Letters[]
First Letter
Madame de Pompadour,
I believe we are alike in that we've both been reading and immersing ourselves in culture since childhood. Perhaps the habit has set us aside from the rest, but it has not hindered our ability to see past obstacles and view the world outside. I love the writing salons and the atmosphere in cafes - full of academics exchanging their thoughts and ideas, delving into philosophy - it is all I've ever wished for. Therefore, I have decided to host my very own salon, in order to better understand the development of art and culture, and to focus attention on society. Ever since I got to know you, I've known that we must stick together, and push forwards for the sake of our passion. Though salons have been banned, and we are facing pressure on all sides, Madame de Pompadour, your determination and spirit have banished all darkness from my heart, and encouraged me to go on.
I may still face many challenges in the process, and stumble upon many problems, but I believe that with your help, what I wish for shall come to pass. I just can't wait!
Respectfully,
Geoffrin
Second Letter
Dear Madame de Pompadour,
Do you know what's most valuable of all? Power. Chaos exists in every era, and confusion goes hand in hand with changes in society. One has to shine brightly amidst the fog. I believe that as long as we keep advancing resolutely, the people will stand with us one day, and the fog will disperse.
I pray for wisdom such as yours, to be able to see through all the traps in the fog. Heaven grant me a heart as brave as yours, so that I will not shrink away in fear; grant me a will as steadfast as yours, so that I will not doubt myself at any moment.
The time of the Enlightenment has come, and I believe that knowledge is our most powerful weapon. Perhaps all things new shall be doubted by the world at the very beginning, but I know that we shall open up a brand new realm, and this is our chance to re-mold the world. Let us stand together, and await the arrival of the light.
Loyally,
Geoffrin
Third Letter
Dear Pompadour,
I can't believe we've really made it! We have struggled and overcome numerous obstacles, and now the Encyclopédie has finally been published! Would I be able to achieve this if you weren't by my side from the start? Or perhaps it would have taken another five or ten years?
I have seen many unable to break the barriers that keep them trapped, merely due to a lack of knowledge, but now the Encyclopédie exists as the first step towards breaking those barriers! This is a decisive step for us, and also a decisive step in history. We will make a steady step forward, then another. We'll keep walking forward until we reach the horizon, where the sun shines bright!
Early next month, there will be a salon to celebrate the publication of the Encyclopédie. I have been busy with so many matters lately, but I've not felt even a touch of fatigue... Laugh at me all you want, but I'm still drowning in great joy! Dear Pompadour, I can't wait to share this joy with you. I cordially invite you to the salon. I will await your arrival with the most delicious refreshments.
Sincerely yours,
Geoffrin.

Trivia[]
Historical Trivia[]
- Madame Geoffrin's Relic, the Encyclopédie, was a general encyclopedia that was first published in France between 1751 and 1772. While it was not the first encyclopedia, it was best known for embodying the ideals of the Age of Enlightenment, notably through the organizing of its information based on human reason rather than theory, and encouraged people to think more liberally, to inform themselves and to know things.
