- Determined to get to the bottom of things, I send for the carriage so as to leave the palace in secret with Gabrielle.
- You: All right, now I just have to disguise myself.
- You: I need something that I can move freely in and that isn't too flashy. Can you help me?
- Gabrielle: Of course.
- I step into Bohmer's shop. Once he sees me, he hurries over and respectfully escorts me to the VIP room.
- Bohmer: Your Majesty, what an honour to have you in my humble shop! What may I do for you today?
- You: I guess you've heard the rumours that I purchased Du Barry's necklace... Even though I'm very sure I rejected your offer that day.
- Bohmer: But Madame Adelaide sent word that you'd changed your mind...
- Gabrielle: Madame Adelaide... She was behind this!
- You: Bohmer, what did she say to you?
- Bohmer is silent. He seems to have realised how grave the matter is.
- Gabrielle: Bohmer, answer Her Majesty's question!
- Bohmer: Yes, yes! Madame told me that you liked the necklace a lot.
- Bohmer: But she said you were worried that if you agreed to purchase it on the spot, the King would find out. So you rejected it.
- Bohmer: She said you would definitely come back to my shop, so...
- You: Even if I had purchased it, why would there be rumours?
- You: These rumours have spread across the land, and they've damaged my reputation!
- Bohmer: Your Majesty, those rumours have nothing to do with me, I swear! Merchants like me have to keep our dealings a secret! We never talk about our clients!
- Gabrielle: Are you sure? If you dare lie to the Queen, you know the consequences!
- Bohmer: Of course! I speak nothing but the truth!
- Gabrielle and I share a knowing glance. We think Bohmer's telling the truth, but without any proof, I can't do anything about Adelaide.
- She's insulted Gabrielle in front of me, and now this... I don't understand why she's attacking me.
- You: Gabrielle, have I ever offended Madame Adelaide? Why doesn't she like me?
- Gabrielle: No, you haven't. It's not your fault, Marie.
- Gabrielle gives Bohmer a warning look, and then says in hushed tones...
- Gabrielle: I think this has something to do with the previous King. His Majesty used to spend a lot on Madame Pompadour and Madame du Barry.
- Gabrielle: When Madame Adelaide and the other two madames reached marriageable age, the royal family could no longer afford their dowry. Whenever you bought jewellery, she would tell the King you were wasting money.
- You: I get it now.
- The Du Barry necklace must hold powerful memories for Adelaide, and I've become a convenient target for her to vent on.
- If I were Marie, I might be able to brush this incident off after I calmed down. But I'm not Marie...
- You: (If I don't do anything about this, the consequences could be dire. Not only would my life be at stake, but the lives of the people I care about as well.)
- Gabrielle: Marie, what should we do? Should we report this to the King?
- You: No, we've done all we can, and this matter should blow over.
- You: However, since the King has already sent men to clear my name, I think...
- Well, the rumours do mention Bohmer, so he should be key to solving the issue.
- You: Bohmer, if the rumours do not die down, and continue eroding the people's trust in the royal family, I hope you can help clear my name.
- Bohmer: Of course! If that is your wish, your Majesty, I would be glad to help.
- Bohmer: Your Majesty, please accept this as an apology...
- I don't want anything from him, but I also don't want him to misunderstand... so I'll just have to accept this gift.
- You: Gabrielle, let's go.
- Gabrielle: Okay. Bohmer, remember the Queen's words.
- I wasn't expecting this, but at least things haven't gotten any worse. As I turn to leave Bohmer's waiting room...
- Jeanne: Oh, I'm truly sorry, your Majesty... Madame.
- Gabrielle: Thank goodness my friend's all right. Watch where you're going.
- Jeanne: My apologies, I should be more careful. I'm Jeanne de Valois. Mademoiselles, if you're in the middle of a shopping trip, I'd be glad to help.
- Jeanne: I know the shops around here quite well, and would like to be your guide. To apologise for crashing into you. I'll make sure you get the best buys here.
- Her gaze is fixed on me. Despite her friendly smile, I can't help feeling a shiver down my spine.
- You: Um... No, there's no need for that, thank you. I'm a little tired. Maybe another day.
- Jeanne: Oh, tired already? All right. But please do allow me to help next time.
- Gabrielle: Marie, I'm glad you didn't say yes...
- Gabrielle: That lady is from an aristocratic family, but nobody knows anything about her, except that she's apparently done terrible things in the past. It's best not to associate with her.
- I'm glad I relied on my intuition. I can't afford to get caught up in any more trouble, so it's best to be careful.
- As I'm about to get back into the carriage, someone I never expected to see appeared at the door of the jewellery shop...
- ???: Y-your Majesty? I'm so glad to see you here!
- ???: Your Majesty, greetings... I hope you'll give me a chance to explain.
- You: There's no need.
- The words slipped out of my mouth, and I'm startled by how cold I sound.
- You: (What's wrong with me? Oh... It must be Marie speaking!)
- The person in front of me is none other than Cardinal Louis Rohan. He's been trying to get into Marie's good books lately, so he keeps fawning at her.
- But in the past, he spread rumours about Queen Theresa in public... so Marie hates him.
- Rohan: Your Majesty, I know you're angry with me, but it really was just a misunderstanding. Please give me a chance!
Reproach Him and Leave
- Perhaps the current rumours are no longer accurate, but if he never did such a thing, why would he try so hard?
- You: (And he's probably here because he's thinking of buying jewellery to appease me. I've never accepted any of his gifts!)
- You: (Why did he insult my mother if he's so desperate to remain in my good books?)
- Look at how eager he is to please, I can't help but rage further.
- You: You dared to spread insults about my mother, and yet you expect me to believe that they're simply "rumours"?
- Rohan: I'm really sorry, your Majesty. I was young and foolish, and made a mistake!
- Rohan: I'm willing to make amends for whatever harm I've done. Please forgive me!
- You: By buying my favour with jewellery? I will never accept bribery from someone who has insulted my mother!
- A storm of emotions is churning within me. I feel as though I'm under someone else's control.
- Rohan: Your Majesty... Please give me a chance to make amends on behalf on Queen Theresa's love for God.
- Gabrielle: Marie, I know you're angry... But please spare a thought for your health.
- You: You're right, Gabrielle...
- I take a few deeps breaths, and force "myself" to calm down. Once I've regained my composure, I look at Rohan again.
- You: My mother is a devout Catholic. For her sake, I shall return from rebuking you further.
- You: However, this does not mean that I've forgiven you. Remember your position as Cardinal, and make sure you do not do any other improper things.
- I flick Rohan a displeased glance, and then pull Gabrielle towards the carriage.
- Just as I'm getting into the carriage, I happen to see that strange woman - Jeanne de Valois - walking towards him. I instantly get a bad feeling, but I can't explain why.
- Gabrielle: Are you all right? Your face is pale...
- You: Maybe I'm just a bit tired out from dealing with all of this. Don't worry about me, Gabrielle. Let's go back and rest.
- I've only been here for a few days, and so much has happened. It all makes me so tense and nervous.
- I try my best to sweep it all to the back of my head, close my eyes, and lulled by the swaying of the carriage, I sink into a deep sleep...
Leave Without Saying a Word
- Perhaps the current rumours are no longer accurate, but if he never did such a thing, why would he try so hard?
- You: (And he's probably here because he's thinking of buying jewellery to appease me. I've never accepted any of his gifts!)
- You: (Why did he insult my mother if he's so desperate to remain in my good books?)
- I really wish I could yell at him more, but I should be careful about what I do now, and try my best not to draw more attention...
- Just as I'm wondering what to say to Rohan, Gabrielle gently tugs on my sleeve. I realise what she's suggesting, and I nod at her.
- Gabrielle: Cardinal Rohan, the Queen is a little tired. I'm afraid you'll have to continue this conversation on another day.
- You: Gabrielle, let's go.
- Rohan: Your Majesty...
- I flick Rohan a displeased glance, and then pull Gabrielle towards the carriage.
- Just as I'm getting into the carriage, I happen to see that strange woman - Jeanne de Valois - walking towards him. I instantly get a bad feeling, but I can't explain why.
- Maybe too much has been going on lately, and I'm getting a bit paranoid. I push everything to the back of my mind, and the swaying of the carriage lulls me to sleep...
