Letters[]
First Letter
The lady I met at the auction
I understand your concerns. If a stranger were to shower so much attention on me, I would wonder about their motives as well. But I swear I mean you no harm. As for my motives... I guess I can tell you.
I am a traveling merchant, and I do business wherever I go. I saw you at the auction, and noticed how well-dressed and well-spoken you were. I thought perhaps I could do business with you.
A few short paragraphs on a piece of paper simply isn't enough for effective communication. Why don't we arrange a time to meet up and get to know one another?
An ardent wandering traveler
Second Letter
Dahlia
Few people would choose to become a traveling merchant. Most people can't stand the long periods of isolation and the many inconveniences on the road. I'm the same, but if staying in one place results in far greater trouble than leaving, leaving is the obvious choice.
Like everything else, the beginning is the most difficult. I ran into many problems, but quick hands and a calm head allowed me to complete my first step. I then discovered many unexpected benefits... It appears the path fate urged me upon is the best for me.
Perhaps you do not realize it, but the closer we get to Leto, the more anxious you become. I don't know what is troubling you, but I hope you've gained some motivation from your experiences. At least, I hope you'll be able to face the uncertainty of the future.
Olive
Third Letter
Dear Dahlia
You'll probably know my true identity by the time you receive this letter.
Back when I chose you, I acted to fulfill my selfish needs. But when I encountered you in this identity, it must have been fate. You met the truest version of me when I was at the most vulnerable and difficult point of my life, and we became acquaintances. The things that happened after were out of my control.
When I first saw you, I wondered what your reaction would be like when you knew the truth. Would you be angry with me? Would you think I was making a fool of you? At the time, I didn't really care. After all, you were just a pawn to me back then.
I was blinded by my own arrogance. The more I got to know you, the more afraid I became. I knew that a relationship built on lies and deceit could never last, but I... I wanted to keep you by my side.
Being honest is the only way I can beg for forgiveness. This time, we are equals, and I will leave the decision-making to you.
Seeking your forgiveness
Fort Hawke Correspondence Event
A Tavern at Dawn
What a coincidence! I was just about to write you a letter, and yours arrived in my hands first. Looking at that familiar handwriting, and the bouquet of dew-kissed flowers that came with it, I couldn't help but smile. You always have this way of appearing just when I miss you the most.
I've packed all my luggage onto the carriage, and now I'm sitting in the corner of a tavern in town, leaning over a wooden table to write you this letter. I know these descriptions are a bit trivial, but I just wanted to tell you. I'll set off as soon as I finish this letter.
Dahlia, do you remember I told you that the owner of this tavern made me wary when we first met? That old man with the ever-present smooth smile. I just found out that he was once a spirited winemaker in his youth. He only wanted to brew the best wine in the world, until his best work was poisoned, killing his best friend. It's a tragedy. I think he never dared to pour his heart into winemaking again, and that smooth, worldly smile is just a wall he built for himself. This story made me think a lot. Now, the wine he brews is a lot like him, good when you first taste it, but it always feels like something's missing. I bought a small bottle, and if you're interested, you're welcome to try it. I'd like to know if you feel the same way.
Thinking that we'll be seeing each other soon, my heart can't help but leap with joy. I hope I can reach your side faster than this letter.

Before the Story
Twenty-six years ago, Olive was born into the Langston dukedom as Cyrus Olive Langston. Very few knew her by her middle name, Olive, named after her mother who had passed on shortly after her birth. Investigations revealed that her mother had actually given birth to twins, but it is implied that the male twin died shortly after birth. Hence, in order to conceal the truth of her identity, it is likely that the word spread instead was that the baby girl was the one that passed on at birth. With her mother absent since birth and her father often stationed at the kingdom's borders, Olive's upbringing was mostly shrouded in loneliness and solitude.
Since women were not allowed to take up positions of power, much less that of the dukedom, Olive had to learn how to change her voice and get used to binding her chest, in order to live as Cyrus, the sole male heir of the Langston dukedom. In order to become the perfect duke, Olive had to suppress her desires and preferences, and had to hold herself back from expressing any interest in feminine clothing and cosmetics. As an army general, Olive also had to treat her wounds and injuries herself so her identity would not be exposed. Eventually, however, she managed to find an apothecary owner whom she could trust.
Upon first impressions, Olive appears to be a friendly and jovial individual, and has demonstrated to be a woman of many talents, as well as being rather knowledgeable, sociable and observant in her interactions with others. As Duke Cyrus, Olive is highly respected by the people, having dedicated her entire life to better the kingdom and the livelihoods of the people. However, Olive can also be shrewd and calculating, as seen when she immediately recognised Dahlia as her chosen duchess-to-be upon their first encounter in Sierce, and decided to get closer to her to further investigate her background and use her as a pawn for her own aims. Currently, Olive is one of the seven dukes of the Tara Kingdom, and has territorial control over the Northern Mountains, located a distance away from the Kingdom, where the largest mine in Tara is located. She also plays a large role in the planning of the city, being especially influential in the hotel, inn, and carriage industries.
Eight years ago, during the conflict between the Tara Kingdom and the neighboring Paquete Kingdom, Olive formally inherited the dukedom from her father, thus obtaining the title of Duke of Cyrus. She was able to secure victory for the Tara Kingdom swiftly, which earned her the King's praise, and likely the promotion to the position of the King's general as well. The two kingdoms decided to sign a truce, and peace allowed the Tara Kingdom to eventually recover and further develop. However, Olive eventually attracted the suspicions of one of her political enemies, Prince Victor, partly due to her having remained unmarried for a prolonged period of time as the Duke. To quell his suspicions, she arranged a marriage with a family that would be easy to manipulate for the sake of her narrative, eventually settling on the impoverished Joyce family. However, a month prior to the story, while seeking the King's approval for the engagement, Prince Victor had also convinced the King to dispatch her on an impossible mission to the Paquete Kingdom in order to sabotage her political position. While she managed to delay her departure for about a month to ensure that she was sufficiently prepared for the mission, Prince Victor sent assassins after her, thus forcing her to flee for her life. In order to hide from her assailants, she took up the alias of Olive, a name few to none knew her by, and disguised herself as a female traveling merchant.
Chapter 1
Olive first appears in 1-2 Stranded, where the MC (as Dahlia Joyce) bumps into her by accident at an auction during her stay in Sierce. During the auction, one of the items included was Cloud Smoke; a recipe that is still in its prototype stage, but can be controlled by the user at will, thus allowing them to create specific environments with ease. Despite Dahlia expressing her interest in the item, Olive -- who had been looking for ways to protect herself, especially after the events at the Northern Mountains -- would eventually outbid Dahlia no matter the cost, thus gaining ownership of the recipe.
Towards the end of the auction, when Aaron is revealed as the final item, the audience goes into a frenzy, and chaos ensues as he attempts to escape. If Dahlia decides to quell the crowd by accusing them of destroying an auction item, Olive attempts to stop her from going, telling her to not put herself in danger for a half-beast; though Dahlia will brush her off regardless, having prepared herself for this scenario. After the auction, Olive formally introduces herself to Dahlia as a travelling merchant, and accompanies her to complete their payments and claim their respective goods. When Aaron rejects Dahlia's kindness towards him, responding with hostility instead, Olive suggests using mandrakes to calm him down out of concern for Dahlia's safety, though Dahlia does not go through with it in the end.
In 1-7 Meetup, some time after the auction, Olive invites Dahlia out for a meal at Sierce's most famous tavern, and discuss the possible reasons behind the tavern's booming popularity. Olive suggests getting to know each other better by asking three questions, and upon hearing that Dahlia is headed to Leto, Olive suggests travelling together, as Leto is her homeland. However, she is turned down, as Dahlia reveals she is already travelling with someone else. In their conversation, Olive reveals that she has been working in her line of work for eight years, and has to operate with a man as the face of her "business", since most of society disapproves of the idea of a woman in a leading position. Although she claims that she's not cut out for her current line of work, she expresses her determination to achieve success as a woman, which impresses Dahlia. Before Dahlia could ask her third question, however, they are suddenly interrupted by intruders after Olive, presumably Prince Victor's men. While Olive manages to create an opening using her ring to distract the intruders for Dahlia to escape, Dahlia is pushed off the balcony by their assailants, spurring Olive to jump after her immediately.
They manage to make it out alive, but not without Olive suffering the brunt of the fall's impact in Dahlia's place, fracturing her right arm in the process. The two eventually made it to safety with Aaron's help, and Olive is brought to a physician to get her injuries treated. When Dahlia asks her the reason for saving her, Olive notes that despite her injuries, both of them still being alive makes it more worthwhile than just one person dying. She then apologises to Dahlia for implicating her and Aaron, simply explaining their assailants were enemies she had made during her numerous travels. Dahlia doesn't believe her, however, becoming aware that there is more than meets the eye, but decides to drop the matter in light of Olive's actions. Later, she makes use of her third question from earlier to invite Olive to set off to Leto together with them, to the latter's surprise and delight. During the trip to Port Luke, Olive gets to know Aaron better, and treats him like any other travelling companion soon after.
Upon reaching Port Luke, Olive expresses her desire to stay for a few more days with Dahlia. As Dahlia expresses her worries on her freedom after her marriage, Olive expresses her hope for Dahlia's future husband to be open-minded and kind, and that they can still meet even after her marriage. While sightseeing, the group discusses about the inventions of humans, and their impressive control over such huge devices over the years. Later at night, Olive is found watching the waters of the canal under the moonlight. She comments how time could stop in that moment, expressing her reluctance to return to Leto and resume her responsibilities as the Duke. When Dahlia notes how free Olive seems to be as compared to most women given her physical abilities and her background as a merchant, Olive replies that on the contrary, the current her is the closest she can ever be to her true self, and she can only be as such in this very moment, next to Dahlia.
The next morning, Olive declines Dahlia's invitation to go out for the day, claiming to have been unable to sleep the night before. However, unbeknownst to the others, Olive would later follow her secretly to Fort Hawke in order to distract her pursuers, which eventually caused the fort to come under attack. Upon discovering that the arrowheads used are the same ones used in the previous attack at the tavern, Dahlia and Aaron eventually grow increasingly suspicious of Olive's true identity. Back at the inn, when asked about her physical condition, Olive lies to Dahlia about having a chronic illness that triggers when she is exposed to new environments, when in fact she had been physically injured, which Dahlia and Aaron sees through. Soon after, Martha updates Dahlia of her findings from her investigations on Olive, including Olive's sapphire earring found in the wake of the attack at the fort in her letters, thus revealing her involvement in the earlier conflict at Fort Hawke. Dahlia returns her earring while bidding her goodbye, unable to trust Olive anymore at this point.
Despite the betrayal and falling out, however, Olive continues to tag along after the two on the trip to Leto for the next two weeks. Amidst heavy rainfall, the group manages to find shelter at a tavern, but is met with only a single room available. If Dahlia invites Olive to stay in her room for the night, Olive expresses her desire to rekindle her friendship with Dahlia, while expressing her inability to tell Dahlia the truth, and that she would be better off knowing less about her. Despite knowing that her own presence brings about danger, Olive eventually admits that she's unable to stand being away from Dahlia, though Dahlia does not reciprocate in kind.
The next morning, Olive surprises the duo by settling in their carriage ahead of them. She tells Dahlia how their encounter has enlightened her on a desire to live life the way she wants, and briefly laments about how life might have been like if she was born in a different family, free of expectations and responsibilities. After managing to persuade Dahlia to let her travel with them for the rest of the trip, Olive becomes much happier and light-hearted in their company. While in Leto, Dahlia becomes increasingly aware of the inevitable marriage that awaits her, and Olive attempts to cheer her up, remaining hopeful that Dahlia's fiance might be different from her expectations of him. In the process, Olive mysteriously hints at how Dahlia's struggles may eventually turn to opportunities, to the latter's confusion. Soon after, Olive leaves the group without notifying anyone, intending to resume her original duties as Duke Cyrus and see through the wedding process.
If Dahlia turns Winni down in 1-14 Rendezvous while looking for shops to expand Fort Hawke's reach, she and Martha will bump into Olive at the apothecary, who is waiting to get her injury treated in 1-16 Coincidental Meeting. Olive attempts to hide her injury from Dahlia, but Dahlia eventually helps Olive back to the apothecary nevertheless. Olive notes that Dahlia still cares about her, despite the suspicions and the truths that could not be told. Back at the apothecary, as her wound is being examined, Olive insists that she got it from a fall despite the severity of her injury, and the apothecary owner's strange acceptance of it raises the suspicion of Dahlia and Martha. Later, aware that Dahlia is keeping an eye out on their actions from outside, the apothecary owner manages to help Olive escape from the premises, and in turn, from Dahlia.
With the help of further investigations, Dahlia and Martha eventually manage to draw a connection between Olive and the Duke, but it isn't until later do they come to a more concise conclusion about Olive's true identity.
Chapter 2
For most of Chapter 2, Olive returns to her original role as Duke Cyrus, who has returned from his expedition in the Northern Mountains and is due to marry his fiancé, Dahlia Joyce. Yet, despite having initially gotten close to Dahlia under the pretense of friendship, it becomes evident that Olive does, in fact, actually cherish the relationship that they had fostered in the past month, and that Olive has grown to see her as more than just a pawn for her own ambitions.
Her true identity is eventually discovered by Dahlia, who has gathered and pieced together information from numerous investigations and their time together travelling. Feeling genuinely remorseful for having deceived Dahlia the entire time, she comes clean to Dahlia, hoping to seek her forgiveness. However, angry from being deceived, Dahlia threatens to kill Olive - but because she still cares for Olive, she cannot bring herself to actually hurt her. Contrary to Dahlia's expectations, Olive does not resist her hold at all, instead pleading to the other to listen to her side of the story at the very least. Yet, as their relationship was built upon lies and falsehoods, Dahlia coldly accuses Olive of still lying and trying to manipulate her even now by trying to make her sympathetic. Olive then asks her what if she wishes to make this falsehood become reality, which shocks Dahlia enough to to finally let go. She takes advantage of this confusion and disarms Dahlia with ease, advising her to not hesitate and be as soft-hearted as she was in the face of danger.
As the tension dissipates, Dahlia reminisces about their traveling days in Sierce, and they eventually talk about the problems in their society, including the discrimination of half-beasts. Olive laments about the need for bloodshed for the sake of peace, and her inability to achieve her dreams for the kingdom despite being in power. She expresses her determination to fulfil three wishes; for the Tara Kingdom to no longer be under the control of the Paquete Kingdom, for everyone to live in harmony regardless of race and gender, and finally, to be able to live as she truly is, so that her achievements can be rightfully recognised as a woman. Now aware of the responsibilities and burdens Olive has to bear as the Duke, Dahlia expresses her support, and with all remaining doubts cleared, they return on good terms once more. They discuss about the tavern attack back at Sierce, and with the arrowhead found from the previous attack at Port Luke, they eventually manage to deduce Prince Victor as a potential culprit. To quell his suspicions, Olive requests Dahlia to proceed with the wedding, albeit only in name. Despite her lingering hesitation, she eventually relents, to which Olive express her heartfelt gratitude.
Soon after, they receive news that Prince Victor would be personally visiting the Duke's residence to attend the wedding. Worried about any potential attacks, Dahlia goes to visit Olive, asking if she has any other proof that points towards Prince Victor's culpability. She confirms this with newly found evidence, but she still lacks substance to convince the King. To allay any further suspicions of their wedding, Olive suggests Dahlia move in to the Duke's residence for the time being. Unfortunately, Prince Victor arrives earlier than expected, leaving them with not much time to prepare for his arrival. Still, Dahlia and Olive manage to put up the impression of an engaged couple deeply in love, which allows the conversation between the three to go relatively smoothly, until Prince Victor brings up the topic of the King's assignment. Before he leaves, he warns Olive to not betray the King's trust in him, and orders them to hold the wedding as soon as possible, for he would be escorting them back to the capital afterwards. Later, Olive explains the reasons behind Prince Victor's accusations of her supposed "deserting" and her assignment to negotiate with the Paquete Kingdom, recounting the events that led up to their very first meeting in Sierce. As Olive reaffirms her vow to never keep the truth from Dahlia again, Dahlia expresses her empathy and understanding of the situation, to which Olive comments how it's been a long time since Dahlia was concerned about her.
While preparing for the wedding, Olive opens up to Dahlia about her life growing up as the Duke, having led a mostly lonely childhood prior to the inheritance. On the wedding day, Olive and Dahlia notice Aaron's presence in the premises. Olive notes that Aaron's hostility towards her indicates that he is still unaware of her identity, which means Dahlia has not disclosed her secret to anyone else. As a sign of gratitude, and in light of Aaron's loyalty towards Dahlia, Olive gives her one last chance to turn back, fully prepared to shoulder the consequences regardless of her choice. However, Dahlia chooses to go through with the wedding regardless. After the wedding, Olive comments on how two women being able to marry and get congratulated is like a dream, and vows that if their ruse was ever uncovered, she would ensure Dahlia's safety before she can be fully implicated in the fall of the Olive family. She confesses to Dahlia that even though the wedding might just be a sham to her, she has never taken anything even more seriously.
In 2-10 Mission, Prince Victor takes them back to the capital soon after as promised. At night, Olive attempts to calm Dahlia's nerves, vouching that the King is genuinely a good king at heart, only being wary of her due to her family's strong military background. In light of the king's nature, she assures that Prince Victor will not act rashly unless he has convincing evidence on hand. While Olive has prepared for the worst, Dahlia suggests that there may be proof of Prince Victor's scheming that they can use to turn the tides in their favour instead. Both of them ponder on how they could succeed in the negotiations, with Olive noting the Paquete Kingdom having the upper hand in every aspect. Being noticeably troubled, she is then comforted by Dahlia, who encourages her to take the leap and go for broke, especially since they have nothing else to lose against the Paquete King.
The next morning, in King Thala's presence, Olive makes three requests for the mission as discussed with Dahlia; temporary authority to dispatch the minerals from the Northern Mountain mines to use as part of the Tara Kingdom's resources for the trade, explicitly allow her wife to accompany her on this trip, and a third final request to grant upon her successful return from Paquete. Noticing the King's displeasure at the ambiguity of the third, Olive demonstrates her reverence for the King's benevolence, and readily offers her life as a sign of loyalty to the kingdom. The King eventually agrees to Olive's requests, on the condition that should she return unsuccessful, the noble prestige of the Langston family, including Dahlia, will be stripped completely. Olive silently expresses her guilt for implicating Dahlia in the consequences, but Dahlia, resolved on helping Olive till the end, reassures her. Resolute, Olive agrees to the King's conditions, and the two are given three days to set off to Paquete.
However, on the way there, they discover Aaron had followed Dahlia onto the ship as well, and Olive's real identity is discerned by Aaron almost immediately. Aware of the dangers once they are on Paquete ground, Olive allows Aaron to come along to ensure Dahlia's safety. Noticing Aaron's distress, she eventually confirms Aaron's suspicions on her identity herself, clarifying that their marriage is one of convenience so as to assure him - although said with some reservation. Now aware of the truth, Aaron promises to protect both Dahlia and as Olive's secret. Upon reaching Paquete, however, as the King had no intention of negotiating with them, their audience with the King is continuously delayed, much to their chagrin. Eventually, they decide to take the initiative and come up with a ploy to attract the attention of the King.
Thankfully, their plan is met with success, and they are soon summoned to meet King Paquete. Instead of the palace, however, the trio are brought to the palace hunting grounds instead. There, they discover that the King has captured Winni, an orphan half-beast that Dahlia and Aaron had adopted back in Leto. Together with Winni, Olive and Aaron are then made to participate in a hunting game, where they would attempt to help Winni survive. However, when Aaron's half-beast features are revealed in the process, King Paquete, realising his identity, calls off the hunt prematurely, and finally invites the group to a banquet at the palace. However, even though Olive offers up the entirety of the Northern Mine as leverage, King Paquete demands for Aaron as the price for their alliance. Aware of how important Aaron is to Dahlia, Olive refuses King Paquete's proposal, which provokes his anger, revealing that he had no intention to negotiate to begin with, as well as Prince Victor's collusion with him. The trio are then surrounded by troops, and Olive hurriedly hands her rings to Dahlia while ordering Aaron to get Dahlia to safety. While holding off the soldiers, Olive is captured in the process, and is sentenced to death along with the rest of the captives from Fort Hawke in three days.
Later, it is revealed that Olive had actually carved the recipe of an explosive substance (most likely Cloud Smoke) onto the rings, thus giving Dahlia and Aaron the perfect opportunity to create a distraction to save the imprisoned half-beasts by destroying the Paquete cargo ships. This incident would also make the Paquete King realise the stakes at hand with the sheer firepower available at the Tara Kingdom's disposal, thus making him finally accept Olive's negotiation terms. Olive is later freed along with the other captives, and eventually reunites with Dahlia and Aaron at the envoy farewell. Relieved that Dahlia is unharmed, she thanks Aaron for protecting Dahlia, but is met with hostility instead, as Aaron reminds her that an imposter will always be an imposter.
Back at the Tara Kingdom, the trio are invited to a banquet at the palace to celebrate their triumphant return. As Cyrus recounts the events that happened at the Paquete Kingdom, she offers up a letter sent to King Paquete by Prince Victor, together with the previously found arrowhead, exposing him as the traitor in front of the King. Prince Victor is subsequently convicted and taken away. In the final chapter, 2-19 Celebration, following the main events of the story, Olive returns to her female appearance, and asks Dahlia once more about her future plans as herself, rather than as Duke Cyrus.
In the "Deceased Duchess" and "Duke's Façade" endings, Olive is unable to fulfil her third wish of being recognised as a woman, and is made to remain as Duke Cyrus in the eyes of the public.
- In the "Deceased Duchess" ending, Dahlia refuses to give up her freedom for Olive, despite having been through thick and thin with her. Olive notes how soft-hearted Dahlia is, going so far as saying how she's fully capable of getting Dahlia to stay if she wanted to, but will not do so. She then orders Dahlia to leave before they reach Leto, and covers up her disappearance as a tragic untimely death, and vowing to never marry again as the Duke. After everything has settled, Olive appears once more as Duke Cyrus at the very end where she visits Dahlia, who is now free and back at Fort Hawke.
- In the "Duke's Façade" ending, Dahlia recalls how Olive had mostly lived a life filled with solitude and fear, which renews her resolve to stick by Olive. While Olive is delighted by Dahlia's decision, she expresses her regret over not being able to annul their marriage as promised, as well as her fear over Dahlia regretting her choice. Dahlia then reassures her that they can find new dreams to pursue, which makes Olive look forward to their future.
In the "Hope Restored" ending, Olive's accomplishments as a woman are recognised, and she becomes the first female Grand Duke of the Tara Kingdom. Later that night, Olive gives Dahlia a final chance to back out, but Dahlia reaffirms her desire to stay by Olive without hesitation, recounting the adventures they had together and expressing her anticipation for the future. Delighted, Olive expresses her contentment at her companionship, and excitedly starts planning their itinerary for the remaining ten days of their return trip to Leto together with Dahlia.
Upon returning to Leto, Olive is initially worried about her people's reactions to her identity reveal, having lied to them for years. However, her worries are soon unfounded, as she later finds out that women, inspired by her feats as the Duke, have become much more empowered. In light of the changes in society, Olive promises to do her best to remain worthy in the eyes of the people. With her marriage to Dahlia officially annulled, they are now free to go their separate ways. Despite this, Dahlia decides to stay by Olive's side nevertheless.
