  • A few days have passed, and I experience no other symptoms. But I'm still feeling uneasy.
  • The night of the full moon is near, and I must consult Doctor Grey soon.

  • Aunt Petit has been staying home for several days, compiling a new book.
  • Today, I hear she's going out with Mr. Erskine. This is my chance.
  • Anna: Miss Rayes, are you feeling unwell?
  • Realizing that I've been staying in bed past breakfast, Anna is worried, and has come to check on me.
  • You: I'm feeling really dizzy. I think I might be ill...
  • I clutch my blanket tightly, and cough a few times.
  • Anna: I'll ask Doctor Hoffmann to come over. He is Madam's most trusted doctor.
  • You: No, Anna... I want to go consult Doctor Grey. Do you know where his clinic is?
  • Anna: Doctor Edward Grey? I can go ask around. Please rest.
  • You: Thank you, Anna.

  • After breakfast, Anna brings me news.
  • Anna: Miss Rayes, I got Jack to ask Doctor Grey to come over, but unfortunately, the doctor has gone out.
  • You: Doctor Grey's not in? Oh no...
  • Anna: There was a note on the door. It says that Doctor Grey will be visiting the orphanage at Whitechapel today.
  • Anna: Why don't we ask Doctor Hoffmann instead?
  • You: I'm not comfortable with the idea of getting examined by unfamiliar doctors...
  • Anna: Since I'm not seriously ill, why don't you let Jack send me to the orphanage?
  • Anna: Whitechapel is a messy place, and I'm afraid you won't be safe...
  • You: I'm only going to the orphanage, and I'll be back after consulting him. I won't run about.
  • You: I'll be with the children, and Doctor Grey will be there too. I'll be fine.
  • Anna: Well... All right.
  • You: Oh yes, please prepare some snacks for the children.
  • Unable to dissuade me, Anna can only do as I say.
  • You: (I should change into something suitable for visiting the slums.)

  • Jack: Miss Rayes, are you sure you don't need me to wait for you?
  • You: There's no need. Besides consulting Doctor Grey, there's something I need to discuss with him.
  • The words sound wrong the minute they're out of my mouth. Jack smiles at me knowingly.
  • Jack: I see. So that's how it is. I understand!
  • Jack: Stay for as long as you like. I'll help you keep this a secret from Madam.
  • You: Please do so.
  • If I were to try to explain further, it would be even more awkward. So I watch Jack drive the carriage away, and then walk into the orphanage alone.

  • I don't get to use my carefully prepared excuse. The minute I mention Doctor Grey's name, the receptionist lets me in.

  • Edward Grey: Miss Rayes? Why are you here?
  • You: Good afternoon, Doctor Grey.
  • You: Do pardon me for intruding, but I need your help.
  • You: May I have some of your time after you are done with the consultations?
  • Edward Grey: No need to be so formal. I've already seen my last patient.
  • Edward Grey: If you don't mind, we can talk right now.
  • The little boy sitting at the side of the table stands up, and politely bows to me before running out of the room.
  • You: He has a bandage on his hand. Is he badly hurt?
  • Edward Grey: Not really. If he lets it rest for about half a month, he should be able to move it normally again.
  • Edward Grey: But it must be torture to watch your friends run about and play when you can't join in.
  • Doctor Grey shakes his head with a smile, and pulls out a chair for me.
  • Edward Grey: Back to our previous topic... You must be here because of an urgent matter, right?
  • You: Some days ago, I drank a sort of medicine, and it gave me some strange symptoms.
  • You: The symptoms disappeared the next day, but I'm still afraid, so I decided to come consult you...
  • Edward Grey: Do you remember the name of that medicine?
  • You: It was given by a friend, and she told me it's for boosting my health. I don't know what it's called...
  • Edward Grey: Well then, what symptoms did you experience?
  • You: Anxiety, overheating, nightmares, and... a bizarre thirst for blood.
  • Doctor Grey is shocked for a moment. Then he frowns deeply.
  • Edward Grey: That "health booster" probably isn't from any official doctor or pharmacy.
  • Edward Grey: Please allow me to conduct a simple examination of your body, just to be safe.
  • You: Alright.
  • Doctor Grey takes out a stethoscope, and motions for me to turn around.
  • Perhaps I'm feeling too nervous. My heart is racing, and my cheeks are heating up.
  • After he's done with the stethoscope, Doctor Grey checks behind my ears and my neck, and then examines my eyes.
  • Edward Grey: There's nothing wrong with your body. Your face is pale, but I guess that's due to exhaustion and worry.
  • Edward Grey: As for the "thirst for blood" you mentioned, it might be a side effect of your fear of the disease.
  • You: Is that so?
  • Edward Grey: The symptoms of the people infected by the disease are far worse than the ones you experienced.
  • Edward Grey: Their bodies decay, and they die within a few days... All of them, without exception.
  • I'm still feeling dubious, but I don't dare to reveal anything about the Scarlet Rose Club.
  • Doctor Grey seems to have read my mind.
  • Edward Grey: Do you mind telling me who gave you that medicine, Miss Rayes?
  • You: It's...
  • Edward Grey: Was it Jesse?
  • You: No, of course not!
  • Edward Grey: I'm not sure if you've heard, but some young nobles have joined a secret organization.
  • Edward Grey: Whether the organization's motive is profit or chaos, it has definitely attracted the attention of the ton.
  • Edward Grey: And despite Mr. Lindvall's repeated warnings, Jesse is still curious about this club.
  • Edward Grey: If you were influenced by him, Miss Rayes--
  • You: You've misunderstood. Jesse doesn't know a thing about this medicine!
  • I didn't expect Doctor Grey to be aware of the existence of the Scarlet Rose Club. I am momentarily tempted to tell him.

Tell him the truth

  • I want to clear his suspicions about Jesse. After some internal conflict, I decide to tell Doctor Grey about how I joined the club.
  • Edward Grey: You are too reckless, Miss Rayes.
  • Edward Grey: You could have lost your life, investigating a shady organization on your own.
  • Edward Grey: You're lucky to be here in one piece. Don't go to them again.
  • You: But the Baroness said that once I've drunk the "prayer water", I'm connected to the "High God's" blood.
  • You: And no matter where I am, the "High God" will be able to sense the existence of its followers, and no one can escape.
  • Edward Grey: Most of that is probably made up to frighten you.
  • Edward Grey: Such scare tactics are typical of how underground organizations control people.
  • You: The full moon ritual is probably an evil scheme.
  • You: Even if I am somehow spared, what will happen to the members that are devoted to the Baroness?

Say something vague

  • You: The medicine was given to me by someone I know from etiquette class. You don't know her.
  • Ashamed, I hang my head. I am unable to meet Doctor Grey's eyes.
  • Edward Grey: Your friend must be a member of that mysterious organization.
  • Edward Grey: The medicine she gave you might have some hallucinogenic properties, as well as addictive components.
  • Edward Grey: There are many similar drugs on the black market. Crooks often use them to control people.
  • Edward Grey: Please stay away from this friend of yours, Miss Rayes.
  • You: But what if she was tricked by someone, and ended up joining that organization...
  • You: I can't just watch her head towards destruction, and not do a thing!
  • Edward Grey: An organization that can gather numerous young nobles, make them keep everything a secret, and do dangerous things--
  • Edward Grey: I'm afraid there might be an unimaginable power behind it. Trying to tackle them alone would be like trying to mine ore with a spoon.
  • Edward Grey: Since the ton are concerned about the matter, I'm sure Scotland Yard has already started investigating.
  • Edward Grey: Instead of tossing yourself into the flames, why don't you wait calmly for the right moment?
  • You: Hmm... I guess you're right.
  • You: (Doctor Grey isn't involved in this, after all.)
  • You: (And maybe his logical nature makes it hard for him to truly understand my predicament...)
  • Perhaps he's noticed my woeful expression. Doctor Grey's tone seems to grow gentler.
  • Edward Grey: I know you've been highly concerned about the epidemic, Miss Rayes.
  • Edward Grey: And I guess that is how you became involved with this underground organization.
  • Edward Grey: But it's the job of the police to investigate criminal activity. And the treatment and prevention of diseases should be left to doctors.
  • Edward Grey: What you should do, is ensure your own safety, and have faith in justice.
  • You: I understand, and thank you for your concern, Doctor Grey.
  • Edward Grey: I am going to the Lindvall residence, and I can send you back.
  • Edward Grey: Please wait a while. I'll go say goodbye to the children.
  • You: Oh yes, I brought some snacks for them. Please distribute them.
  • I hand over the basket of snacks.
  • Edward Grey: Since you were kind enough to think of this, why don't you distribute them together with me?
  • Edward Grey: I'm sure the kids would rather see a friendly lady instead of a doctor who keeps nagging them to take their medicine.
  • You: Alright, I'll be glad to help.

  • On the way home, I gaze out the window at the gray and foggy streets. My thoughts are a mess.
  • Doctor Grey seems dispirited at my distracted state, and remains silent for the whole trip.
