- When it became clear that the mistress issue was all a misunderstanding, I was so embarrassed that I wanted to leave. Louis made me stay, however.
- I sit by his side, and watch him fiddle earnestly with the bird-shaped object in his hands.
- If Master Garman hadn't explained it to me, I wouldn't have been able to tell it's a lock at all.
- Locksmith: Would you like to try unlocking it, sir?
- Louis' eyes light up, and he pulls up his sleeves. I know he only does that when he's very earnest about something.
- You: Is this lock very difficult to open?
- Louis smiles and shakes his head. He points at the bunch of keys next to the lock.
- Louis XVI: These keys might be the right ones, but they might also be the wrong ones.
- You: What do you mean?
- Before he can explain, Master Garman speaks.
- Locksmith: This lock is one of my better works. It won't be easy to open.
- Locksmith: Why don't you time him, Madame? If he exceeds 15 minutes, he loses the challenge.
- You: That sounds fun!
- I've always liked games that involve some form of betting, so maybe that's why I like the idea so much.
- I take out my pocket watch, and show the time to Louis.
- You: Let's start now!
- Louis XVI: Wait, wait! I'm not ready yet!
- Louis anxiously grabs the keys and tools.
- I pick up my cup of tea, and secretly observe him over the rim of the cup.
- Louis seems at peace when he's focusing on the lock. He looks the way he does when he's working in the study. However, I can't help but sense a marked difference.
- Right now, he's like a child who has just received a new and exciting toy. He seems rather naive and adorable.
- There's a clear clicking sound in the relatively quiet room.
- Louis holds up the open lock, and looks at me with glee.
- Louis XVI: I've unlocked it, Marie.
- Louis: How long did I take?
- You: Ah yes... Let me see.
- I quickly set down the cup and check the pocket watch.
- You: 14 minutes... You win!
- He shyly places the lock in my palm, and then continues chatting with Master Garman.
- The unlocked bird's wings are spread open. I trace the intricate details with my fingers, feeling warm and cozy inside
- The horses' hooves strike the cobblestones with a crisp clip-clopping sound.
- Louis keeps examining the bird-shaped lock that Master Garman has lent him.
- You: You really love these locks.
- Louis XVI: Do you like uncovering secrets? Locks are like enticing secrets when they're locked.
- Louis XVI: Their mystery can only be solved with the correct keys. I'm very partial to the process of solving locks.
- Louis raises the bird-shaped lock in the air. It looks like it might come to life any moment.
- Louis XVI: Look at this bird. It can only spread its wings and fly when it is unlocked.
- Louis XVI: Master Garman enjoys crafting locks like this. That's why I admire him so much.
- Louis XVI: One day, I'll craft a lock that only I can open!
- Louis' eyes seem to shine when he talks about locks. Perhaps it's just the reflection of light from the street lamps.
- I'm momentarily touched by the enthusiasm in his eyes.
- Louis XVI: Why are you staring at me?
- I may have been looking at him too intensely. Louis' ears turn red.
- Louis XVI: Oh yes, Marie... How did you manage to find Master Garman?
- You: Ah, well.. I...
- Louis' question has put me in a spot. I don't know if I should be honest with him.
Tell him the truth
- You: I admit I was following you...
- You: I... I overheard some noble women gossiping in the garden about you having a mistress...
- Louis XVI: What?!
- You: Let me explain... I've always felt that you're not interested in me...
- I avoid Louis' shocked gaze. Ashamed, my voice falters.
- You: I was really upset, so I decided to follow you to catch you in the act...
- Louis XVI: Mistress? Did you think... Madame Greta is m-my...?
- I wish I could clap a hand over Louis' mouth. It's so embarrassing to hear him say those things.
- But it's too late. I close my eyes, and wait for him to rage at me.
Cover up with a lie
- You: It was a coincidence. I heard of a talented locksmith in Paris, so I wanted to learn from him.
- Louis XVI: You're interested in locksmithing too?
- You: It's... not exactly an interest...
- Louis can barely contain his excitement. I really can't bear lying to him any further.
- You: I'm just curious. That's all.
- Louis XVI: Oh... I see.
- The disappointment in his voice makes me realize how mean I've been.
- I'm lying to him just to avoid facing up to what I've done.
- You: I'm sorry, that's not what happened at all.
- Louis XVI: Huh?
- I close my eyes, and take a deep breath.
- You: (If Louis gets upset, it's all because I failed to place my trust in him.)
- You: I've always felt... that you're not interested in me. That's why I followed you...
- You: But I know I'm wrong now. I apologize.
- Louis XVI: I-it's not that I'm not interested in you... I knew I had a betrothed even before I met you.
- Louis XVI: And that she's a young lady as beautiful as a rose.
- Louis XVI: I want to share so many things with you, but I get tongue-tied when I see you.
- I slowly open my eyes. Louis is blushing. It's clear that it wasn't easy for him to say those words.
- His hands tug nervously at his pants.
- You: Don't keep them all to yourself. I'd like to share things with you too.
- Perhaps the heavens have given me courage, because I manage to reach out and take his hand.
- You: Why don't you show me the locks you've made when we're back in the palace?
- Louis looks at me gently and smiles.
- Louis XVI: I'd be glad to.
