Letters[]

First Letter

Dear Minette,

I have always believed in your wisdom, just as I've always believed in your ability to forge through the darkness. Richelieu cannot be trusted, and I'm sure you know that well. Despite all our precautions, we may still find ourselves in a prickly situation. I pray that the sly fellow won't do anything to you, and if he does, I swear upon my honor that I'll have my revenge!

Listen, Minette, as long as we're together, we won't let the world ruin us. Richelieu might take advantage of your kindness and use you as a scapegoat. He thinks he's clever, but he doesn't know we can turn that on him instead. The earlier he shows his cards and his conditions, the easier it will be for us to suss out his plans and intentions. He won't bring us down! But keep in mind, Minette, that we're not up against any ordinary foe. So please be careful, and be brave!

Marie de' Medici

Second Letter

Dear Minette,

I hope you don't find me bothersome. How are you getting along with Leopold? The last time we met, he kept mentioning you, and I told him you like sweet desserts and tea. He doesn't seem to know a thing about you, but he cares for you a lot. To be honest, I didn't feel like being frank with him, until he convinced me with his sincere requests to meet you... And his paintings are so wonderful, aren't they?

Speaking of paintings, a few Dutch artists have arrived at Fontainebleau. They have toured the world outside France, and are fairly famous. The minute they arrived in France, they received quite a number of commissions from the royal family as well as the nobles. If they take on all of them, I'm certain they won't have any time to travel around France and paint the beautiful landscapes here. I suggest-- If you have the time, we could go view their paintings! If you like them, we could ask the artists out on a stroll. Think about it. It's been such a long time since we've spent time on the plains enjoying the scenery with talented artists, drinking tea and painting. The creative atmosphere combined with the fresh scent of grass, accompanied by conversations about Holland's latest art directions and philosophies… Won't that be fun?

Marie

Third Letter

To My Minette,

I was so moved when I heard you were searching for skilled doctors. I thought I wasn't afraid of pain, but when the suffering truly hit me, I discovered I'm capable of fear. Your courage has encouraged me to be braver, and now I no longer fear conspiracies and gossip. I am resolute, and shall fight against all slander. However... Sometimes, when the moonlight shines into my room, I kneel on the floor in repentance, and cry... I don't know how Louis is doing. He doesn't come to see me, but I don't blame him. I was too cold towards him in the past, and I shouldn't have treated him that way. I won't beg him to care for me, but I pray that he won't be deceived or harmed by villains. Please help me guide him, Minette. And if he ever realizes how much I care…

Please forgive me for making so many requests of you, Minette, Minny, I do wish to continue treatment. I do not fear death, but I fear dying in an undignified manner. So far, I have not yet lost my senses. Please do not worry about me. Ask after Louis for me.

Your dear Marie

Trivia[]

Historical Trivia[]

  • Historically, Marie de' Medici continued ruling as regent despite her son, Louis XIII, having reached maturity, and her mandate as regent having legally expired in the year 1614. This continued until the year 1617, where Louis XIII asserted his authority and exiled her to Blois. However, she escaped in the year 1619 and staged a revolt against her son.
    • Following her penultimate defeat in 1620, Marie de' Medici was eventually allowed to return to political power, largely with the help of Richelieu. However, they eventually became enemies due to the power struggle that persisted between them, and when Marie de' Medici's attempts to expel Richelieu were unsuccessful, she was ultimately banished from the country.

Game Trivia[]

  • Although Marie de' Medici's interaction quotes mention a salon, her part of the story did not exactly involve a salon. This may indicate that one of her quotes may have been accidentally swapped with that of Madame Geoffrin.
