A nine-tailed fox, and one of the Supreme Four of the yokai realm. Carefree and muddle-headed, he always appears approachable as long as you don't cross a line. He went to a human city to look for his missing Origin Pearl, but doesn't seem too enthusiastic about his search.

Appearance[]

In his human form, Yuta is a tall, well-built man with a fair complexion. Unlike his brother Yuga, he keeps his mane in a silver-white color, with waist-length hair that frames his face as well, pointed ears on the top of his head, and a single white fluffy tail at the back. His face is covered in red markings, and he has yellow eyes, a trait that he shares with his brother. His eyes are described by Mangetsu to be always in the shape of crescents from smiling, as compared to Yuga's more rugged appearance. For jewelry, he wears two necklaces; the first made up of gold squares, and the second a foxfire pendant hanging from a red string decorated with white beads. Compared to Yuga's pendant, Yuta's foxfire necklace is more simplistic in design, consisting of only a single flame without any other decorations.

His outfit is made up of an even distribution of black and white decorated with gold-lined patterns and linings, with a short-sleeved open kimono top worn over a white hakama with foxfire patterns on its hem. Both of his sleeves are decorated with a yellow omamori tassel knot each. On his feet, he wears white socks, coupled with black geta shoes with red straps. Yuta also possesses a white kitsune mask decorated with red tassels and bells, with red markings similar to that on his face. Unlike Yuga who wears his kitsune mask most of the time, he hangs this mask on his waist instead. His outfit is held together with brown belts on his waist and shoulders, completed with an omamori tassel made out of a white and red tassel with two bells.

Today's desserts were great. There was one among them that stood out to me. It was covered in different flavored molasses, and was incredibly delicious. I can still recall that unique taste, even while writing this letter.

Of course, it wasn't the only one that was amazing. The fluffy, moist pastry and the soft yet tough confectionary that was covered in flour were great too. I was stunned while eating them, and they make me look forward to my next dessert.

I've written a lot, but here's what I really want to say. I want to try something smooth and flavorful tomorrow. Could you help me get it, Kitty?

I've lived in the human realm for a long time, but humans still amaze me, just like that translucent dessert you bought for me yesterday. It's as beautiful as the milky way.

I'm amazed at how humans can create such delicious desserts despite their short lives. This confirms my belief that humans and yokai each have things they are great at.

I try not to think of one as superior to the other. It's not because I find it a bother to compare humans and yokai. Instead, I just don't see the point of making the comparison. Come to think of it, I have something I would like to discuss with you, Kitty. How about giving up on our search for the Origin Pearl? We could look for interesting desserts instead.

Before the Story

Yuta is a nine-tailed fox yokai, and currently one of the Supreme Four of the yokai realm. Despite his carefree, laid-back demeanor, he is also the strongest fox demon in the Nine-Tailed Fox clan of his time, having inherited from his ancestors the Origin Pearl; an invaluable artifact that bestows immense power to its owner by fusing with the owner's life stream and being nurtured by their mana. Since the Origin Pearl was one of a kind, it is also highly coveted by every other yokai who sought for power.

A hundred years ago, Yuta was in a romantic relationship with a human named Mangetsu. However, during that period of time, humans and yokai were also at war with each other, which made their relationship especially dangerous. This eventually came to a head, when other yokai who desired the immense power of the Origin Pearl caught wind of Mangetsu's existence, and kidnapped her as a means of getting Yuta to give up the Origin Pearl. In order to protect Yuta, she chose to sacrifice herself instead, which caused him immeasurable grief. Since Mangetsu died an unnatural death, her soul was trapped for a hundred years before she could reincarnate. Thus, this prompted Yuta to start guarding the forest, the place where they had shared special moments together, day after day in solitude, waiting for her return ever since. It is possible that this incident also contributed to the formation of the Ancient Pact, an agreement that dictates that humans and yokai are forbidden to hurt each other without reason.

About ten years before the story, after a century of waiting, Yuta discovered that Mangetsu has successfully reincarnated as Ki, the childhood friend of Tenho and Fujihime. In order to prevent the same tragedy from happening again, Yuta kept a distance from her so as to not alert the yokai of her existence and use her once more. However, news of her reincarnation fell upon the ears of enemy yokai nevertheless, which led them to hypnotize her to break Orochi's seal, and in turn lure Yuta out of hiding. This incident thus caused the infamous flood that destroyed the city and resulted in countless deaths.

Amidst the chaos, Ki suffered a fatal injury, and having committed the sin of breaking Orochi's seal and causing the deaths of many, she would no longer be able to reincarnate upon death. To save her, Yuta used the Origin Pearl to fuse her life with a cat, turning her into the cat yokai Mangetsu and granting her the immortality of a yokai. However, since he had directly inherited the Origin Pearl, this act of sacrifice would cause him to slowly lose mana over the years, eventually coming at the cost of his life altogether. In order to conceal the truth of the Origin Pearl from Mangetsu, Yuta spun the false narrative that he and Mangetsu have been friends for at least a hundred years, and also casted a kotodama on his twin brother Yuga; a spell that prevents him from directly revealing the truth as long as Yuta still lives.

Yuta has remained by Mangetsu's side ever since, mostly to ensure that no harm would befall her again, but also likely due to the fact that he was now living on a finite lifespan and low mana with the loss of the Origin Pearl. Some time later, presumably due to the side effects of losing the pearl becoming much more apparent, Yuta lied to Mangetsu that he had simply lost the Origin Pearl. After receiving advice from the ancient tree yokai Fuso on its whereabouts, Mangetsu set out on a mission to search for it in the human realm. Despite knowing the truth about the pearl's location, Yuta would accompany Mangetsu on this endeavor nevertheless for the years to come, while trying to convince her to give up the search every now and then.

  • Like most yokai, Yuta is able to change his appearance at will, having been seen to change his fur to black like Yuga at one point.
    • As his twin brother, Yuga, mentioned that he was naturally born with black fur, it is possible that Yuta's fur may not be naturally white at birth.
