- Comte de la Motte: So you found the necklace. How much money are you hoping for in return?
- Jeanne: Money? How short-sighted. Getting to know the Queen is the best reward I could hope for.
- Comte de la Motte: Most unwise... Her Majesty is quite picky about the company she keeps.
- Comte de la Motte: The only one she's close to is the Duchess Polignac.
- Jeanne: Friendship between two women is not complicated. That's something you will never understand, I suppose.
- Jeanne: Gabrielle already benefits much from her association with the Queen. I can't afford to miss out!
- Comte de la Motte: All the best then.
- Comte de la Motte remains doubtful.
- But a fool like Nicholas de la Motte wouldn't know an opportunity if it slapped him in the face.
- I shall not waste my breath. I change into an elegant dress and head for the Palace.
- A powerful fragrance assaults my nose as I alight from the carriage near the Queen's Estate.
- Her Estate, the Petit Trianon, is located within the Palace of Versailles, and this exquisite garden belongs to the Queen.
- The King's love for his Queen is evident as soldiers line the courtyard, protecting Her Majesty.
- But even if they're the Queen's guards, they're no better than common thugs.
- Soldier: Halt! Entry into the Estate is strictly forbidden!
- Jeanne: I am Jeanne de Valois, Comtesse de La Motte.
- Jeanne: I must see Her Majesty urgently.
- Soldier: Her Majesty has refused all visitors. Please leave.
- Jeanne: It seems you, dear guard, do not know! I'm a close friend of Her Majesty!
- Soldier: The Duchess Polignac is Her Majesty's only close companion, and she is currently in Her Majesty's company.
- Jeanne: What a coincidence. Her Majesty has also requested my company. Now if you'll let me through...
- Soldier: If you were invited, please show me your invitation letter.
- Jeanne: I was invited by Her Majesty in person at a jewelry shop yesterday. There's no need for a formal invitation between friends.
- Soldier: My apologies, Madame. Her Majesty has refused all visitors without an invitation letter.
- Jeanne: But I have something very important for Her Majesty.
- Jeanne: I suggest you let me through before Her Majesty punishes you!
- Soldier: You can leave the message or item with me, and I will have it delivered to Her Majesty.
- Jeanne: Are you dull? Do you think I could possibly hand over something so precious to you?
- Jeanne: What if you break it? I would have to answer to Her Majesty for your blunder!
- The guard's stubbornness is getting on my nerves.
- Soldier: Madame, I must advise you to leave.
Continue arguing.
- Jeanne: Damn it!
- I take another step forward, and the guards raise their guns. To think these lowly guards would point their guns at a helpless lady!
- I stagger backwards in surprise and trip over myself.
- Jeanne: Look at this, Your Majesty! Your guards' barbaric treatment of your friends!
- The guards stop approaching only after I start to "cry" loudly.
- Soldier: Madame, we did not touch you. Please leave.
- Jeanne: Despicable, lowly fiend! You won't even take responsibility for your actions?
- Jeanne: I merely took a step and you attacked me! Is the Palace of Versailles such a lawless place?!
- Soldier: You are being unreasonable, Madame.
- ???: What's happening here?
- A well-dressed attendant approaches us.
- ???: Oh my, why is this beautiful lady on the ground?
- He walks to my side and helps me up.
- Jeanne: Good sir, thank goodness you came! These brutes would have killed me!
- Soldier: Please do not listen to her. We have not done anything to her.
- Soldier: Her Majesty has strictly forbidden all visitors, especially those with questionable intent.
- Jeanne: And I have already told them I'm Her Majesty's friend!
Verbally abuse the guard.
- With their weapons raised, I have no choice but to take a step back.
- Jeanne: You dare point your weapons at me?!
- Soldier: You must leave, Madame.
- Jeanne: You dare treat a close friend of Her Majesty in this manner? You must be out of your mind!
- Jeanne: Ignorant fool! Fiend! Brute! If I show up late I'll be sure to let Her Majesty know exactly who was responsible!
- Jeanne: Who would assign such ignorant, pathetic fools to guard royalty?
- The guard doesn't react to my verbal lashing, further fueling my anger.
- Jeanne: You think you have the right to stop me?
- Jeanne: If you won't let me pass, I'll wait right here for Her Majesty!
- Soldier: This is the Queen's Estate, Madame. There will be consequences if you do not leave.
- Jeanne: YOU!
- ???: What's happening over there? I can hear you both across the gardens.
- A well-dressed attendant approaches us.
- Soldier: Sir, this lady is trying to enter the Estate.
- Soldier: But Her Majesty has strictly forbidden all visitors, especially those with questionable intent.
- Servant: It is as you say.
- Servant: However, this is no way to treat a lady. Please put your weapons away.
- Jeanne: Thank you, good sir. It is most fortunate that you arrived when you did!
- Servant: It is my pleasure to serve.
- Servant: However, these fine guards were given a job, and they are fulfilling it. I'm sure a fair lady like yourself wouldn't put them in a spot, would she?
- Jeanne: Please don't misunderstand. I'm merely trying to deliver an extremely important necklace to Her Majesty. It is of the utmost importance that I do it personally.
- Jeanne: But these ruffians refused to listen, and threatened me instead.
- Soldier: You were trying to barge into the Estate without an invitation, Madame!
- Jeanne: How bullheaded. Do you think that I, Jeanne de Valois-Saint-Rémy, would lie to you?
- Servant: Jeanne? Comtesse de La Motte, Jeanne?
- Servant: What a coincidence! I was just tasked with delivering my employer's invitation to you! To think I would meet you here!
- Jeanne: Oh? Then it is my honor to have you escort me into the Estate!
- This attendant seems to understand what I'm going through. Perhaps...
- He might be able to help me improve this situation...
- Jeanne: You hear that, fool?
- Servant: Our house is currently holding a banquet in the Palace of Versailles. As a good friend, the Comtesse should attend as well.
- Servant: Perhaps you'll meet Her Majesty there.
- Jeanne: (Holding a banquet in the Palace? The person he serves must be extremely important!)
- Jeanne: Your employer is kind to extend the invitation. I couldn't possibly disappoint them.
- The attendant leads me through the halls to the banquet.
- I'm full of excitement. Even if I don't meet the Queen today, I might still be able to profit from this meeting.
- Jeanne: Thank you for escorting me, good sir. Might I ask who you serve?
- Servant: Do not worry, Comtesse. We will arrive at the banquet shortly.
- Jeanne: Ah, you misunderstand. I merely wish to express my gratitude to your employer.
- Servant: Please have some faith in my employer. They sincerely wish to meet you.
- Servant: They have heard of your various achievements in Paris and are impressed.
- Servant: As such, they wish to invite you to the banquet.
- Jeanne: I am honored!
- Jeanne: Please convey my gratitude to your employer.
- Servant: It shall be done, Comtesse.
- I finally arrive at the end of the opulent corridor. The way into the grand hall--and into high society--is now open to me!
