Letters[]

First Letter

Ms. Dauterive

I'm so glad to meet you! I hope I didn't scare you today. You looked so troubled that I couldn't help calling out to you. I often try to talk to strangers, but they usually just give me a look and walk away. The few who do talk to me, often vanish after I tell them about my hobbies. You're such a rare person! I was so happy chatting with you today. So now I've followed up with a letter... I hope it's not going to give you the impression that I'm a weird person clinging onto you. Well, there really are a lot of strange people in Chicago, so just take this as practice with a harmless person.

Actually, I'm writing this letter with a request in mind... I have too few readers, and I need feedback in order to improve my writing. The people who read my stories either get too scared, or mock me. I'm including my manuscript with this letter. When you're free, please read through it, and tell me which parts you like and which parts you don't like. All the best in all of your endeavors!

McKenna

Second Letter

Dear Edith

I didn't expect you to take me in... Oh, I'm not implying that you're an unkind person. It's just that it's so hard to come across kind people in Chicago. To be honest, I never expected to make a friend here. I don't hate this place, but the city is way too cold. Have I mentioned that I'm Irish? Ireland is completely different. When my father died, a priest arranged for me to come here to study, so I shouldn't let my life fall to ruin here. Apart from my father, I've never had any friends. Oh, I'm sorry for repeating myself. It's just that I hope you'll understand how I feel. It's as if I have a home again.

Layla

Third Letter

My dear Edith

I'm so worried about you after hearing about your experience at the hotel! Holmes is such a pervert! I think we should tell Emeline what he has done. What secrets is he hiding in that hotel? My curiosity is killing me. You're so grave about it all, but I'm sure you're curious too. Why would he hire an architect and try to keep the building's structure a secret from the architect? That's not logical at all. It would make a great starting point for a mystery novel. Perhaps he has installed all sorts of mechanisms beneath the floorboards, and all the rooms can switch positions. That would make it possible for him to create a closed-room homicide! Erm, I'm not saying he's a serial killer... Oh anyway, just let me go investigate the place, please!

Love, Layla

The following segments detail Layla's story throughout Have You Seen Claudia?. This section is nothing but spoilers. Read at your own risk.

Before the Story

Layla was the daughter of a stonemason in an unnamed village in Ireland. When she was sixteen, a drunk man who had initially came to her house to place an order had attempted to assault her, but was stopped in time by her father. That same night, she heard gunshots coming from her father's room, and found him deceased. Having grown up listening to legends of ghosts and monsters from her father, the paranormal and macabre eventually became a way for Layla to reignite the feeling of a connection with her late father.

After her father's passing, a priest arranged for her to move to Chicago to study, allowing her to move out of her home village and to America alone. Some time later, she eventually found a job as a bank typist, and harbours an ambition to be a mystery novelist. She is also a member of the Whitechapel Club; a group that mostly consists of journalists sharing their personal experiences with strange encounters.
