- Gabrielle: You mean, that sultry woman is the King's mistress?!
- You: I saw them myself. They must be close, considering how familiar they are with each other.
- Gabrielle's hands are balled into fists. Her cheeks are red with anger.
- Gabrielle: That's terrible!
- Gabrielle: How could the King do such a thing? Has he even considered your feelings?
- I watch the bustling market from inside the carriage. The shouting of the vendors adds life to the city.
- And here I am, doomed to a life of dull repetition, slowly withering away.
- Gabrielle: You shouldn't put up with this, Your Majesty!
- Watching Gabrielle rage on my behalf makes me feel as though we're rather alike.
- You: Your family has made you suffer a lot too.
- Gabrielle looks away, but she can't hide the sorrow in her voice.
- Gabrielle: I can't change my life... There's nothing I can do.
- Gabrielle: But things are different for you, Your Majesty! You still have a chance.
- Gabrielle: You don't have to live the same kind of life!
- She takes my hand. Her eyes shine earnestly, as though she's trying to give all her courage to me.
- Touched, I interlace my fingers with hers and squeeze back.
- You: You're right! I don't want to live such a life!
- You: I should confront Louis about his actions!
- You: I will demand an explanation from him!
- Gabrielle: I'll go with you!
- In high spirits, I decide to bring Gabrielle along to the shabby house for the confrontation.
- You: We'd better bring someone else along. If anything happens, they can protect us and we'll look more imposing too.
- Gabrielle: There's only... the coachman. I'll speak to him.
- Gabrielle leaves the carriage while I think about how to question Louis later.
- You: I can't wear this dress to confront him. It's not striking at all!
- You: I should change into something imposing and elegant to see him!
- I adjust my accessories, and partially shield my face with a feather fan. I nod, pleased with myself.
- Gabrielle looks surprised when she returns to the carriage.
- Gabrielle: Your Majesty, you look absolutely stunning, like a rose atop the mountains.
- Gabrielle: Is this it? The place is so bare. I can't believe the King lets his mistress stay here...
- She looks around curiously, apparently feeling the same disbelief I did when faced with the rusty door.
- You: Perhaps this is deliberate, so that nobody will think that she stays here.
- You: Go ahead and knock.
- The coachman steps forward, and bangs on the door.
- My heart seems to thump along with the banging. I'm choked with anxiety.
- Gabrielle: Breathe, Your Majesty. I can hear your heart racing.
- I take a few deep breaths to calm myself down.
- You: I'm just a little agitated. It's my first time doing something like this. Of course, I hope it's the last time too.
- The door opens suddenly, and a plainly dressed woman appears. She seems to be a maid.
- Maid: Oh. Can I help you with something?
- You: (This is not the person I saw! Did I get something wrong?)
- You: Isn't there a golden-haired lady living here? We wish to pay her a visit.
- Surprise colors the maid's face as she looks at us.
- Maid: That is indeed our Madame. Have you arranged to meet her today?
- You: (Of course I hadn't. If I'd arranged for a meeting, I wouldn't be in this situation right now.)
- The maid seems to realize something is fishy when we can't explain ourselves. She tries to shut the door on us.
- Maid: I'm sorry. Madame did not inform me of any guests. I cannot let you in.
- Maid: Please leave.
- The coachman reaches out to block her. Gabrielle gently explains that in our hurry, we've forgotten to contact her Madame in advance.
- The maid seems a little afraid of the strong coachman. She looks at us doubtfully.
- Maid: May I know how to address you? I have to check with our Madame first.
- You: Madame L-Louise!
- You: Tell her Louise and Camille are here to see her.
- Maid: Why don't you visit another day, Madame Louise and Madame Camille?
- Maid: We have an important guest today. Our Madame's tending to him in the drawing room.
- I perk up. I didn't get the location wrong after all. Louis is here with his mistress right now.
- You: Does the guest have brown eyes and wear a beige coat?
- You: He brought a gift too, and the bag is from Delman Bookstore.
- The maid's eyes widen and she nods.
- Maid: Indeed.
- You: We are acquainted with your Madame's guest. Our relationship is special.
- I step forward, tapping her shoulder lightly with my fan.
- You: Now, can you bring me to him?
- Maid: Please wait. Let me inform Madame first.
- The maid insists on having us wait where we are. Her eyes dart around suspiciously.
- You: (Is she thinking of tipping them off?)
- You: (I won't be able to catch them if she warns them!)
- You: Don't worry. We've known each other for a long time. Your guest wouldn't mind.
- I try to push myself in while she's not paying attention.
- You: (I must get in before she alerts them!)
- The maid is quick to react, stopping me in my tracks.
- Maid: Madame, please! Barging into someone else's home is most unladylike!
- I stop, feeling wronged. The whole world seems to be helping Louis, and only Gabrielle supports me.
- Gabrielle steps in front of me.
- Gabrielle: Miss, do you know who you are stopping?
- Gabrielle: Do you realize that you're helping someone tear apart another family?
- The maid backs away, startled by Gabrielle's words.
- Maid: Erm, all right. You do look extremely anxious.
- Maid: I think you may have misunderstood something, but I'll bring you to Madame.
- Maid: They're in the drawing room. Please come with me.
- Maid: This is the drawing room.
- I flick a glance at Gabrielle and the coachman. As agreed, he puts a furious expression on his face.
- I square my shoulders, and try to look as imposing as I can.
- The door opens, and Louis comes into view.
- Louis XVI: Marie?
- The smile on his face freezes. When I see what's in the room, I freeze as well.
- You: What's going on?!
