Letters[]

First Letter

Ms. Edith Dauterive

I hope I'm not bothering you with my letter, but I'd like to apologize for accidentally entering your home earlier today. Miss Beauchamp didn't mention your arrival date, nor did she remind me of your beauty and intelligence. Perhaps you thought I extended the olive branch for Miss Beauchamp's sake, or even worse for other motives. However, I have to tell you that the one thing I'm proud of is my vision. I can see you're a talented architect with a bright future. I have no doubt about it. You're just like Miss Beauchamp. I'd like to take this opportunity to wish you all the best in finishing what she couldn't, which is to make a name for yourself in Chicago. May you have a wonderful time at the World's Fair Hotel.

H. H. Holmes

Second Letter

Dear Edith

As I write another letter to you, I'm surprised to find myself having so much to say. After spending some time with you, your beauty and intelligence have left a deep impression on me. I'm glad with my choice. I realize you seem to be very interested in the history of the World's Fair Hotel, so I'll do a brief introduction here. When I was a child, I dreamed of owning a castle. I arrived in Chicago during the autumn of 1886, and I worked as a pharmacist down at South Wallace Avenue. It was a small drugstore, but it had a unique and beautiful structure. I swore to own it, and I reached my goal in 1887. I hadn't decided what I wanted to do with it then, so I had a single floor apartment built. Then in 1892, inspired by the World's Fair, I added three floors to it to welcome friends from all over the world. That is the hotel you see now. I've finally fulfilled my dream of owning a castle. Again, I'm honored to be able to work with a talented person like you, and I sincerely hope for you to share in my dream.

Yours, Holmes

Third Letter

My Edith

I've finally decided to write this letter even if you may find it offensive, because I can no longer control my feelings. Emeline really broke my heart. I always thought we were meant to grow old together. However, there’s also a despicable part of me that’s whispering a hard truth I’m not willing to accept: I was actually glad that she left. It’s only because I met her before I met you, Edith. Fate can be so cruel. There’s no way I can betray someone as sweet and innocent as Emeline. However, I couldn’t bear to tear my gaze away from you too. It felt like the air was sucked away the moment I saw you enter my hotel. I felt breathless from the love that I couldn’t rein in. You might think me frivolous and pretentious, but please listen to my heart that aches for you, my dear Edith.

Love, Holmes
