Letters[]

First Letter

Cordelia,

I find your choice of piracy... questionable at best, distasteful at worst. But I have determined that worthy explorers should be ready to face any hardships for their craft, even if those hardships come in the shape of your ragtag crew and Lucky Sidney's ridiculous way of arranging the ropes.

When I look at you, I see a woman with a burning passion in her eyes. Your treasure map fragment is most curious, and so are you. There's something about your determination or sheer stubbornness that makes me believe that this voyage of ours will lead us to extraordinary places and discoveries. I plan to be there every step of the way. I am so ready to experience this remarkable world, and uncover the mysteries of the Caribbean.

The Caribbean, with its piracy, lawlessness and freak weather, is a dangerous and unpopular destination for the elite scientists. For me, I hope this is where I can prove my worth. Your wild lifestyle will suit my goals nicely.

This is how I will make my mark on history. I plan to be a lot of trouble. I fully intend to overturn what we know, ruffle a lot of feathers and prove my brilliance to the Royal Society.

Our causes and passions are aligned.

Let's discover the world together.

Soon to be Royal Society Member, Eric Keats

Second Letter

Dear Cordelia,

You may have noticed that when I speak with you, I occasionally stumble over my words. Occasionally, the things I want to say, although perfectly formed in my head, come out differently to how I intend.

I have written this letter because it's a little easier to give order to my thoughts when I am faced with ink and paper rather than with your sparkling eyes.

I realise that I may not be the easiest man to get along with or the most charming. I suppose, since my Father died and left our family with little, I have had to spend every day proving myself. I had to be the best to get the scholarship without which I could not study. I had to be the best in order to create status for myself in a world where the youngest son of a normal family has no position. I have to be the best to join the elite Royal Society. As you can see, I am used to fighting hard for everything I have.

And yet, since joining your crew, I have had the strangest feeling. You have said you value me not for my brilliance or elitism... but for myself. Occasionally, I find myself shedding the pressure of being the best. It's like I can finally breathe, and just live in the moment. And the strangest thing of all is that this is when I am most open to wonder and new ideas, this is when I am at my best as a thinker, scientist and explorer.

Let's just say, you have shown me things I never thought were possible. And I am not just talking about mermaids and hidden, semi-magical islands.

Your Hopeful Explorer, Eric Keats

Third Letter

Dear Cordelia,

Our world is beautiful and strange. I see that now. Our voyages have shown me that life is so much greater than elite academic circles and dusty tomes! What do you know of rainbows? In Greek legend, it is said the rainbow goddess Iris is a messenger between mortals and gods, linking the Earth and the sky. Is this not beautiful?

However, the physicist Isaac Newton shows rainbows are formed when sunlight enters thousands of water droplets, and is refracted into seven different colors. The position of the sun, the rain and the observer need to be just right for a rainbow to form.

People often accuse science of ridding this world of wonder and poetry. They say Newton's explanation reduces the mystical rainbow to merely a set of prismatic colours.

Personally, I have never understood this criticism. For me, science does the opposite. Do you see the wonder of Newton's explanations?

For me, science uncovers a hidden world of poetry and beauty. It challenges us to rise above the soporific effects of familiarity, and re-see the things we encounter every day in a new light. When viewed through science, even the humblest moss or woodland creature can be a wonder. Science does not rob the world of poetry, it reveals a secret world of poetry.

I have seen your face when we explore a new horizon. Your curiosity and intelligence are like burning fires within you, and your eyes glow with passion. I never imagined I would find someone to share my passion with. I suppose, in all my hypotheses about the world, I never accounted for you.

You are my greatest discovery, that all logic and rationality cannot explain or account for.

We will fill the world with our unique poetry together.

There is no mystery [too] deep that we cannot uncover it together.

Your Partner in Discovery, Eric Keats
