got it.
  • Vittorio Puzo: The gun is for self-defence, so I won't teach you how to reload.
  • Vittorio Puzo: We'll go back after practicing the last three shots?
  • I agree.

  • Vittorio Puzo: Elizabeth, you did well today, but it's late...
  • Vittorio Puzo: You have to go back.
  • You: Alright. Goodbye, Vittorio.
  • Vittorio Puzo: Don't forget this...
  • Vittorio Puzo: When the time comes, protect yourself.
  • I nod firmly at Vittorio, promising him.

  • Nino sends me back to the laundry, and I find they actually cleaned the clothes I left with them.
  • I take the washed clothes back to the Sparrow Room. Nobody thinks it's strange that I did laundry the entire day.
  • I lay on the bed for another sleepless night...
