  • Vincent rushes through the woods with me in his arms.
  • I curl up in his embrace, watching the trees fly past. The wind is howling in my ears.
  • You: You... You're a vampire?
  • Vincent Savile: Yes. Are you scared?
  • You: I'm not scared, because you saved me.
  • Vincent Savile: Don't force it. Your terror is written all over your face.
  • You: No, I believe you. If you meant to hurt me, you could have done so many times.
  • You: But you haven't, and you keep warning me and helping me...
  • Vincent Savile: Caroline, even if I haven't harmed you, you shouldn't treat vampires as kind benefactors.
  • Vincent Savile: If you manage to escape, you must forget everything that happened tonight.
  • You: My friend... Priscilla is still in the cemetery! If I don't go rescue her, the Baroness will...
  • Vincent Savile: You should worry about yourself first. You're the Baroness' target.
  • Vincent Savile: She's going to catch up with us, and as for the others--
  • Vincent suddenly comes to a stop. He looks around him warily.
  • A flowing river blocks our way.
  • The trees are sparse along the river, and under the terrifying full moon, there appears to be nowhere to hide.
  • Vincent looks tired. He hides his fangs and pointed ears, and the red fades away from his eyes, turning him back to the Vincent I know.
  • You: Are you alright?
  • Vincent Savile: I'm fine, don't worry.
  • Vincent Savile: We can't stay here for long. We must return to the city quickly...
  • Mysterious Baroness: Hahaha, do you think you have what it takes to escape me?
  • The sinister cackling is drawing nearer. The Baroness appears on the riverbank with a whoosh.
  • Mysterious Baroness: Oliver, you traitor! How dare you meddle again after 13 years!
  • You: Oliver?
  • I look up at Vincent. He swallows a few times, and then averts his gaze.
  • Mysterious Baroness: Oh? So you hide behind a false name and pretend to be human. Do you think that will erase all of the past, and disguise your true nature?
  • Vincent Savile: I don't know what you want with this child, but I won't let you get your way.
  • Mysterious Baroness: Haha, what bold words. Has the weak and helpless Oliver finally discarded his chains?
  • Vincent Savile: Nonsense. I'll never go against my principles, and I won't team up with you lot.
  • Mysterious Baroness: 13 years of hide and seek, and you still haven't learned to accept reality.
  • Mysterious Baroness: You possess immortality, and yet you are in love with frivolous human things.
  • Mysterious Baroness: You've suppressed your powers for so long, and drink the blood of drowned creatures for sustenance. Do you really think you're my match?
  • Vincent Savile: We'll see!
  • Mysterious Baroness: Hmph! What arrogance! I'll get rid of you for the Elder!
  • There's a sudden pitter-pattering of feet in the woods.
  • A few pale-faced people emerge from the trees, swaying from side to side as they approach us.
  • You: They're club members who took part in the ritual!
  • You: But there's something very wrong with them...
  • These nobles have no expressions on their faces, and there's no sign of life in their eyes. Fresh blood glistens on their necks.
  • Vincent Savile: They have been turned.
  • Vincent Savile: They're not human anymore, but they're not vampires either. These are just walking corpses.
  • The "walking corpses" mumble unintelligible things as they lurch towards us with bared teeth and clawed hands.
  • Vincent Savile: Caroline, get behind me!
  • Vincent Savile: I'll eliminate them before they are completely transformed!
  • Vincent lets out a low whistle, and the crows waiting in the trees take flight in response.
  • I'm completely shielded. All I can see are flashes of images. The cawing of the crows and the roaring of strangers mix together.
  • I can't tell what Vincent is doing, but I can sense him trembling, like a man grasping at his last straw.
  • Mysterious Baroness: Oliver, your resistance is futile.
  • Mysterious Baroness: This girl is the perfect vessel. I just need to offer her to the Elder, and the Blood Clan shall be revived!
  • You: (Vessel? Elder? What is she saying...)
  • Vincent Savile: You wish!
  • Vincent staggers back a few steps. Those two words seem to have taken everything out of him.
  • You: (Vincent can't hold on any longer...)
  • The crows caw endlessly, and there are black feathers flying all around me, tinged with specks of blood.
  • You: (I'm the Baroness' target, and Vincent should be able to escape without me.)
  • I don't want Vincent to get hurt any further, and I subconsciously let go of his hand.
  • Vincent Savile: Caroline, don't let go, hold onto me!
  • I shake my head, clench my teeth, and shove Vincent away.
  • Vincent Savile: What are you doing?! Come back!
  • The crows are still hiding me from view, and I dash madly into the woods without answering him.

  • I know I can't return to the cemetery, so I head even deeper into the woods.

  • The trees here are huge, and the dense undergrowth reaches up to my waist.
  • You: (I'm making too much noise, and the undergrowth is slowing me down.)
  • You: (If the Baroness comes after me, she'll spot me instantly, and it won't be easy to run away...)
  • I decide to hide behind a large tree.
  • I'm still panting when I hear the Baroness' cold cackle.
  • Mysterious Baroness: Why are you running, foolish girl?
  • I hold my breath, try my best to calm down, and attempt to determine the exact location of the voice.
  • Mysterious Baroness: As the Elder's vessel, you shall have the most ancient, noble blood coursing through your veins, and gain eternal power.
  • Mysterious Baroness: You only need to give up your worthless human soul in return.
  • You: (Why is she so fixated on me...)
  • The footsteps grow nearer, and I look anxiously at the tall shrubs around me, afraid to move.
  • Mysterious Baroness: Heh heh, stop hiding. You can't escape. I've already dealt with Oliver.
  • You: (No, no way! She's just trying to provoke me into showing myself! Calm down...)
  • I cover my nose and mouth, but the more I try to hide my breathing, the harsher it gets, and the harder it is to control.
  • My heart's about to burst out of my chest, and I wonder if the Baroness can hear it beating.
  • You: (What do I do? Do I just wait for death...?)
  • The Baroness' footsteps suddenly vanish, and the woods become eerily silent.
  • You: (Why can't I hear anything?)
  • The silence continues. I hear nothing apart from the desolate howling of the wind and the hooting of a far-off owl.
  • You: (Has the Baroness left?)
  • My legs are numb from tension. I lean on the trunk for support as I stand up, and stagger a little, accidentally stepping on a dry twig.
  • You: Ah!
  • I cry out in terror. A pair of hands grab hold of my neck almost instantly.
  • Mysterious Baroness: I said you can't possibly escape me. Why waste all that effort?
  • You: Let... me go!
  • I struggle with all my might, but those withered hands are as chilly and immovable as stone. I can hardly breathe.

  • You: Aren't you... going to use me as a vessel?
  • Her fingers keep tightening, and I squeeze out the words with difficulty--
  • You: You... can't kill me now!
  • Mysterious Baroness: Hahaha, don't worry, my little lamb. I won't kill you.
  • Mysterious Baroness: But I should take some precautions first, to prevent more hiccups.
  • The Baroness stares at me with bloodred eyes and cackles sinisterly, revealing sharp fangs--
  • A gun shot startles the birds in the trees, and the hands around my throat loose their grip.
  • You: (What happened?!)
  • The Baroness freezes, and her body starts to fall backwards.
  • Mysterious Baroness: The hunt...
  • She falls to the ground, black smoke rising from her chest, silenced forever.
  • Her face is frozen in shock, her pale skin wrinkles and quickly turns green.
  • You: (Is she... dead?)
  • When the black smoke fades away, the Baroness has been reduced to a pile of decaying bones.
  • I'm scared speechless, and do not notice the steady footsteps approaching me.
  • ???: I'm sorry I'm late.
  • A familiar low voice sounds in my ear.
  • I lift my head in a daze and see Doctor Grey holding a silver revolver. Its barrel is still smoking.
  • Edward Grey: Don't be afraid, Miss Rayes, it's me.
  • Edward Grey: She's dead, and won't hurt you again.
  • The sight of Doctor Grey fills me with relief, and tears come spilling out of my eyes.
  • You: I thought... I was going to die...
  • Edward Grey: You shouldn't have attended the ritual.
  • You: I was overconfident and thought I could handle it.
  • Edward Grey: Even if you had some secret reason for putting yourself in danger, you shouldn't be so reckless.
  • Edward Grey: You almost became vampire prey.
  • You: Doctor Grey, how did you end up here?
  • You: And your gun... Why can it kill vampires?
  • Edward Grey: I noticed the existence of this club, because Jesse talked about a missing friend.
  • Edward Grey: As for this gun, it was left to me by my foster father. I've kept it by my side ever since he passed away.
  • Edward Grey: He told me that the gun uses special silver bullets that can kill vampires.
  • Edward Grey: I never thought it'd come in handy today.
  • You: So... You've known about the vampires all along?
  • Edward Grey: I do know a bit more about them than the average person, thanks to my foster father.
  • Edward Grey: I'm sorry for lying to you before.
  • Edward Grey: Not many know that vampires exist, and I promised my foster father to keep it a secret.
  • Edward Grey: And I don't want innocent people to wander into danger out of curiosity.
  • Vincent Savile: Caroline!
  • A panicked cry can be heard from behind the trees. Overjoyed, I look in that direction to see Vincent walking slowly out of the shadows.
  • He looks exhausted. His bloodred eyes are sunken in, and his fangs are covered in blood.
  • Vincent Savile: Thank goodness she didn't take you.
  • Vincent's gaze falls upon the Baroness' remains.
  • When he sees Doctor Grey standing next to me, his eyes grow wary.
  • Vincent Savile: Caroline, why is he here?
  • You: Doctor Grey is--
  • In the blink of an eye, the silver revolver is cocked and aimed at Vincent.

  • You: Doctor Grey, what are you doing?!
  • I rush forwards and stand defensively in front of Vincent, arms flung wide open.
  • Edward Grey: Miss Rayes, step aside! That man is a vampire!
  • You: Don't you recognize him? He's Vincent Savile!
  • Edward Grey: That's just a fake identity he cooked up to look for prey. Just look at him!
  • Edward Grey: That thing behind you is a monster covered in blood!
  • Vincent Savile: I see you have a secret identity as well, Doctor Grey.
  • Edward Grey: My identity has nothing to do with you. Take another step, and I'll put a bullet through you.

  • The two men face each other. The tension between them is palpable.
  • Vincent's bloodred eyes are filled with murderous intent, and Doctor Grey's finger is slowly pressing down on the trigger--

Defend Vincent

  • You: (I can't watch him kill Vincent!)
  • I throw myself at Vincent.
  • There's a flash of light, and a bang. The bullet flies past my hair and hits a tree branch behind me.
  • Edward Grey: What are you doing, Miss Rayes?!
  • You: Please put down the gun, Doctor Grey.
  • You: Vincent won't hurt us. He's my friend!
  • Edward Grey: A vampire as a friend?
  • Edward Grey: You're playing with fire, Miss Rayes.
  • Vincent Savile: Caroline, step aside. He can't handle me.
  • You: Doctor Grey, please believe me!
  • You: If Vincent hadn't rescued me from the ritual, I would be dead by now!
  • You: He revealed his identity, and fought with the Baroness to protect me!
  • Vincent Savile: Caroline...
  • Doctor Grey stares at Vincent for a long while. Then he slowly puts his gun away.

Waver in my resolve

  • You: (I, what should I do...)
  • You: (Vincent rescued me, but will Doctor Grey believe he's innocent?)
  • You: (There's blood on his fangs. It must be from the club members...)
  • Edward Grey: Vincent is very dangerous right now, Miss Rayes.
  • Edward Grey: Please come to my side, for your own safety!
  • Vincent Savile: Go, Caroline. Don't force yourself.
  • I look at Doctor Grey's resolute eyes. I can hear Vincent's labored breathing.
  • I'm confused. I don't know what to do.
  • There's a sudden commotion outside the woods. People shouting, and dogs barking. They seem to be headed towards the cemetery.
  • You: There's a lot of people coming! Are they here to save us?
  • The instant Doctor Grey's attention is diverted, Vincent lets out a whistle.
  • The crows rush out of the trees and surround Doctor Grey and I, obscuring our vision.
  • When they disperse, Vincent is already gone.

If you last read 1-9 instead of 1-10, and last read 1-15 instead of 1-16

  • Mysterious Baroness: End of hide and seek. My darling little lamb is about to enter dreamland.
  • Mysterious Baroness: When you awake, you shall stand at the pinnacle of power, and be worshiped by the masses.
  • Mysterious Baroness: Oh wait, you will no longer be in possession of this beautiful body when that happens, hahaha...
  • Her maniacal laughter echoes around the woods, and the Baroness' scarlet eyes are cruel and cold.

When you go up against a powerful enemy with no power of your own, it is akin to smashing an egg against a rock. It's no shame to ask others for help.
Doctor Grey is earnest and generous, but he does not voluntarily reach out to others. If you place your trust in him, he will think of a way to help you during a crisis.
