- After the Scarlet Rose Club was banned, the newspapers stopped publishing articles on the epidemic, and it seems as though everything's back to normal.
- People are relieved, and start getting back to their various social activities.
- You: (Was the Baroness really behind the epidemic? She said that it had nothing to do with her...)
- You: (The people she drank blood from died on the spot, or turned into walking corpses.)
- You: (That's totally unlike the infected person I met in Eastern District.)
- I'm suddenly reminded of the mark on my left hand, and I roll up my sleeve to check. It has vanished.
- Madam Petit: Caroline, what are you doing? I've been knocking on your door for quite a while.
- You: I'm sorry, Aunt Petit, I didn't notice.
- Madam Petit: *sigh* I know, you're bored at home.
- Aunt Petit looks at me gently. She no longer sounds as stern as she did a few days ago.
- Madam Petit: I think you've learned your lesson about what kind of things ladies should or should not take part in.
- Madam Petit: Tonight, Bernard will be holding a ball at his residence. Let us go together.
- You: So... I'm no longer grounded?
- Madam Petit: I can't keep you cooped up at home forever. You'll despise me.
- You: I wouldn't, Aunt Petit. I know you mean well.
- Madam Petit: You're definitely more dignified than Miss Barnet.
- You: Is Priscilla all right? You mentioned that she's been grounded too...
- Madam Petit: I just visited the Barnet residence some days ago. Your friend is still the same as before, don't you worry.
- You: As long as she's fine.
- Madam Petit: I sincerely hope that you two will come to your senses, and behave like proper ladies from now on.
- Madam Petit: Alright, it's getting late. Go change into a gown.
- Today's ball is filled with laughter and cheer, and no one mentions the epidemic.
- Jesse Lindvall: Caroline, you're finally attending a ball!
- Jesse Lindvall: Have you read the book I gave you? Isn't it interesting?
- You: I'm sorry, I've not had time to read it yet.
- You: (I've not been in the mood to read!)
- Jesse Lindvall: Haha, Caroline, you must read it carefully. It's a good book about life decisions.
- Jesse winks at me meaningfully.
- I look around me, but I don't see Vincent nor Doctor Grey. I'm not sure what to feel about that.
- Jesse Lindvall: Caroline, who are you looking for? Edward?
- You: Yes...
- Jesse Lindvall: I said I'd help you get in contact, but... I didn't expect you to be so eager to see him.
- Jesse grins teasingly.
- Jesse Lindvall: Edward has been too busy with patients lately, and I'm afraid he has no spare time at all.
- Jesse Lindvall: The weather's getting cooler, and even if there's no epidemic, the people in the slums will be struggling to survive.
- You: Doctor Grey is a good doctor with a great sense of duty, and...
- Jesse Lindvall: And what?
- Jesse Lindvall: Why do I feel that every time you mention Edward, you seem to have something to say but can't say it?
- You: I just can't think of the right word to use to describe Doctor Grey.
- Jesse Lindvall: Handsome, gentle, knowledgeable -- all words that can be used.
- You: (No, the most suitable word right now would be "mysterious".)
- Jesse boasts to me about Doctor Grey's good traits again, and then he has to go off to talk to other people.
- My eyes wander about the room and to my delight, I spot Priscilla standing in a corner.
- You: (She appears to be talking to some of the girls from etiquette class. That's rather unusual.)
- I hurry towards her.
- Lady A: Miss Barnet, aren't you supposed to be grounded?
- Lady B: If I were you, having joined that evil, murderous club, I wouldn't dare show my face outdoors.
- Lady A: I heard Miss Hurst was sent to live in the countryside, because her father was worried that she would bring shame to the family.
- Two mean-looking ladies are standing next to Priscilla, mocking her.
- Priscilla's gaze is turned downward, and she doesn't say a word, but her chin is stubbornly raised.
- Lady A: You're usually so good with words, Miss Barnet. Why aren't you arguing with us now?
- Lady B: I guess some people just have to learn a bitter lesson before they can keep their mouths shut. Oh, don't look so stern, Miss Barnet. We're merely concerned about you.
- Lady A: There's no one here who would deign to talk to you, except us.
- Lady B: As your friends, we just hope you can adhere to a lady's code of conduct.
- You: Excuse me. I feel that being respectful towards others is one of the basic things you should do as a lady.
- Lady A: What do you mean by that, Miss Rayes?
- Lady B: Shouldn't we advise Miss Barnet after she has done something so terribly wrong?
- You: The 8th rule of <A Lady's Code of Conduct> is---
- You: When your conversation partner remains silent, you should smile and walk away.
- Lady A: Miss Rayes! You're as insolent as Miss Barnet! We're only trying to be nice.
- The two of them eye me furiously, then turn and leave with their noses in the air.
- Priscilla Barnet: Caroline, I haven't seen you in a while, but you're just the same as before. Deceptively timid, but fierce when you want to be.
- You: Priscilla, are you all right? I was really worried about you after we got separated that night.
- You: Aunt Petit told me she visited your home. Did she lecture you?
- Priscilla Barnet: You're just as much of a busybody as Madam Petit.
- Priscilla smiles awkwardly.
- Priscilla Barnet: Father wanted to send me to the countryside, but Madam Petit said that would make it harder to educate me.
- Priscilla Barnet: She wants me to continue with the etiquette lessons. She also said that it's unhealthy for me to stay cooped up indoors for too long, and recommended that I start socializing again.
- Priscilla Barnet: And... She even said that I have a talent for literature, and that I should stay in London to develop my potential... I have to admit she's quite discerning.
- You: Aunt Petit might look really fierce, but she cares a lot about women.
- Priscilla Barnet: I can tell who's sincere and who isn't.
- Priscilla Barnet: I didn't talk back to those girls, not because I agree with them, and not because I lack the courage.
- Priscilla Barnet: But because I've promised Madam Petit that I won't be so impulsive anymore.
- You: Priscilla, you really have changed somewhat... But that might not be a bad thing.
- Priscilla Barnet: I haven't changed. I still don't agree with the whole "angel in the house" concept.
- Priscilla Barnet: Oh well, let's not talk about all these. Tell me, what happened that night?
- Priscilla Barnet: After you shoved me, I fainted from the effects of the prayer water, and when I woke up, the police were already there.
- Priscilla Barnet: Did the Baroness catch you? How did you get away?
- You: I... I ran into the woods while the Baroness wasn't looking.
- Priscilla Barnet: And then? Did she go after you?
- You: Yes, yes, I was really scared, and I hid in the trees. I didn't dare to move one bit.
- You: Then there was a gun shot, and I couldn't hear the Baroness anymore.
- You: I waited for a while more, just to be safe, and when I came out of the woods, I found out that the Baroness is dead.
- Priscilla Barnet: Gun shot?
- Priscilla Barnet: You can't kill the Baroness with an ordinary gun. We both saw that.
- Priscilla ponders for a while, and then she brightens up.
- Priscilla Barnet: Did you see the person who fired the gun?
- You: No.
- Priscilla Barnet: What a pity. He must have been a vampire hunter!
- You: Vampire hunter?
- Priscilla Barnet: When I was grounded, I looked through all the books I could find on vampires.
- Priscilla Barnet: Some books mentioned a vampire hunter organization established a few centuries ago.
- Priscilla Barnet: The hunters went through harsh training to gain the skills they needed to hunt vampires.
- You: Is there really such an organization?
- Priscilla Barnet: The books also say that vampire hunters usually concealed their identities so that people wouldn't find out about them.
- Priscilla Barnet: There must be vampire hunters at work in London! How could an ordinary human being kill a vampire?
- You: Can I borrow those books from you, Priscilla?
- Priscilla Barnet: Of course.
- Priscilla Barnet: Do you think London is still in danger from vampires?
Agree with her
- You: It's certainly possible.
- You: The Baroness is dead, but there may be other vampires in hiding.
- You: And I suspect the epidemic isn't over yet.
- Priscilla Barnet: You've thought about this a lot too, I see.
- Priscilla Barnet: I'm afraid we're the only two people in London who know the most about what's really going on.
Advise her not to think too much
- You: It's all over, Priscilla. Don't think so much.
- Priscilla Barnet: You really believe all those fake reports?!
- You: There hasn't been any news of infections lately, so...
- Priscilla Barnet: You're so naive, Caroline!
- Priscilla Barnet: The Baroness is dead, but there may be other vampires lurking in London.
- Priscilla Barnet: And I have a feeling that things won't end so simply.
- You: Do you have something in mind, Priscilla?
- Priscilla Barnet: Of course. The Baroness deceived me, and I want my revenge!
- Priscilla Barnet: A few days ago, I wrote a letter to a detective I'm acquainted with. He'll come over to help me investigate the truth.
- Priscilla Barnet: Do you want to join us, Caroline?
- You: I...
- I'm tempted, but unsure. Vincent might get into trouble.
- Priscilla Barnet: *sigh* I knew you wouldn't have the resolve.
- Priscilla Barnet: Never mind, I won't push you. It's good to stay safely at home after such a dangerous incident.
- You: I'm sorry.
- You: (I better not tell anyone about Vincent for now.)
- Priscilla Barnet: All the best, Caroline.
- As the ball draws to an end, there's a flash of lightning, and a sudden storm inconveniences the guests returning home.
- Aunt Petit was about to take me home as well, but Mr. Erskine suddenly feels unwell, and she decided to stay back to check on him for a while.
- The guests gradually disperse, and I wait in the hall for a long while before an exhausted Aunt Petit enters.
- You: How is Mr. Erskine?
- Madam Petit: He drank too much. He'll be fine. He should keep his age in mind... Oh, how he worries me!
- Madam Petit: The storm will probably get much worse. You should take the carriage home first. I'll stay a while longer.
- You: Will you be all right going home later? Why don't I stay to keep you company?
- Madam Petit: That won't be proper! It's already not proper for me to stay back.
- Jesse Lindvall: Stop arguing. I have a perfect solution.
- You: Jesse?! You're still here...
- Jesse Lindvall: I can send Miss Rayes back home. Madam Petit's carriage can stay.
- Madam Petit: That's great, Mr. Lindvall. I'm counting on you.
- I get into Jesse's carriage, and think about Priscilla's words with a heavy heart.
- Jesse Lindvall: You look gloomier than the weather outside, Caroline.
- You: I've been feeling so uneasy lately.
- Jesse Lindvall: You're such a worrywart.
- Jesse Lindvall: I do wish you'd give me a smile during my last few days in London.
- You: Last few days? You're about to leave London?!
- Jesse Lindvall: I'm thoroughly sick of London's superficiality, and I want to spend some time in the countryside.
- Jesse Lindvall: Don't be so shocked, Caroline. You know what the people here are like.
- There's a trace of exhaustion in Jesse's smiling eyes.
- Jesse Lindvall: Just a while ago, they were all doom and gloom. Now they're all in great spirits because nothing affects them.
- Jesse Lindvall: I'm not that close to my bunch of idiotic friends, but I still can't accept how uncaring they are about death.
- You: That's right. They're all celebrating the fact that they weren't sacrificed, and no one's grieving the dead.
- Jesse shrugs, and smiles bitterly.
- Jesse Lindvall: Everyone's always singing my praises in the ton, but if I were to die some day--
- Jesse Lindvall: The only ones who would miss me would be Edward, my sister, and you.
- You: Nonsense! Jesse, you'll live long and have great health.
- Jesse Lindvall: Hahaha, I'm just joking, Miss Rayes!
- His laughter does cheer me up a little.
- Soon, the carriage reaches familiar streets.
- Jesse Lindvall: I'm going to the Eastern District, Caroline. If Madam Petit asks, please keep it a secret.
- You: It's late at night, and it's pouring outside, why are you going to the Eastern District?!
- Jesse Lindvall: Edward, of course. He's seeing patients in Eastern District today.
- Jesse Lindvall: It's difficult for him to hire a carriage in this weather, so I'll just send him home too.
- You: The two of you share an enviable friendship.
- Jesse Lindvall: Haha, that's because I've been relying on Edward's marvelous medicine for years.
- When I reach the residence, I stand at the door, and peer worriedly at Jesse's carriage disappearing into the gloomy curtain of rain.
- The night deepens, and Aunt Petit does not return. I watch the rain outside the window, and fall asleep.
- The scene before me makes me realize I'm dreaming again.
- I'm a child huddling in the corner of a room, looking timidly at my mother.
- You: Mama... What's wrong?
- Mother's face is devoid of color, and her bloodred eyes stare at me as if possessed.
- You: Mama?
- Something vicious flashes across her eyes, and she howls, pouncing at me with clawed hands--
- Cyril: No! Lavinia!
- I scream and cover my face. A broad figure stands before me, protecting me.
- Cyril: Lavinia, calm down. It's Caroline!
- Cyril: Pull yourself together! Lavinia, I beg you!
- Father hugs Mother tightly, crying and calling out her name over and over again.
- Lavinia: Caroline... My...
- My mother stops briefly, muttering my name, as if in a dream.
- But her awareness is quickly buried again, and she roars, struggling violently.
- You: Papa, Mama...
- I squeeze my eyes shut. Father keeps begging, and Mother keeps roaring ferociously.
- They keep on tussling, and then Father grunts.
- Mother stops roaring, and there's a dull thud.
- You: Papa... What happened?
- Cyril: Don't look! Caroline... don't look...
- Amid Father's sobs, I open my eyes uneasily, and peep through my fingers.
- Mother is lying on the floor. Moonlight shines through the window and falls on her face. She looks like she's sleeping peacefully.
- You: What's wrong with Mama?
- Father's facing away from me, and his shoulders are shaking violently.
- I want to take his hand, but then I notice he's holding a silver dagger. Its blade is dripping with fresh blood.
- Deafening thunder startles me awake, and I press a hand to my racing heart.
- You: It's just a nightmare! It's not real!
- You: Father loved Mother. He wouldn't do that!
- Sobbing, I bury my face in my hands, trying to comfort myself. But I know this cruel dream could very well be reality.
- You: Mother's red eyes and fangs in the dream look just like those of the Baroness' and Vincent's.
- You: The terrible thoughts she mentioned before...
- A frightening, yet unbelievable thought takes form in my mind.
- Hurried footsteps can be heard outside my door.
- You: Has Aunt Petit returned?
- I look out the window. The sky has brightened, and the rain has stopped.
- Anna: Miss, Miss Rayes...
- You: What's wrong, Anna?
- Anna: The Lindvall family sent a message: Jesse Lindvall suddenly fell ill last night, and passed away in the Eastern District...
- You: What did you say?
- Thunder keeps roaring in the clouds above, and there's a ringing in my ears.
- Anna: The messenger says that Scotland Yard might question you soon... Please... Please be prepared.
- A sudden wave of dizziness sweeps over me, and I collapse on the floor, my mind a complete blank.
