Aldous: I'm sorry I kept you waiting, Princess.
You: Aldous! You're finally here!
Edward XII: Oh? This must be the important friend.
You: Yes, father, He's a prince from a faraway land. His name is--
Audwin: Your Majesty, my name is Audwin. Please accept my humblest apologies. I nearly missed the princess' coming-of-age ceremony due to some pesky troubles.
You: (Aud...win?)
Edward XII: Oh, you are indeed quite late. You're forgiven since my daughter is this ecstatic at your arrival. But the ball is about to end.
Audwin: If Signy agrees, the last song will be put on hold for us.
Edward XII: Haha, are you so sure that Signy will grant you that last dance?
Audwin: Of course. Princess Signy, may I have the last dance?
(He makes his way over, gracefully bows before me, and extends his hand. He beams at me as we make eye contact. There's something amiss today. His mannerisms feel different somehow. Although he phrased it as a question, I can't help feeling like there is no room for rejection.)
You: You may.
(I hold out my hand and together, we step on to the dance floor. We start the second dance of the night, which is also the last dance of my coming-of-age ceremony.)
Audwin: You're so beautiful today, Signy.
You: ...Oh, well you feel different today.
Audwin: Is that so? I guess you don't know me very well.
You: Perhaps you're right. I don't know you well as a human... Just now, you told my Father your name was Audwin?
Audwin: Yes, that's my real name. Aldous was a name I used, in order to remember someone important to me. But now-- We're about to be married, and I want to be honest with you. Will you call me Audwin from now on, my Princess?
You: All right...Audwin.
(The spotlight follows us as we waltz across the dance floor, immersed in the music and the moment. Finally, the music ends, and it's time for the highlight of the event.)
Edward XII: Ladies and gentlemen, the ball has come to an end. Now, I will make two important announcements. First, my daughter Signy will officially be the heir to throne after the coming-of-age ceremony. And second, she will choose her future husband from among the princes and noblemen who are present today.
(The hall falls into silence, and everyone waits for my decision.)
Ferdinand: We know that already. Hurry and tell us, Princess!
(The sudden exclamation from the rowdy prince starts the crowd murmuring, All of them look at me with anticipation, except Audwin-- He nods with a soft smile, and I think of the white swan that warms my heart.)
Edward XII: It's time to make your decision Signy. Follow your heart.
You: Yes, Father.
(I walk towards Audwin and take his hand, then turn to face the crowd--)
You: I choose him to be my future husband. Audwin, are you wiling to marry me?
Audwin: Of course, my Princess.
(Audwin agrees, taking my hands into his. I look at Father, who nods with approval.)
Ambrose: Where did this prince come from? I've never heard of him.
Herman: Can't you tell? He's a close friend of the Princess. He couldn't have known the Princess before me!
Raymond: But the Princess chose him, not you. Let's accept it with grace, my friends.
Ambrose: I guess we have no choice but to congratulate the Princess and this lucky gentleman.
Raymond: Congratulations, Your Highness.
Edward XII: Now, I declare--
Aldous: Wait! Signy...
You: You...You are--
Aldous: It's me, Aldous. I'm the real Swan Prince.
You: Heavens! What's going on?
Audwin: Don't believe him! I'm the Swan Prince, Signy. You must not be deceived by this strange man.
(I look at the two identical faces, and feel as though I've been thrown into a bizarre dream. Other than the color of their outfits, they look exactly alike.)
Aldous: Don't trust him, Signy! He's the Owl Sorcerer!
Audwin: YOU are the Owl Sorcerer. Stop playing innocent. It's disgusting. Remember this ribbon, Signy? You bandaged my wound with it. I've been carrying it with me all this while.
You: It has my name on it. It's really my ribbon!
Aldous: No, Signy! He injured me and took the ribbon from me!
(I'm more inclined to believe Audwin who has my ribbon, but my heart clenches at the familiar sorrow in the other man's eyes...
Edward XII: Preposterous! Someone is trying to deceive my daughter! Don't panic, Signy. If one of them is really that important friend of yours-- You will definitely recognize him.
(Father's words make me calm down and think.)
You: I have a way to prove who's the real Swan Prince. On a summer day three years ago, I lost my way in the forest and passed out by the Swan Lake. I found myself back in the castle the next day, but my backpack was gone. Ms. Roslin swed me the backpack to match my new dress. I was really upset that I lost it. Later, I spent hours looking for it in the forest with Snowy, the white swan. If you're him, you should remember the color of my backpack.
Audwin: That's easy. It was red in color! It matched your lovely dress perfectly.
(Audwin answers quickly and confidently, but--.)
Aldous: No, the backpack was pale yellow in color. You didn't like the color, but you treasured it because it was a gift from your tutor. You weren't wearing a new dress when I first met you at the Swan Lake three years ago... You were wearing commoner's clothing. But it couldn't hide your briliance. You truly are a special girl, Signy.
You: You're the real Swan Prince. Aldous!
(A dark, ominous aura surrounds Audwin as he transforms into a sorcere in black)
Ambrose: Whi on earth are you? An evil sorcerer?!
Ferdinand: You don't scare me--Ahhh!
Audwin: Foolish humans. Know your place!
You: What did you do to them?!
(The princes and noblemen suddenly collapse on the ground, unconscious.)
Audwin: Nothing. They were being a nuisance, so I shut them up.
Edward XII: How dare you! Leave my castle at once, or else--
Audwin: Or else what? Think carefully, old man. I'm your daughter's future husband. Are you sure you want to lay a hand on me? I'd hate to see my lovely wife heartbroken on our first day of engagement. You are her most beloved father, after all.
You: You're not my future husband!
Audwin: Hahahaha! You're not very bright, my little Signy. You were the one who chose me, remember? Audwin, the mighty Owl Sorcerer. You missed your chance to save that useless swan. Now his curse will never be lifted. You will marry me, like you promised.
Roslin: We won't let Signy marry a demon like you!
Audwin: How naive. Do you think you have a choice?
Chief Minister: Insolent demon. We won't let you do as you please!
Audwin: Heh. I was expecting more grace from an old man like you. Your castle doesn't seem to welcome me very much, Signy. Remember our promise. I will be back.
(He turns around, taking the despairing Aldous with him.
You: Wait! Let him go!
Aldous: Don't worry about me, Signy. Please take care of yourself. I'm sorry....
You: No, it was my fault... I won't let him hurt you again!
Audwin: What a moving scene. Too bad it doesn't move me.
You: Audwin! If you take him away, I won't marry you even if you kill me!
Audwin: Oh? Does that mean you'll agree to marry me if I let him off?
You:...Yes.
Edward XII: Signy!
Roslin: Signy!
Audwin: That sounds like a good deal...Very well. I won't take him away, but--
(Audwin chants a spell and waves his fingers in the air before pointing them at Aldous.
You: What did you do to him?
Audwin: Don't worry, I won't kill him. I'm concerned about letting my bride-to-be near a man who has designs on her, so... I put a curse on him. If you touch him, he will turn into a swan forever. And he won't turn back into a human even when night falls. Hahahaha!
You: You're despicable.
Audwin: Farewell, my dear princess. Rememeber to start making preparations for our wedding, or I will bring disaster upon all of you!
(He turns into a giant owl and takes off into the air, disappearing from the hall.)
