- I finally have time off work today, so I decide to go to the market to unwind.
- For some reason, the line to get into the market is long today. I wait twice the time I usually do, and I still haven't made it inside.
- You: Whew! Finally!
- Is my mind playing tricks on me, or is the market much busier today?
- You: Oof!
- Just before I enter the market, I trip over something and fall to the ground.
- I get up and see some oddly shaped rocks by the door that weren't there before.
- Sinbad: Heavens me! Are you all right, Gina?
- Sinbad must have heard me fall because he rushes out from the parlor.
- You: Ouch! Who put these rocks here? They're in the way.
Get up quickly
- I get up and brush the sand from my clothes.
Reach out to Sinbad
- Sinbad reaches down and pulls me to my feet.
- Sinbad: I'm so sorry. They didn't fit in the storehouse, so I asked someone to place them here.
- You: Why are you hoarding rocks?
- Sinbad: They're no ordinary rocks. Each of them is a unique piece of art.
- Upon closer inspection, I see that the rocks are each carved with different patterns.
- Sinbad: I won't lie to you. I recently discovered a few folk artists, and these are some of their works.
- You: Folk artists?
- Sinbad: The most beautiful art doesn't always come from the palace. It can be found in the simplest places.
- You: So it seems...
- You: It just so happens that I got a beautiful gift for you today.
- I pull a flower out of my bag.
- You: People at the market say this flower symbolizes the bond between loved ones.
- Sinbad: What a heartwarming gift. Thank you, Gina!
- You: Sinbad, do you feel like the streets have been getting busier recently?
- You: On my walk here, I noticed everyone painting their houses or cleaning their yards.
- You: And the market looks astonishing with all the lights and decorations.
- Sinbad: People are excited about the Manna Festival.
- You: Manna Festival?
- Sinbad: It's one of the most special festivals in our Full Moon Kingdom!
- Sinbad: On that day, you won't recognize your neighbors.
- You: Is the festival a masked ball?
- Sinbad: No, I'm saying you'll see another side of everyone.
- Sinbad: You'll find out everyone's skilled in handicrafts and street performance.
- Sinbad: And there will be many artists from afar whose talents have yet to be seen here.
- It sounds like a traditional festival, but I get the sense there's more to it than I expect.
- You: Should we go to the market together during the Manna Festival?
- Sinbad: Well, the cargo ship that was delayed for a month and a half is finally here.
- Sinbad: I need to go and see if those fine spices arrived intact.
- Sinbad: The inventory process might last days.
- You: Then let me help you!
- Sinbad: No need. The old housekeeper and I can manage it. Young people like you should be off enjoying the festivities.
- On the day of the Manna Festival, I change into a cool, light dress.
- The Manna Festival is even more lively than what Sinbad said. It's as if the entire kingdom has gathered on the streets.
- I'm pushed and shoved by the enthusiastic crowd as I pass the aromatic food stalls and admire the flamboyantly dressed performers from afar.
- I'm still making my way through the crowd when I hear a familiar voice say my name.
- ???: Gina?
- You: Kahir?!
- Kahir: I didn't expect to see you here!
- Kahir: Did you come alone?
- You: I came with Samar and the girls. They're eating baklava at a stall.
- You: I was interested to see the festival, so I've been walking around.
- Kahir: How would you like to go to the Poetry Fest with me?
- You: Poetry Fest?
- Kahir: Yes. It's the highlight of the Manna Festival.
- Kahir: Passionate poets gather in the streets to recite their work. It happens every year during the festival.
- Kahir: Folk poetry is eclectic. Many of the poems describe people's lives in a genuine and insightful manner.
- Kahir: I think their poems are more detailed and vivid than the books in the royal palace.
- You: I get what you mean. Poetry not only tells a story, it can also reveal people's opinions.
- You: Are you hoping to better understand public opinion through the Poetry Fest?
- Kahir: Well, yes, that's one of the reasons I'd like to go.
- Kahir: But I also like to support literary development. Literature is of equal importance to the Full Moon Kingdom.
- You: What do you think is the meaning of literature?
- Kahir ponders my question.
- Kahir: A great kingdom is comprised of vast territory, grand buildings, and bountiful resources.
- Kahir lifts his head and gazes at the palace dome far in the distance.
- Kahir: Everything the eye sees will fade with time, perhaps even be forgotten.
- Kahir: But literature is different. It captures people's thoughts and emotions in a way that can be shared with future generations.
- Kahir: And even though recorded history can be lost to fire, stories that have been read and shared can be passed on by word of mouth.
- Kahir: A great kingdom has literature that transcends the ages, like poetry.
- Kahir's eyes are full of wonder, as if he's gazing into the future.
- You: Speaking of which, Sinbad has a sailor who likes to compose poems off the cuff.
- You: I don't always understand his verses.
- You: But it's evident they contain nuanced emotions.
- You: I get the sense his poems have deep thematic meaning.
- Kahir: That's the beauty of poetry. They tease our minds and our hearts. You appreciate poetry, Gina.
- Kahir: Does that mean you'll accept my invitation?
- Kahir: With your perceptive mind, I'm sure you'll pick up on some aspect of a poem's meaning that I don't.
- You: It's clear you'll be disappointed if I say no.
- Kahir: In that case, let's be off.
