  • Louis XVI: People of France, I invite you to calm down and listen to what I have to say, from the depths of my heart.
  • Some people are still agitated, but most of them have quietened down, and are all focusing on the King.
  • Though they seem to have calmed down, I still feel ill at ease, as though this is simply the calm before a storm.
  • Louis XVI: Ever since I became King, no matter how hard I tried, no one seems to have been satisfied with my performance.
  • Louis XVI: I may have failed as King, and failed as a son and a husband... I didn't even manage to be myself.
  • Louis XVI: To prove my worth, I chose to support the American Revolutionary War, so that I could have my name carved in history, and let the world know of France.
  • Louis XVI: The success of the war has led to freedom for the Americans... And this is precisely the freedom that you all desire.
  • Louis XVI: Actually, upon the suggestions of the Queen and Lafayette, we began discussions on this very topic a few days ago.
  • Louis XVI: The House of Bourbon is several centuries old, and it's difficult to make a decision...
  • Louis XVI: But last night, we finally decided to let France embrace liberalism, and become one of the most progressive countries in Europe.
  • The people start talking excitedly as though they've just heard something unbelievable. Apart from some exclamations praising the royal court...the majority seem to be dubious and suspicious
  • Sunlight reflects off metal in the crowd -- there are numerous guns all aimed at the King.
  • The King's gaze roams slowly over the crowd. He seems to have noticed the same thing, but he remains as calm as ever.
  • Louis XVI: Unfortunately, this is happening as you all point your weapons at me...
  • Louis XVI: And perhaps you will assume that the royal court has announced that we've already made this decision simply because we are bowing under pressure.
  • Louis XVI: But I swear upon my name, and I promise you that...
  • Louis XVI: I may be weak, and I may not be your ideal King, but I have never spoken a lie.
  • Louis XVI: And so, I hereby announce the results of the conference --
  • Louis XVI: We accept the concept of human rights and the rights of citizenship, and will arrange for a bill hearing directly, so that you will obtain the freedom you so desire.
  • Joyous cheers as well as dissatisfied sounds of doubt echo about Versailles, and the King suddenly looks directly at a group of gun-wielding people whose faces are filled with hatred.
  • I expected to see disappointment in him, or roars of rage... But the corners of his mouth turn up instead to form a carefree smile.
  • Louis XVI: Whether you believe it or not, and whether you're satisfied with the result or not...I have already done my best. I have not failed my ancestors, and I can live with myself now.
  • Louis XVI: Shoot me then! If you hate me so much, shoot me!
  • Louis XVI: If that would assuage your hatred; if my blood can make this country better, do not hesitate!
  • There is a momentary silence.
  • The King's sudden actions have unsettled many people, and some even start fighting among themselves.
  • Young Man: Everyone put down your weapons! Have we misunderstood the King...? If you harm him, we might lose a great ruler!
  • Woman: Is he saying the truth? Can we believe him? Someone tell me!
  • Man: Don't get tricked! Before we achieve freedom for real, everything he says could be lies!
  • Man: What about the Queen? We want to know what the Queen thinks!
  • Like a bomb, the mention of me has attracted everyone's attention, and fanned the flames of their fury.
  • The King and Fersen both look at me, and their eyes are full of worry and concern. I'm sure they'll both jump to my defense if I were to ask for their help.
  • You: (But I must not rely on anyone for this... I must do this myself.)
  • Amidst the commotion, I step forward, and proudly survey the people below.
  • You: Before I speak my mind, I would like to ask you a question... Who am I to you?
  • You: Marie Antoinette? No.
  • You: An Austrian princess? The Queen of France? No to both.
  • You: These are...all me, but also not me.
  • You: You all wish to see me behave like the mother of a nation, without speaking loudly, nor laughing loudly...without living for my own sake.
  • You: Every sentence I utter must show concern for the people, and every cent must be spent for the people's sake, and every single thing I do must be for the benefit of the country and its citizens.
  • You: I have made mistakes, and I am working hard to make amends...
  • You: I thank all those who are willing to believe in me, and also thank those who still hate me, for they have made me realize something at last.
  • You: In France, what you need isn't an Angel that will save your country, but a demon that you can vent your feelings on.
  • You: What you want isn't me, and it isn't a capable Queen. What you want is a saint who will never do any wrong.
  • You: Regrettably...I cannot be that.
  • Astonishment, dissatisfaction, unhappiness... All sorts of expressions directed towards me, some with evil intent, and others with reassuring kindness...
  • It should be overwhelmingly pressurizing, but instead, I felt incredibly relaxed.
  • You: You may have the right to decide whether we live or die, but we also have the right to choose how we die.
  • You: Whether you're willing to accept it or not... Right now, I just want to be myself.
  • You: I'm not anyone else; I am me!
  • Amidst all the noise, I think I hear the King and Fersen from behind me...
  • Louis XVI: God is with me, and I am with you.
  • Fersen: God is with me, and I am with you for all of eternity.
  • I close my eyes and await whatever judgement fate has in store for us.

  • It's quiet all around, as though all the commotion and everything that has happened were merely part of a nightmare and no longer exist.
  • After I know not how long, I hear the sound of horse's hooves approaching.

  • Knights are making their way through the crowd and they bear the flag of France.
  • Once the people recognize who the leader is, they burst into cheers.
  • That proud figure atop the horse is none other than Lafayette, who has been touring the streets with the people.
  • He dismounts elegantly, and in front of everyone's eyes, kneels to the King and I. His upturned face is full of respect.
  • Lafayette: I represent the people of France in their acceptance of the King and Queen's decision to institute a constitutional monarchy.
  • Lafayette: I am grateful to God for giving us such a wise King, and for letting France move towards a more liberal future.
  • Lafayette: I believe that with the help of the royal court, not only will we establish human rights for all, but the people will also get to rule themselves, and everyone will be able to lead better lives.
  • Lafayette: I, Lafayette, hereby announce that I am sworn to France, and am loyal to the House of Bourbon!
  • With his greeting, the murderous atmosphere seems to have vanished, and all the hatred and misunderstanding are gone with the wind.
  • Sensing the change in the crowd, Lafayette lets out a sign of relief, and gives us a subtle, bitter smile.
  • Just as I'm wondering what to do so as not to waste Lafayette's efforts, I suddenly hear the sound of people kneeling behind me.
  • Fersen: God bless the King! God bless the Queen! God bless France!
  • People: God bless the King! God bless the Queen! God bless France!
  • The people's cheers echo throughout the palace. Their faces are filled with joy, as though they have only just savored the taste of true victory.
  • Once everyone has calmed down, Lafayette gets up to bow to us again...
  • For some reason, I feel as though the gesture isn't filled with respect this time, but rather of suppressed apology.
  • Lafayette: And I represent the people once more, in addressing the King and Queen.
  • Lafayette: In order to allow the people to grow ever closer to the new royal court, and to do away with all the misunderstandings brought about the gulf that has existed in between...
  • Lafayette: We invite the King and Queen to return to Paris, and move into the Tuileries Palace.
  • Louis XVI: ...
  • Fersen: Tuileries Palace used to be a royal residence as well, but it's already lain in ruins for more than a century...it's probably not in a suitable a state to live in.
  • Louis XVI: Do we even have a choice?
  • Fersen: ...Well, you're right about that.
  • Louis XVI: Since the people wish it to be so, and I have no reason to reject... It'll probably give me some quiet time to myself.
  • Louis XVI: But you will all have to suffer, Marie, Fersen...
  • You: Your Majesty, if you don't think it's an inconvenience, there's no reason for me to have any complaints, right?
  • Fersen: Right! As for me...
  • Fersen: A knight need only serve by his master's side. A knight is a knight no matter where he is. Isn't that so?
  • Louis XVI: Thank you... Let's do this then.
  • Louis XVI: Men! Prepare to move into Tuileries Palace!
  • Everyone starts cheering at the tops of their voices, and we quietly stand where we are, calmly accepting this harsh and cold reality.
  • There's no feeling of victory, nor is it a failure. Everything just seems so natural...
  • As though no matter what we could have done, the tide of time would have led us to this step.

  • After deciding to move into the Tuileries Palace, we start packing our necessities... Honestly speaking, there isn't much we can bring with us.
  • Besides the basic clothing and daily necessities we require to maintain our royal appearances, nearly all the luxurious gowns and jewelry have to be left behind in Versailles.
  • You: (Those things never belonged to me anyway... And right now, I don't need them either.)
  • Everything has been prepared.
  • You: (Let's change into light and comfy clothing, and get ready to leave Versailles.)

  • I stand at the stairway, quietly surveying the Palace of Versailles.
  • Though I've not been here for long, but I've somehow ended up thinking of this place as home.
  • You: (...I wonder if I'll ever return some day?)
  • Louis XVI: Marie, it's time to go.
  • Louis XVI: Lafayette and the people are waiting for us at the gate.
  • You: All right, but... I don't seem to see Madame Adelaide anywhere?
  • Adelaide: Don't mind me. You can all go.
  • You: Are...are you planning to stay here?
  • Adelaide: What's wrong with that?
  • Adelaide: This is the Palace of Versailles that Roi Soleil built. It's where I was born, where I grew up, and where I will grow old.
  • Adelaide: Forgive me, but I definitely will not allow myself to live like a pauper in those ruins.
  • Her expression and attitude remain just as arrogant as that of a peacock, and you can't find a trace of defeat in her.
  • You: So even if you risk running into danger here, you're not willing to leave?
  • Adelaide: Your Majesty, do you think a princess of France would be afraid of death?
  • Adelaide: I am a mighty daughter of Bien-Aimé and of France. I would die for glory.
  • Her resolve and her courage, all that pride simply oozing out of her very pores...have stunned me.
  • I've never liked this arrogant woman...but right this moment, I can't help but feel some respect for her.

Ask the King to let her stay

  • You: Your Majesty, Madame Adelaide seems resolved to stay. Please let her fulfil her wish.
  • Adelaide: Well I must reject your good will, your Majesty. I do not need your sympathy, and I do not need you to ask the King on my behalf.
  • Adelaide: No one can change my mind, not even the King... Not even Auguste can.
  • Louis XVI: Even if I order you as the King of France?
  • Adelaide: If you insist, then please declare me a rebel and execute me!
  • Adelaide: To die in Versailles, and at the hands of my nephew... I'd have no regrets.
  • A faint smile appears on her face...so faint it's nearly unnoticeable. It seems satisfied, and blissful...
  • The King and I exchange glances, and see nothing but respect in each other's eyes.
  • Louis XVI: I understand. Then stay here in peace. I will let it be known that no one is to disturb you.

Express my respect for her

  • I slowly give her a solemn curtsy, much to her surprise.
  • Adelaide: Your Majesty, you are the Queen, and you have no need to curtsy to me.
  • You: I am merely expressing my respect for the great daughter of Bien-Aimé and of France.
  • You: Not as the Queen, but as myself. I respect you.
  • She stares at me wordlessly for a while, and then a faint smile appears on her face, so faint that it's nearly unnoticeable.
  • Adelaide: Is that so? Then I accept.
  • This is the first time I've ever seen her smile. It seems just as arrogant and rude as she usually is...but it makes me happy.
  • Louis XVI: Since you seem so bent on the idea, Aunt, I won't force you.
  • Louis XVI: I shall let it be known that no one is to disturb you. You can stay here in peace.

  • Adelaide: Thank you for your understanding, your Majesty.
  • Adelaide: Count Fersen, please do your duty and protect the King and Queen.
  • Fersen: Yes, of course.
  • Fersen: I express my utmost respect to you, Madame Adelaide. Please take care of yourself.
  • Louis XVI: Aunt... May you be well.
  • Adelaide: Your Majesty, please remember to uphold your beliefs, and forever do your royal blood proud.
  • Adelaide: One day, you will raise the royal court up again and regain all the glory of Roi Soleil.
  • She gazes at the King gently, as though she's trying to carve his image into her mind.
  • After looking at him for a long while, she suddenly turns towards me as though she's just thought of something.
  • Adelaide: Oh yes, your Majesty.
  • Adelaide: The words you said on the balcony...are sufficient for the dignity of one of royal blood.
  • Adelaide: I guess I can accept you as my niece.
  • She gives me a faint smile, and without waiting for my reply, she turns and leaves.
  • Adelaide: Farewell, Auguste.
  • I watch her walk away, and a sudden impression springs to mind...
  • It's as though she is no longer just a princess, but a Queen looking down upon the entire world.
