Mary Read is an English pirate and The Heartbreaker's First Mate, who used to be a soldier and a member of the navy. From childhood, she lived much of her life dressed as a male, "Mark Read". She has a sharp tongue and wit, and has the street smarts and life experience that Cordelia lacks. A tragedy in her past leaves her searching for a new place to belong. Her biggest fear is being left alone.
Read is a The Perfect Storm Companion.

Letters[]
First Letter
Captain,
I've attached a report on the crew... our "Heartbreakers". Looking at this sorry lot is enough to make even my steely heart crack in two. To call them the very dregs of "The Drunken Mermaid's" patrons is an understatement. They are misfits rejected by every other Captain.
Heartbreaker Status Report:
Sleepy Godric, our lookout and sail master, has a penchant for napping... which he insists gives him great eyesight.
Bang and Burns, are our twin gunners and the youngest of the crew. They had to leave their old jobs as demolitionists for causing some rather spectacular pyrotechnic disasters.
Walrus Pete is the ship's cook and the worst chef in England. That's all I have to say about him. Your stomach will tell you the rest.
Lucky Sidney is our carpenter and shipwright. He claims he's lucky because he has survived 13 shipwrecks. But as to why so many ships he's been on sink, it's a mystery.
Moondog is our battle musician. She plays so poorly that dogs howl when she makes a tune.
Eric Keats, our know-it-all scientist and navigator, whose arrogance and belligerence know no bounds.
At the moment, every day our ship doesn't blow up and we don't sail straight into an island feels like a miracle granted by Poseidon's mercy. Let's just say, we have a while to go before we’re ready to battle Davy Jones…
I'll do my best.
First Mate Read, of a ship of hopeless misfits
Second Letter
Dear Captain,
Heartbreaker Status Report:
So, the Heartbreakers aren't at the bottom of the sea... yet. Neither are we shark food after a battle, or imprisoned after being caught by the pirate hunters.
We've lasted longer than anyone suspected. We've even had a couple of not immodest piratical successes. Now, I'm not going to say I am hopeful. It's far too early for that. Poseidon knows, the world is cruel, and the sea is a cruel and changeable mistress. and probability, I have seen some glimpses of piratical skill in our adorable bunch of misfits. But, let's just say that I am not in total despair anymore. Along the way, against all the odds, flying in the face or all reason.
Now don't get too happy! I can picture that dreamy smile on your face as you read this, and clutch your heart as you swell with pride and emotion. I can't understate how precarious this all is! Everything could fall apart within a single heartbeat.
But, on the other hand, good job Captain.
There may be hope for us Heartbreakers yet.
First Mate Read, of a vaguely passable pirate crew
Third Letter
Dearest Captain,
What a voyage we've had.
Crew Status Report:
For this report, I wanted to not focus on our crew of Heartbreakers, but instead do my report on our beating heart: our Captain. I want to report on you.
People go to sea for many reasons. It's a drastic thing, to leave behind your old life and everything you know, for the unknown horizon. You wanted to be reborn... to put to rest Lady Cordelia, and be reborn as Captain Delamare. Well, you've done it. As your First Mate, who has been with you for every step of the way, for every fight, every disappointment, every change of the tide, every misstep and every victory... you've really done it. You're a real pirate captain! We've achieved piratical successes and notoriety beyond even our wildest dreams.
You've grown so much. I guess we've grown together. And healed together. And been reborn together. I needed this voyage more than anyone.
When I was drowning in sorrow, our hopeless crew of misfits gave me a purpose. And here we are now... legendary First Mate Read and Captain Cordelia Delamare of The Heartbreaker.
I guess the only question is: where do we sail next?

The following segments detail Read's story throughout The Perfect Storm. This section is nothing but spoilers. Read at your own risk.
Before the Story
Prior to Read's birth, her mother was married to a sailor who frequently went on voyages, as well as a son. However, her husband was out at sea for over a year at the time of Read's conceiving -- in his absence, Read's mother had an extramarital affair and became pregnant with Read. Thus, Read's existence was kept a shameful secret, for it would expose her mother's infidelity and ruin what was left of her life. Shortly after Read's birth, however, her son passed away, and her husband never returned from his last voyage. In order to ensure that she would continue receiving financial aid from her late husband's family, she dressed Read up as a male and posed her as her deceased son, Mark Read, thus also hiding the truth of Read's birth in the process. From there on, Read would live her life as Mark Read, while the existence of Mary Read was only privy to few, only switching between names whenever convenient.
After finishing her education, Read worked as a foot-boy, and later found employment on a ship, where she presumably worked as part of the navy. When war broke out later, she managed to join the military, where the British forces were allied with the Dutch. There, the battlefield would be the place where she proved her strengths in fighting and soldiering, and also where she met Dutch soldier Finn, whom she eventually fell in love with and married later in life. However, less than a year after their marriage, Finn was shot by the hands of a navy officer, and his murder was covered up as an accidental gun discharge.
The death of the only person who accepted her for who she was caused Read to harbor animosity towards the navy, despite having served them before. Overwhelmed with grief and anguish, Read deserted the military, and having lost her way after years of being at the service of others, she decided to waste the rest of her life away at England's worst tavern, The Drunken Mermaid, for the days to come, all while maintaining her male disguise.

Trivia[]
Historical Trivia[]
- Unlike her game counterpart, Read and her husband sought to be discharged after their marriage. During this time, Mary dressed as a woman, and the couple used their military commission and marital gifts to acquire an inn, which they ran until her husband's early death.
- Following her widowhood, Read resumed her male disguise, and returned military service in the Netherlands after her husband's death, before quitting and boarding a ship bound for the West Indies. Her ship was subsequently plundered by pirates, who took Read in as part of their crew. They returned to honest lives after accepting a pardon from the king.
- In 1720 she met Jack Rackham and joined his crew, dressing as a man alongside Anne Bonny. She, together with Anne Bonny, would become two of the most famous female figures of piracy in history.
- Interestingly, their meeting was after Charles Vane was voted out of command of his own crew in favour of Rackham.

Game Trivia[]
- Read is able to speak Dutch, having picked it up from her time in the military.
