Letters[]

First Letter

Captain Cannonball,

You're the most frustrating woman I have ever met.

You owe me a cabin, Lady Destruction.

Piracy means pursuing a life of freedom, desire and danger.

I wonder, are you ready for what is coming your way?

You know my name

Second Letter

Lady Nemesis,

I have been pirating a lot longer than you, Captain Chaos. I know you disagree with everything I say as a matter of course. Before you rip up this letter with a wild laugh and glitter in your eyes, surprise me and read it. This piratical advice from an older and dashingly handsome sea dog may help you when you need it most.

Firstly, cultivate your notoriety. It is better to be feared than liked.

Secondly, as you and your ragtag crew (I can see the adorable scowl on your face as you read this line) of "ferocious Heartbreakers", are neither the strongest nor the biggest, you should fight dirty. Use any means necessary to come out the victor, especially when your pretty self is in trouble. You're smart. So, use it.

Thirdly, embrace your passion. I am sure you've been told to be pleasing to others and perfect in every way. That is your past. Now, lean in to your ambition, your ruthlessness and passion. Carve out your destiny in a way that delights you, not anyone else.

It would break my icy heart to end our delicious rivalry prematurely.

Piracy is dangerous. Take care of yourself.

Your notorious rival, Captain Charles Vane

Third Letter

Most Notorious Pirate Captain,

Congratulations, Lady Nemesis. If your goal was to drive me wild, you've achieved it. You haunt my dreams like a pirate haunts its target. You've robbed my rationality more brutally than any bloodthirsty raider. And the thrill of being with you is more thrilling than any legendary sea-battle. You really are an epic pirate Captain to have robbed me so thoroughly.

And the worst thing of all is, I love it.

You're the most frustrating, infuriating, baffling and wild woman I have ever had the terrible misfortune, and wonderful luck to meet. You challenge me in ways that drive me mad and excite me.

Don't think this means you've won, or that I'll go easy on you now.

I'm the world's most notorious pirate captain, and I always have a new trick up my sleeve.

Until our next date, I mean "pirate battle".

Your partner in crime, Captain Vane

Vane's Story[]

The following segments detail <companion name>'s story throughout The Perfect Storm. This section is nothing but spoilers. Read at your own risk.

Before the Story

Vane was born in England to a single mother, and a father who served the navy as a lieutenant. Prior to his conceiving, his mother had enjoyed a rather lavish life, being married to a highly respected member of the navy. However, following the confirmation of her pregnancy, his father stopped supporting her soon after, turning her life from riches to rags, and leaving her all alone to fend for herself and her unborn baby. As a result, since his birth, Vane inevitably became the subject of his mother's blame and resentment for the father's abandonment, and for the downward spiral her life became.

As soon as he turned old enough to enlist, Vane's mother immediately sent him to the navy in order to find his father. In order to gain the approval and recognition of both parents, he spent his entire childhood working in the navy, and finally obtained his golden opportunity after thirteen long years, when he was sent on a voyage that his father was a part of. However, when Vane finally had the chance to speak with the lieutenant about their familial relationship, the latter denied his claims, even going so far as to tell him that he would never be able to prove it.

Later, on that faithful stormy night, Vane - who was on mast duty - was pushed off the boat and into the middle of a hurricane by his very own father, which ironically confirmed their familial relationship, and his suspicions of his father wanting to erase his existence. To the rest of the world, he presumably perished in the fierce hurricane, but instead he miraculously survived the ordeal, and was washed ashore on a beach.

Alive against all odds, standing all alone, and finally free from the chains of his past that shackled him down, he resolved to continue living his life for the sake of himself instead of others. As he loved the sea, he decided to turn to piracy, and in the years that came after, he brutally fought his way to notoriety, eventually becoming the Caribbean's most wanted pirate in the golden age of piracy.

Trivia[]

Historical Trivia[]

  • Contrary to his game counterpart, not much is actually known of Vane's early life. He lived in Port Royal before becoming a pirate, but he was most likely not born there.
  • In the year 1718, Vane was captured but agreed to stop his criminal actions and declared his intention to accept the King's pardon; however just months later he and his men, including Jack Rackham, returned to piracy.
  • Later in November of the same year, Vane's attempt to plunder a frigate failed when it was revealed to be a heavily armed French warship. As they were being outgunned, Vane ordered for his ship to retreat, in which his own crew saw as an act of cowardice. This led to him being voted out of command in favour of Rackham, and was left with only a small sloop with a few loyal crew members.
  • In February 1719, Vane was caught in a storm in the Bay Islands and was marooned on an uncharted island. Upon being discovered by a passing British ship, he was arrested and brought back to Port Royal, where he was eventually tried and hanged in March 1721.

Game Trivia[]

  • Based on the left-sided placement of his sword, Vane is likely to be a right-handed sword user.
  • The pirate flag of Vane's boat, The Rangers, was designed by Vane himself.
    • Anchor represents the forces that trap enemies and pull them down. The monster symbolises that you need to fight them with all your might, even if it changes you.
  • According to the author, Vane was not designed with a beard in order to show off his "beautiful jawline".
