When I lost my family, I thought I could lead a life of freedom. When I left my hometown, all I wanted was to enjoy myself and lead a carefree life.
But I overestimated myself, and never imagined I would feel such an overwhelming sense of loneliness when I arrived in the capital. When I was out, I saw people my age out with their companions and long for one of my own - someone I can talk to about anything under the sun and travel the world with, just like the leads in stories, someone I'd trust with my life.
Later, you took me in. You may not know this, but I was overjoyed when you told me I could stay. We haven't known each other long, but I believe our encounter is the first of many great things to come.

I often joke about things, but I mean each and every word I just said! When I revealed my identity to you, my heart almost stopped. I had been worried you wouldn't accept me for who I was, and my heart sank when I realized I could be asked to leave the inn. Thankfully, none of that happened, and I'm even free to be myself around you! I was elated, and if you weren't asleep now, I would have expressed my gratitude in person.
In stories, people who are honest and open with each other are often called bosom friends. I thought bosom friends were like ordinary friends - people you could travel and have fun with. That was until I met you. Now I understand what a bosom friend truly is - a person you can share all your secrets with. I never knew how great it'd be to actually have one! Do you think we could someday explore the world like the heroes in the stories? If the day does come, I'll protect you and teach you self-defense tactics, so don't worry!

Actually... never mind. I'll tell you about my hometown today.
There's a beautiful pond there and every summer, the lotus flowers awaken from their winter slumber and bloom quietly. They look like flames from afar, but up close, you realize their petals are painted in elegant hues with a slight fluorescent flow. Every being, including the egret that lives near the pond, admires the beauty of these unique flowers. Ah, speaking of that egret, it was the first friend I made outside my own kind. I wonder if it escaped from that... disaster.
Yes, we've been through some tough times together. One evening in summer, some priests broke into our world for their cultivation. Their powers were strong and the spirits were no match for them. It was a nightmare... Even after all these years, I still hear those cries of agony, the lotus petals dyed blood-red, their fluorescence slowly diminishing...
I don't remember how I escaped. When I regained consciousness, I was floating south with the river, and only one family member was with me, unconscious. We depended on each other for survival as we wandered, but one day, she left. My heart shattered when I saw the note she left beside my pillow... I was alone again.
Pain is inevitable, but life goes on. I numbed myself by whiling my time away until I managed to convince myself that nothing mattered anymore. Or so I thought.
