- On the eve of the college anniversary, I decorate the auditorium together with a male senior I have a crush on.
- Male Senior: Ha-yeon, why don't you wait for me here?
- Male Senior: These boxes of props are too heavy, so I'll move them to the auditorium one at a time.
- You: There's no need, senior. I can handle them by myself!
- Male Senior: Huh?
- I pick up a box and spread my feet to keep balance.
- You: Will you stack the other boxes on top?
- Male Senior: Are you sure?
- You: Yes, I can handle it.
- Male Senior: Oh, oh, okay...
- After a day of hard work, the decoration of the auditorium is nearing completion.
- I secretly watch my crush while I use an air pump to inflate the balloons.
- The letters stuck on the red velvet curtain are slightly crooked, and he carefully straightens them.
- You: (The first time I met him was the first day I attended college.)
- You: (Back then, I didn't know how to get to the dormitory. He patiently guided me and gave me a tour along the way.)
- Later on, I joined the student council and had more contact with him. Gradually, I was drawn to his good points and developed a liking for him.
- I take a glance at the bottled water in my hand.
- You: (No matter the outcome, I should be brave.)
- I gather up my courage and walk up to him. After twisting open the bottle cap, I hand him the water.
- You: Senior... I like you...
- He is stunned for a moment, then lowers his head apologetically.
- Male Senior: I'm sorry Ha-yeon... I like girls who depend upon me to open bottles for them...
- You: ...
- My mind goes blank and my hand unconsciously clenches. Water gushes out of the bottle and onto his sneakers...
- A sound wakes me up from my reverie.
- Kka-chi: Chak?
- Kka-chi: Chak chak?
- You: Oh hey, little bird... How did you find your way here?
- The magpie that often visits the restaurant is now standing on my open windowsill, looking at me.
- You: How did you find out where I live?
- Kka-chi: Chak chak chak!
- The magpie flies around my home, and comes to a stop next to my alarm clock.
- Kka-chi: Chak chak chak!
- The hands show it's ten past one.
- You: Ten past one?
- You: Oh no! I've overslept!
- After taking a taxi to the entrance of the park, I hurry to the meeting point.
- You: Sorry, sorry I'm late.
- I apologize while panting heavily.
- Lee Ha-jun: No need to run, we're not in a hurry.
- Lee Ha-jun: I bought you some coffee.
- You: Thank you, Ha-jun.
- I feel a bit nervous facing Ha-jun, and my breathing hasn't calmed down yet after running. As a result, I subconsciously apply too much force when I reach for the coffee.
- *pop*
- The lid pops off the squeezed cup, and coffee splashes onto Ha-jun's coat and hands.
- You: (Oh no, it's happening all over again...)
- You: How did that happen? I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to.
- I hastily take out a pack of tissues, and try to help Ha-jun get rid of the coffee stains, even though I know it can't be done.
- You: Oh no, oh no, what should we do...
- Lee Ha-jun: Ha-yeon.
- You: I'm sorry, I really didn't mean to...
- Lee Ha-jun: You don't need to apologize repeatedly.
- Lee Ha-jun: If your strength sometimes leads to minor accidents, you do not need to apologize repeatedly.
- I freeze in the middle of cleaning.
- Lee Ha-jun: Just like someone accidentally stepping on another person's foot, or accidentally knocking over a teacup.
- Lee Ha-jun: An apology is needed, but there's no need to keep apologizing.
- Lee Ha-jun: In contrast, a person who insists on being ill tempered over a minor accident...
- Lee Ha-jun: ...should be the one apologizing.
- You: (I was ostracised as a child because of my abnormal strength...)
- You: (When facing criticism from others, the first thing I do is apologize and explain that I didn't mean to, which has become a habit for me.)
- You: (Ha-jun is the first person outside of my family who thinks I don't need to apologize repeatedly...)
- Lee Ha-jun: Luckily, this cup of coffee hasn't been touched yet. You can have mine.
- I gratefully accept the other cup of coffee.
- The warm coffee with a nutty aroma flows down my throat, slowly calming me down.
- You: Thank you, Ha-jun.
- I take out the pen and notepad from my bag and casually draw a hen drinking beer.
- You: Here you go.
- Lee Ha-jun: What is this?
- You: With this picture drawn by the restaurant owner, you are entitled to a free fried chicken and beer on your next visit to Yummy Fried Chicken.
- Ha-jun smiles as if he thinks I'm being too childish.
- Lee Ha-jun: It seems you didn't read those comic books for nothing. You draw pretty well.
- Ha-jun folds the note in half and puts it in his coat pocket.
- Lee Ha-jun: How do we take the cable car?
- You: I like cable cars. Riding in a cable car and moving forward in the air makes me feel like a leisurely flying bird.
- Lee Ha-jun: Okay. Let's go take the cable car now.
- Ha-jun leads the way forward.
- You: Wait a moment, Ha-jun, it seems like you're going the wrong way.
- You: If I'm not mistaken, the cable car is on the east side of the park.
- Lee Ha-jun: There is also a cable car on the west side. I will take you there.
- I follow Ha-jun westward, arriving at a particularly quiet corner of the park.
- Looking up, I spot cables in the sky, and something dawns on me.
- You: Oh! This is where the old cable car station was.
- Lee Ha-jun: The earliest cable car in the park was located on the west side.
- Lee Ha-jun: After the new cable car on the east side was built, this place was gradually abandoned.
- You: What are we doing at the old cable car station, Ha-jun?
- He doesn't answer me. Instead, he raises his hand and taps lightly on a stone pillar that is carved like a magpie.
- *tap tap tap -- tap -- tap tap--*
- After the secret code has been tapped, I hear creaking sounds approaching.
- I can hardly believe it. A cable car is slowly coming towards us.
- You: Are my eyes playing tricks on me?
- I rub my eyes. The cable car does not disappear.
- You: How is this possible? Weren't the west cable cars abandoned?
- The cable car door opens, and it is about to arrive in front of us.
- Lee Ha-jun: Just go in. Don't worry.
- Ha-jun takes the lead and enters the cable car. Then he grabs my hand and pulls me in too.
- *click* The door closes.
- The cable car goes around the turning point, changes direction, and heads up the mountain.
- As the cable car rises, the flowers and trees in the park gradually shrink before my eyes.
- I gaze out at the blue sky. It feels surreal, as if I'm flying among the clouds.
- I blink hard, and conclude I'm not dreaming.
- You: This is truly unbelievable.
- You: How is this cable car operating, Ha-jun? I didn't see a single staff member on the platform.
- Lee Ha-jun: I will answer your questions later.
- Lee Ha-jun: You're in here now, and you can't just open the door and jump out, right?
- You: I would have to grow a pair of wings first.
- Ha-jun is so calm that I can't help trusting him.
- I relax, and sit down facing him.
- You: When I was a child and encountered unhappy situations, I always wished I could turn into a little bird.
- You: Just by flapping my wings, I'd be able to escape from anywhere full of troubles.
- Lee Ha-jun: Can I ask you a question, Ha-yeon? It might be a bit forward of me.
- You: What is it?
- Lee Ha-jun: This great strength that you possess... Did it trouble you a lot as you were growing up?
- I jump a little, and feel my face getting stiff.
- You: Well... I guess it did bother me quite a bit.
- You: Whenever I got emotional, I'd lose control of my strength.
- You: And then I'd accidentally damage things, or injure the people around me.
- You: For example, I ran to hug a classmate I hadn't seen in a long time. But I ended up giving her bruises...
- I gaze out at the clouds that seem just within reach, and mutter to myself.
- You: My presence always seemed to bring out accidents.
- You: The people around me both feared and hated me.
- You: So... they decided to isolate me...
- It's quiet within the cable car. Only the mechanical sound of gears running can be heard.
- Finally, Ha-jun speaks in a flat tone.
- Lee Ha-jun: Have you let go of the past?
- You: (Let go? That's easier said than done.)
- You: (And just like Seon-woo telling me he's fine...)
- You: (Faced with Ha-jun's question, I can only say...)
- You: Of course, I've let it go.
- You: The past seems rather childish now. It's just something you casually talk about over tea.
- I force a smile and chuckle lightly, trying to ease the tension.
- Ha-jun's expression grows complicated as he watches me.
- I'm familiar with this kind of look. It's the look my parents give me when I lie, and it's the same look I gave Seon-woo when he lied...
- However, Ha-jun does not push me further. He gestures with his hands.
- Lee Ha-jun: You can rely on your strength to do many things. In contrast, I cannot do a lot of things.
- The cable car reaches the top.
- After a brief pause, it comes to a stop at an open platform.
- Lee Ha-jun: We have arrived.
- I look out the window and see a tower next to the platform.
- You: Huh? So the abandoned cable car on the west side and the cable car on the east side both reach the TV tower at the top of the mountain?
- Lee Ha-jun: You will know once you go and check it out for yourself.
- Ha-jun opens the door, and I get off the cable car with him.
- On the north side of the platform, there is an iron gate that connects to the tower. The facade of the gate is decorated with iron artwork in the shape of magpies.
- Ha-jun leads the way with ease and opens the gate to the tower.
- I don't visit the TV tower often, but I'm pretty sure the interior is nothing like what I'm seeing right now.
- Hundreds or thousands of electronic screens cover the walls.
- Some of the screens are off, and others are lit.
- The lit screens display one face after another.
- It's just like an intelligence gathering post.
- You: Oh my goodness. Where am I?
