  • At dawn, Gabrielle hurriedly wakes me. She is very worried. Something has happened.
  • Gabrielle: Your Majesty, the King wishes to see you.
  • You: So suddenly? Is something wrong?
  • Gabrielle: Something to do with a necklace...
  • I remember Bohmer's necklace. Why would that come up?
  • Beautiful things attract disaster... I feel a sense of foreboding. Gabrielle's face goes pale. She just remembered the same thing.
  • Gabrielle: Do you think it's that necklace? I'm worried, Marie.
  • You: I refused to buy that necklace, so there shouldn't be a problem. Don't worry.
  • You: (It's only been a few days. How did the King hear of this?)
  • You: There's no point speculating. I'll hurry to the King's side. I shouldn't make him wait.
  • You: I should change into something presentable first.

  • Gabrielle: You look so elegant and formal in this outfit. It's perfect.
  • Gabrielle: No matter what the issue may be, I'm sure His Majesty's mood will improve upon seeing you.
  • You: Thank you for worrying about me, Gabrielle. Let's go.

  • The King, Madame Adelaide, and Lafayette are in the study, looking grave. The atmosphere is so tense I can hardly breathe.
  • Gabrielle is terrified. I squeeze her hand to comfort her, then step forward and curtsy to the King.
  • You: Greetings, Your Majesty. May I know why you've sent for me?
  • Louis XVI: I hear you've purchased an... extremely expensive item.
  • The King sounds hesitant and thoughtful. He seems unsure of what to say. There is a sudden cold chuckle...
  • Adelaide: Why are you hesitant, Your Majesty?
  • Adelaide: I remind the Queen that my father commissioned the necklace for Madame du Barry, and now you've decided to purchase it for yourself.
  • Adelaide: 1,600,000 livres! That's equivalent to years of palace expenses. You certainly have no problem pampering yourself, Your Majesty!
  • You: I didn't buy that necklace. This must be a misunderstanding.
  • Adelaide: Oh? Then why did Bohmer say you did? Would a commoner dare to frame the Queen? And what about the gossip? How do you explain that?
  • You: Gossip? What gossip?
  • The King tries to speak, but only sighs. After some thought, Lafayette breaks the silence.
  • Lafayette: Your Majesty, the people say you disregarded the state of the royal treasury and amassed huge debts to buy it.
  • Lafayette: The news has spread quite rapidly. If you've truly put the palace in debt, your reputation, as well as the royal reputation, will not recover quickly.
  • Lafayette: We want to hear the truth from you, before we decide how to handle this matter.
  • You: My words and deeds have always been the subject of gossip, but even a visit from a merchant can result in vile talk...
  • You: I swear by my dearest mother that I did not purchase that necklace! Your Majesty, please believe me.

  • Everyone is staring at me...
  • Gabrielle's worry, the King's doubt, Lafayette's thoughtfulness, Adelaide's scorn... I see them all.

If you choose Fersen in 1-4 Victorious Return, Gabrielle will defend you

  • The room is deathly quiet. As I'm about to despair and give up on defending myself, Gabrielle speaks up.
  • Gabrielle: Her Majesty didn't buy the necklace. I swear!
  • She clenches her fists, as though she's trying to keep herself from trembling. Her voice is gentle as usual, but I detect resolve in her tone.
  • Adelaide: Duchess Polignac, everyone in the palace knows you're her closest friend. How do you expect me to believe you?
  • Gabrielle: I mean... I was there when Bohmer presented the necklace.
  • Gabrielle: I swear by my family name... The Queen rejected him!
  • Adelaide: Once the royal family's reputation is destroyed, even if you were to sacrifice your entire family, it would accomplish nothing.
  • Gabrielle: I...
  • You: I know my previous actions have given people cause to doubt me...
  • You: But Gabrielle has done nothing wrong. She has a heart of gold. Don't hurt her!
  • Everyone stares at me again in astonishment. Lafayette steps forward...
  • Lafayette: No matter the Queen's past deeds, we should find the truth regarding this matter.
  • Louis XVI: Of course... Do go on, Lafayette.
  • Lafayette: Now that the gossip has spread, lying would only make it worse. I'm sure the Queen understands this.
  • Lafayette: Therefore, I think the Queen would be honest about whether or not she bought the necklace.
  • Lafayette: I choose to believe her.
  • Gabrielle and Lafayette's words seem to have reassured the King.
  • Now is the time. I must defend myself, and offer a way to gain back my people's trust.

If you choose Lafayette and Reply playfully in 1-4 Victorious Return, Lafayette will defend you

  • The room is deathly quiet. As I'm about to despair and give up on defending myself, Lafayette speaks up.
  • Lafayette: I believe the Queen.
  • His voice lights up my lonely heart. His trusting gaze is strangely reassuring.
  • Lafayette: Whatever else she may have done, she has always admitted her indiscretions.
  • Adelaide: Marquis de Lafayette, you've always disapproved of her. Why are you defending her now?
  • Adelaide: Oh, that's right... You danced with the Queen last night at the banquet. Were you seduced by her charms after just one dance?
  • Adelaide: Yes, that must be it.
  • Lafayette: Madame, take care with your words. We are in the presence of the King.
  • Adelaide gives a little "humph", and frowns at the King, who remains silent. She assumes the King won't rebuke her, so she continues haughtily.
  • Adelaide: How could you possibly compare what she's done in the past to this? She is quite simply lying because of how severe this situation is compared to her past indiscretions.
  • Lafayette: Trust is built upon honestly, Madame. And the Queen has always been honest.
  • Lafayette: I used to believe the rumours. It gave me a wrong impression of the Queen.
  • Lafayette: But after talking to her yesterday, I realise how wrong I've been.
  • Lafayette: I'm sure she knows lying about this matter would do her no good right now.
  • Lafayette's gaze is full of sincerity. Just like he said last night, his doubt about me are gone.
  • I must defend myself, make amends, and find a way to gain my people's trust!

Maintain Innocence and Offer a Donation

  • You: I'm ashamed of the things I've done before, and I don't want to make any more mistakes.
  • You: The necklace is indeed gorgeous, but I know its price is equivalent to years of palace expenses.
  • You: I was tempted, I admit, but I'm aware of my duty to the kingdom as Queen. I would never make such a frivolous purchase!
  • You: If you still refuse to believe me... there is nothing more I can say.
  • Adelaide: Hmph. Your Majesty cannot--
  • Louis XVI: Enough. The Queen has spoken and I have no reason to doubt her.
  • Louis XVI: I shouldn't have accused you without proof. This must be distressing for you, Marie.

  • You: Thank you for trusting me, Your Majesty.
  • Louis XVI: I am glad you are thinking of the royal family's welfare, and that you are becoming more queenly.
  • Louis XVI: As for the people's mistaken view on this matter... I will find a way to stop the rumours and clear your name.
  • Gabrielle: Thank you, Your Majesty. I am glad you believe me.
  • Adelaide: Perhaps that merchant tried to trick us, and spread the rumours to tarnish the Queen's reputation. He must be punished, Your Majesty!
  • Louis XVI: I will find the truth. Lafayette, please handle the investigation.
  • Lafayette: Yes, Your Majesty. I will do my best.
  • Louis XVI: However, I cannot guarantee the people will believe these are the rumours with no basis in fact.
  • Adelaide: The Queen is always buying jewelry, so it's no surprise this happened.
  • Adelaide's attacking me again. I want to reply, but the King clears his throat.
  • Louis XVI: Aunt, please give us some privacy so we may solve the issue at hand.
  • Adelaide: If that is your wish, Your Majesty.
  • Adelaide curtsies, then turns to give me a smirk that sends a chill down my spine. Did she have something to do with this?
  • But she's right. The real Marie did all those things. Now I am the Queen, and a Queen has a duty to her people.
  • You: (What can I do to win the people's trust? I must prove that I am a good Queen.)
  • While I'm deep in thought, the sparkle of the King's crest catches my eye.
  • You: (Oh, I know!)
  • You: Your Majesty, I'm willing to donate my jewellery to replenish our military funds, or to help the poor... Whatever might help solve the problem.
  • Everyone stares at me in disbelief.
  • Louis XVI: Yes, that may appease our subjects... Lafayette, what do you think?
  • Lafayette: Our ultimate goal is to change the people's impression of the royal household. I approve, and have nothing but the deepest respect for the Queen's determination and her change in attitude.
  • Louis XVI: The royal household and the people of France will appreciate the Queen's gesture.
  • You: Your Majesty, it is only right for me to make amends for my past mistakes. I only hope it's not too late...
  • Louis XVI: You can use the money to help the people or purchase a ship for the navy. I think both options are equally good.
  • Louis XVI: Marie, which do you choose?

Help the People

  • You: The people are unhappy with the royal family, so let's appease them.
  • You: There are plenty who are cold and hungry because they cannot afford bread and firewood.
  • You: I shall use the jewellery to help the poor, and solve the problem at its root.
  • Louis XVI: You care for them a great deal. I am very proud of you, my Queen.
  • Louis XVI: I will distribute the funds in your name. This will surely change the people's opinion of you.
  • You: My reputation isn't what's important. The people's support for the royal family is.

Purchase a Ship

  • You: I would like to use the money to purchase a ship. If we gain glory for France, I'm sure the people will support the royal family!
  • Louis XVI: Yes, buying a warship will add to our military might, the country's reputation, and add some glory to your name.
  • Louis XVI: My Queen, in light of your contribution, I shall name the warship "Marie". What do you think?
  • You: If it pleases Your Majesty, please do! I would be honoured to have a warship named after me.

Only Maintain Innocence

  • You: (I could donate "my" possessions to save my reputation, but will I look guilty if I do that?)
  • You: (I won't admit to doing anything I didn't do.)
  • Louis XVI: This must be distressing for you, Marie.

  • I return to my room, but I'm feeling restless from the morning's upheaval.
  • I keep thinking about a painting I saw in a book, of Marie Antoinette being taken to her execution. I feel things won't be resolved so easily.
  • You: Perhaps I should confront Bohmer and find out why he said I purchased the necklace.
  • Gabrielle: It's probably just a misunderstanding. It can't be that serious... right?
  • You: Maybe I'm overthinking this, though I'm sure Lafayette would agree I should consider everything.
  • You: Gabrielle, let's go right away!
